Stem cell-based therapies to treat spinal cord injury: a review – Dove Medical Press

Posted: Published on July 4th, 2017

Zhongju Shi,1,2 Hongyun Huang,3 Shiqing Feng1,2 1Department of Orthopaedics, Tianjin Medical University General Hospital, 2Institute of Neurology, Key Laboratory of Post-Neuroinjury Neuro-Repair and Regeneration in Central Nervous System, Ministry of Education, Tianjin City, Tianjin, 3Institute of Neurorestoratology, General Hospital of Armed Police Forces, Beijing, Peoples Republic of China Abstract: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating condition and major burden on society and individuals. Currently, neurorestorative strategies, including stem cell therapy products or mature/functionally differentiated cell-derived cell therapy products, can restore patients with chronic complete SCI to some degree of neurological functions. The stem cells for neurorestoration include neural stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells, embryonic stem cells, induced pluripotent stem cells, etc. A better understanding of the merits, demerits and precise function of different stem cells in the treatment of SCI may aid in the development of neurorestorative strategies. However, the efficacy, safety and ethical concerns of stem cell-based therapy continue to be challenged. Nonetheless, stem cell-based therapies hold promise of widespread applications, particularly in areas of SCI, and have the potential to be novel therapeutics, which contributes to the repair of SCI. This review mainly focused on recent advances regarding the stem cell-based therapies in the treatment of SCI … Continue reading

Brain Stimulation Reduces Spasticity after Spinal Cord Injury … – HospiMedica (registration)

Posted: Published on July 4th, 2017

Image: A new study shows magnetic stimulation to the brain can reduce post-surgical spasticity (Photo courtesy of iStockPhoto). Researchers at Paracelsus Medical University (Salzburg, Austria), the University of Verona (Italy), and other institutions conducted a study to investigate if iTBS, a safe, non-invasive and well-tolerated protocol of excitatory repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), is effective in modulating spasticity. The study included ten subjects with incomplete cervical or thoracic SCI. Five patients received 10 days of real or iTBS, and the remaining five received sham treatment. After two months, the sham group was switched to real iTBS and the study continued. The researchers measured motor-evoked potentials (MEP) in the soleus (calf muscle), during magnetic stimulation over the most responsive area of the scalp. M-wave and H reflexes, which are measures of muscle contractions due to stimulation of the tibial nerve, were assessed for each subject, and an H/M amplitude ratio was determined. Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS) and the Spinal Cord Injury Assessment Tool for Spasticity (SCAT) were also compared before and after the stimulation protocols. The results showed that patients receiving real iTBS showed significant increased resting and active MEPs amplitude and a significant reduction of the H/M amplitude ratio. In … Continue reading

CDT July 03, 2017 Victor Lindenberg Lewis participated in a study on Traumatic Brain Injury. Credit: KING SEATTLE - A first of its kind study published in JAMA Neurology is shining light on the complexity of war time brain injuries and why treating service members will require much more than a one size fits all band aid. A University of Washington neurologist followed 50 soldiers starting just after they suffered a concussive blast injury and tracked their conditions through brain imaging and other techniques over several years. Dr. Christine Mac Donald, associate professor of neurological surgery at the University of Washington School of Medicine, said her findingsbring into question medical beliefs that individuals with TBI will stabilize within a year after their injury. Instead, Mac Donald found these service members' mental health symptoms evolved and even worsened five years later. "The takeaway for me that was so striking was the substantial number of service members who significantly declined in this population that was supposed to be the … Continue reading

Myths in Emergency Medicine: Don’t Break Up with Ketamine for TBI Yet – LWW Journals

Dr. Spiegel is a clinical instructor in emergency medicine at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Visit his blog at http://emnerd.com, follow him on Twitter @emnerd_, and read his past articles at http://bit.ly/EMN-MythsinEM. No one will deny that emergency medicine is currently experiencing a protracted love affair with the arylcyclohexylamine known as ketamine. It is used for procedural sedation, to manage acute pain, and as an induction agent in patients undergoing emergent intubation. It is a common participant in some of the most popular pharmacological mashups in the emergency department like rocketamine or ketofol. Ketamine possesses a number of properties that make it an ideal agent for patients who typically undergo intubation in the emergency department, but it has been traditionally avoided in patients with intracranial pathology due to the fear of increasing intracranial pressure (ICP). Ketamine's effects on ICP were first noted in articles published in 1972 describing its potentially detrimental influences in patients undergoing anesthesia for neurodiagnostic procedures. (Br J Anaesth 1972;44[12]:1298; Br J Anaesth 1972;44[11]:1200.) This series of articles described a small cohort of patients with anatomical obstruction to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) who experienced a marked increase in their CSF after ketamine was administered. In typical dogmatic … Continue reading

Link Between Parkinson’s And Alzheimer’s Diseases May Lead To … – Medical Daily

A similarity betweentwo distinct neurodegenerative diseases, Parkinsonsand Alzheimers, maylead to a potential new drug treatment for Parkinson's.On a biochemical level, thediseases develop when sticky proteins form clumps in brain cells, researchers from Emory Health Sciences said. They found that the same enzyme also spurred the process in both diseases. In a new studypublished online in Nature Structural and Molecular Biology, Emory researchers explain how they used this similarity between Parkinsons and AD to develop a drug that stops tau proteins from becoming sticky and therefore prevents them from clumping together. Although still in its research phase, this would theoretically prevent the onset of AD,as a similar version of it has prevented Alzheimers disease in animal studies. The next step is to test on animals theParkinsons version of a drug to inhibit the enzymeto see if these positive results can be repeated. Read: Parkinsons Disease Treatment Reverses Symptoms In Mice, Increases Dopamine Receptors "In Parkinson's, alpha-synuclein behaves much like Tau in Alzheimer's," said study lead research Keqiang Ye, in a statement. "We reasoned that if [the enzyme] AEP cuts Tau, it's very likely that it will cut alpha-synuclein too." The discovery, though promising, is likely not the ultimate cure for Parkinson's, as … Continue reading

Students examine anatomy at camp – Rocky Mount Telegram

Posted: Published on July 3rd, 2017

Several students traveled from far and wide to explore the human body at N.C. Wesleyan Colleges first offering of the Human Body and Disease Camp. While the camp may be too intense for everyone, the students who attended the camp seemed fascinated with the opportunity to dissect rats, sheep brains and pig hearts. Dr. Dan Stovall, who served as the instructor for the camp, said the students also went to the planetarium at the Imperial Centre to learn more about how space affects human physiology. While the camp was offered on the campus of N.C. Wesleyan College in Rocky Mount, most of the students came from places outside the Twin Counties. Rising high school senior Austin Strickland, who lives in Goldsboro, said he came to the camp because he wants to be a surgeon, and this camp offered something new. I have never seen a camp like this before, Strickland said. The price of the camp was a $415, a figure that seems pricey compared to many other summer day camps in the area. However, considering the camp earned students a college credit, the price may be considered a bargain. Stovall teaches a number of classes related to the human … Continue reading
