Parents, stakeholders tell Kaine they’re concerned about potential Virginia Medicaid cuts – Richmond.com

Posted: Published on June 24th, 2017

U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., met with stakeholders in Richmond on Friday for a roundtable discussion on the potential effect of Medicaid cuts in Senate Republicans health care proposal. Kaine met with about 25 interested parties, including representatives of ARC of Virginia, the Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services, AARP Virginia, Voices for Virginias Children, the Virginia Association of Nurses, Planned Parenthood and the NAACP. The heart of this bill is dramatic cuts to Medicaid, Kaine said at the SunTrust Center on East Main Street. Kaine said he wants GOP senators to slow the bills progress and hold hearings. Kaine spent much of the hour listening to stories from Virginians who said that without Medicaid assistance they would not have the means to care for children who are seriously ill, or who deal with mental health problems or developmental disabilities. You cannot balance the health care act on the back of the most vulnerable citizens, said Kim Goodloe, president of ARC of Virginia. People with developmental disabilities who want to live with family members, or live independently, are at risk of losing services that are vital to keeping them out of nursing homes or state institutions, she said. Our biggest … Continue reading

$10.7M Los Angeles Traumatic Brain Injury Jury Verdict – The National Law Review

Posted: Published on June 24th, 2017

People who are injured in accidents and who are already are injured may be able to recover damages for the aggravation of their preexisting conditions or injuries. In M.C. v. Victor Matthews, Los Angeles Superior Court case number BC557692, the jury returned a substantial verdict to a child with a learning disability who suffered a traumatic brain injury in an automobile accident, illustrating how California courts treat cases in which a preexisting condition is worsened by injuries in accidents. The plaintiff was a 10-year-old girl who was riding as a passenger in a vehicle that was struck by the defendant. The girl was sitting in the backseat behind the driver when the car in which she was riding was rear-ended. She suffered fractures and claimed that she also received a traumatic brain injury. The girl had an IEP for a learning disability for a visual processing disorder prior to the accident. She was rated as a four on the scale for severe traumatic brain injury immediately following the accident and as a 12 on the scale for moderate traumatic brain injury at the hospital. She spent 11 days in the pediatric intensive care unit because of the accident. She argued … Continue reading

New brain network model could explain differences in brain injuries – ETHealthworld.com

Posted: Published on June 24th, 2017

To understand the effect of injury, we must look not just for localized changes but network-wide changes caused by the disruption of network connections. Considering the brains network of activity, rather than just individual regions, could help us understand why some brain injuries are much worse than others, according to a study published PLOS Computational Biology by Maxwell B. Wang, Julia Owen, and Pratik Mukherjee from University of California, San Francisco, and Ashish Raj from Weill Cornell Medicine. The human brain displays an astonishing range of responses to injury, depending on its location. This is conventionally considered a result of the fact that each brain region has a specific functional role. However, there is increasing evidence that the brains regions do not operate in isolation but as a network or connectome. Therefore, to understand the effect of injury, we must look not just for localized changes but network-wide changes caused by the disruption of network connections. The authors used a combination of Diffusion-Tensor MRI and ideas from graph theory to investigate patterns in the white matter network architecture of the brain, and how these change due to injury. They built on previous work by Dr. Raj, in the Feil Family … Continue reading

Women losing out over hormone therapy fears, some experts say … – CBC.ca

Posted: Published on June 24th, 2017

The risk of heart attack, stroke or breast cancer due to hormone replacement therapy has been overstated, and that has scared away some women who could benefit from it, the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada said at its annual conference in Ottawa this week. The SOGCsays HRT is not the scourge it was once considered to be. "I do think that a generation of women were denied the opportunity to have better health," said Dr. Robert Langer, who spoke at the conference. For decades, HRT was the go-to treatment for women experiencing symptoms of menopause that can include night sweats, insomnia, depression, anxiety and hot flashes, and was even thought to have a protective effect against bone density loss and heart disease. In 2002, however, the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) prematurely ended a massive study involving thousands of women when it was discovered HRT failed to protect against heart disease andincreased the risk of heart disease as well as blood clots, stroke and breast cancer. Shirley Weir, founder of the Menopause Chicks website, says most women dont have anyone to talk to about menopause (Shirley Weir/menopausechicks.com) That finding "seemingly turned the world upside down," said Langer, medical … Continue reading

Preventing Dementia: Getting Closer to Recommendations – Alzforum

Posted: Published on June 24th, 2017

23 Jun 2017 Of all the diseases that afflict people in old age, people fear Alzheimers most. How can they protect themselves? A report from the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) acknowledges some possible steps, but stops short of issuing concrete recommendations. They base their report on a thorough review of the literature that finds modest but inconclusive evidence that cognitive training, blood pressure management, and regular physical activity prevent or delay cognitive decline. However, the data are still too weak to issue specific guidelines to the general public, wrote the committee of senior scientists led by Alan Leshner, CEO emeritus of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and Story Landis, director emeritus of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders andStroke. The evidence has not yet matured to the level that would support an assertive public health campaign, the authors wrote. However, the report does identify those interventions, supported by some evidence of benefit, that should be discussed with [people] who are actively seeking advice on steps they can take to maintain brain health as theyage. Its a very balanced report that truly reflects the level of evidence currently available, said Edo Richard, Radboud University, … Continue reading

HRC releases video highlighting importance of Planned Parenthood for LGBTQ community – Metro Weekly

Posted: Published on June 24th, 2017

Brooke Baxa Photo: Human Rights Campaign, via YouTube. The Human Rights Campaign has released a video highlighting the important role that Planned Parenthood plays in providing culturally competent health care to the LGBTQ community. The video, which was launched Friday, is in response to a provision in the Senate version of a Republican-led health care reform effort that would prohibit Planned Parenthood from receiving Medicaid dollars. Because Senate Republicans plan on using reconciliation to pass the bill, the defunding of Planned Parenthood would only last one fiscal year, as opposed to a permanent ban. But the damage likely forcing several Planned Parenthood clinics to close would be done by the time the prohibition expired. Brooke Baxa, a 22-year old non-binary transgender healthcare advocate, is featured in the video explaining how they were able to get medical treatment through Planned Parenthoods clinic in Denver, Colo. Baxa says they first met other transgender people living authentically through a Planned Parenthood youth conference, which aided them in coming out as transgender and non-binary. In the fall of 2015, after seeking medical care from Planned Parenthood, Baxa began taking hormones, including testosterone, to help with their transition. Baxa also discovered that Planned Parenthood was … Continue reading

Stem cells: the future of medicine – Medical Xpress

Posted: Published on June 24th, 2017

June 23, 2017 Imagine being able to take cells from your skin, transform them into other types of cells, such as lung, brain, heart or muscle cells, and use those to cure your ailments, from diabetes to heart disease or macular degeneration. To realise this, however, challenges still remain, Professor Janet Rossant, a pioneer in the field, says. All across the world, scientists have begun clinical trials to try and do just that, by making use of the incredible power and versatility of stem cells, which are special cells that can make endless copies of themselves and transform into every other type of cell. While human embryos contain embryonic stem cells, which help them to develop, the use of those cells has been controversial. The scientists are using induced pluripotent stem cells instead, which are other cells that have been reprogrammed to behave like stem cells. "There are still significant challenges that we need to overcome, but in the long run we might even be able to create organs from stem cells taken from patients. That would enable rejection-free transplants," said Professor Janet Rossant, a pioneer in the field. The mouse that changed everything A speaker at the recent Commonwealth … Continue reading

Clear View on Stem Cell Development – Technology Networks

Posted: Published on June 24th, 2017

Today, tracking the development of individual cells and spotting the associated factors under the microscope is nothing unusual. However, impairments like shadows or changes in the background complicate the interpretation of data. Now, researchers at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and the Helmholtz Zentrum Mnchen have developed a software that corrects images to make hidden development steps visible. When stem cells develop into specialized cells, this happens in multiple steps. But which regulatory proteins are active during the decisive branching on the development path? Using so-called time-lapse microscopy, researchers can observe individual cells at very high time resolutions and, using fluorescent labelling, they can recognize precisely which of these proteins appear when in the cell. Once a stem cell has been identified, it can be closely observed over several days using cell-tracking software. Yet, this surveillance work often turns out to be difficult. The imaging data is frequently marred by irregular brightness and faded backgrounds in the time-lapse, explains Dr. Carsten Marr, heading the workgroup Quantitative Single Cell Dynamics at the Institute of Computational Biology (ICB) of the Helmholtz Zentrum Mnchen. This makes it difficult or impossible to detect proteins that are decisive when a cell opts for a … Continue reading
