Injured AFD firefighter headed to special treatment center – KTUU.com

Posted: Published on July 6th, 2017

ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - Anchorage Fire Department firefighter-paramedic Ben Schultz, who was critically injured a month ago, will be flown Thursday to a hospital in Colorado that specializes in treating patients with spinal cord and brain injuries. In an email, Schultz's father, Jeff Schultz, says his son will be taken to Craig Hospital, near Denver, for treatment and rehabilitation. The hospital's website says the facility "provides a comprehensive system of inpatient and outpatient medical care, rehabilitation and long-term follow up services." Ben Schultz was injured on June 5, when he fell during a training exercise at AFD Station 5 in Spenard. He was found next to a fire engine that has a 100-foot tall ladder. Fellow firefighters have been at, or near, his bedside, since the accident. "We've been holding a vigil - if you will - or a stand-by at the hospital 24/7, to support the family," said Mike Stumbaugh, president of the Anchorage Firefighter's Union. "So they can go home and take a break, and know that Ben is being looked out for by his brothers and sisters." "We have been able to get sleep, because they have been here," wrote Jeff Schultz in an email to Channel 2 … Continue reading

Standardized Stem Cells – HuffPost

Posted: Published on July 6th, 2017

This past holiday, my son and I decided to build a computer. Nowadays this is not a daunting task. Its something even a biologist can accomplish. It started with a trip to the electronics store where we purchased the various components needed. The pieces are designed to work together and after a few hours, we had a functioning computer. This demonstrates the power of standardized components which allow you to build something complex, functional and sophisticated. If only repairing tissues and growing human organs were this simple. Scientists have been experimenting with stem cells for many years and there have been some amazing advances. One of the major limitations is the lack of standardization in procedures for producing and manipulating stem cells. This can make it difficult to get the same results in different laboratories. Recent advances through the National Institutes of Health (NIH) are helping to resolve this issue. Researchers have been producing stem cells in individual laboratories for many years. Through an initiative with the Common Funds Regenerative Medicine program, the NIH is now providing standardized stem cells directly for academic or commercial research or production. This standardization represents a huge step forward and will undoubtedly lead to … Continue reading

The "Grey's Anatomy" star filed docs saying he went above and beyond to informally handle custody issues withAryn Drake-Lee. Jesse filed for divorce back in April and we were told things were civil. But Jesse says it's now turned into a legal war. In docs obtained by TMZ, Jesse's asking to get more time with 3-year-old Sadie and 2-year-old Maceo, claiming Aryn only lets him see them shy of 3 hours a day and she refuses to allow sleepovers. Jesse says he rented a home less than 3 miles from Aryn's home so he could be close to the kids. To prove he's a hands-on dad, Jesse listed their nicknames and their favorite food -- mac & cheese for "Sadie Munchkin" and "anything we put in front of 'Mace.'" Still ... Jesse says Aryn's made things impossible so he's asking the judge to step in and issue a formal custody agreement. Anatomy of a Goal: How Nicolas Lodeiro's attacking impetus, off-the-ball run set up Clint Dempsey's opener vs. Rapids – SoundersFC.com

Posted: Published on July 6th, 2017

The Seattle Sounders secured their second road win of the season on Tuesday with a convincing 3-1 victory over the Colorado Rapids. Clint Dempsey recorded a brace and gave the Sounders the lead just six minutes into the match with a neat left-footed finish from 12 yards out. It only took 17 seconds to go from the hands of Stefan Frei to the back of Tim Howards net in a clinical counterattack. Dempsey will rightfully get the credit, as will Joevin Jones, who tallied his sixth assist of the season, but Nicolas Lodeiro catalyzed the entire sequence with his impetus in attack and finished it with his off-the-ball movement in front of goal. After Marlon Hairston crossed in a ball from the left side of the field that Frei snagged, Frei unleashed a long outlet pass. Lodeiro received it in traffic, and after playing through an advantage call on a foul, he nutmegged Bismark Boateng and immediately turned up field. Lodeiro picked out left winger Jones, who was already sprinting into acres of space. Rather than sit back while Jones attacked, Lodeiro made a half-field run in support. When Jones was roughly 30 yards from goal, there were four defenders … Continue reading

Anatomy Of A Love Triangle: Jealous Teen Strangles And Dismembers Classmate – Oxygen (blog)

January 21, 2005: Police in East Moline, Illinois, got a call from a man named Tony Reynolds. His daughter Adrianne was missing. According to Adriannes father, the 16-year-old hadnt come home after school that afternoon, or shown up for her after-school job at a local fast-food restaurant. He told Snapped on Oxygen: I knew immediately something was wrong, because she didnt go to work. She loved going to work. Shed get ready an hour before she was supposed to be there. Her boss said she would never miss work. She was a dependable kid. Adrianne Reynolds had recently moved up to Illinois from Texas, just a couple months earlier. Her classmates, Cory Gregory and Sarah Kolb, were the last ones to be seen with her. Like Adrienne, Sarah Kolb knew what it was like to be the new kid in town. She was born into a military family that traveled all over the world. Sarah was trying to find her identity, and she found solace in the horror-themed hip-hop group called the Insane Clown Posse. She and Cory met and become friends a year earlier, after meeting at a local mall and sharing a joint. They were inseparable. It was … Continue reading

Anatomy of a Goal: Villalba's Dagger – Massive Report

Posted: Published on July 6th, 2017

Welcome to the Anatomy of a Goal, where each week we dissect one goal (or near goal) from the previous weeks Columbus Crew SC match. For match 19 of the 2017 MLS Season, we take a look at Hector Villalbas 64th minute goal that put Atlanta United up 2-0 as part of their win over Crew SC on Saturday. Here is a look at the finish from the Atlanta winger. Though Columbus dominated possession for much of the first half, the team never really threatened Atlanta. Usually possession oriented, the Five Stripes were happy to lose the possession battle with the Black and Gold, instead focusing on long balls into open spaces. Just like Nathaniel Marhefka predicted in his lineup preview, Atlanta exploited the space vacated by Crew SCs attack-minded right winger and right fullback. Villalbas second goal is a direct result of the Five Stripes getting into the vacant space on the Columbus defensive right. As usual, Nate absolutely nailed his focal area when he said to expect a tug-of-war between [Harrison] Afful and [Ethan] Finlay for Crew SC & [Yamil] Asad and [Greg] Garza for Atlanta United. Atlantas second goal begins with their No. 10, Miguel Almiron, receiving … Continue reading

Neanderthal DNA suggests yet another wave of human migration out of Africa – Ars Technica

Posted: Published on July 6th, 2017

Enlarge / The entrance to the cave where the Neanderthal thigh bone was found in 1937. Modern humans and Neanderthals have a confusing genetic relationship. One set of data suggests our two species diverged around 650,000 years agobut other clues point to an ongoing close (that is, sexual) relationship between our ancestors that persisteduntil around 300,000 years ago. This is made all the more muddled by the fact that Neanderthals look like they were living in Eurasia 300,000 years ago whileour own ancestors were still in Africa. And then the two groups clearly intermingled once humans did leave Africa. One way to account for all this contradictory information is to suggest that another group of humans left Africa sometime between the Neanderthals' departure and our own. An analysis of Neanderthal DNA, published this week in Nature Communications, adds new weight to this hypothesis. When people talk about DNA, most often theyre talking about nuclear DNA. Thats the DNA that combines genetic material from a mother and a father and sits in the nucleus of each cell. But the mitochondrialittle energy-producing blobsthat sit inside cellshave their own DNA, which comes exclusively from the mother. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is a fantastically useful … Continue reading

A French Choreographer Who Plays With the DNA of Dance – New York Times

Posted: Published on July 6th, 2017

Mr. Charmatz said the idea for 10000 Gestures came to him while watching one of his own pieces, Leve des Conflits Extended, at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2013. The idea of Leve was that it was based on limited gestures, so you were constantly circling through the sequence, like a living sculpture changing shape, he said. I thought, what if you flip that, and have a piece where none of the dancers ever repeat a gesture or do the same one as anyone else? How do you create 10,000 completely different gestures? Over many, many hours working in a group on various themes, Mr. Charmatz explained. The themes included: doing nothing, microscopic movements (raising an eyebrow, flicking fingers), violence, eroticism, dance history, obscenity, and politics a Brexit means Brexit gesture made by Theresa May is even in there. Each person has a different idea about what an erotic or a violent gesture might be, Mr. Charmatz said, so you get 25 variations on these ideas all happening together. All the themes come in a specific order and last for a predetermined amount of time, he explained, although the number of dancers onstage and the groupings … Continue reading
