Generous donation: 16-year-old offers her hair to fellow cancer fighters – VVdailypress.com

Posted: Published on June 19th, 2017

Rene Ray De La Cruz Staff Writer @DP_ReneDeLaCruz VICTORVILLE A young cancer fighter recently braved the salon chair as she had a portion of her long, dark-blond hair cut for chemo patients. Sitting inside Bella Mia salon in Hesperia on Tuesday, 16-year-old Paije Grissom held up her freshly-cut braided ponytail as she laughed and exclaimed, I didnt know I had that much hair. Diagnosed six years ago with a rare form of malignant chordoma cancer, Grissom is a smiling, outgoing teenager from Victorville who told the Daily Press she wants to donate her long, luscious hair while she still can. Ive been through a lot of cancer treatments, but I still have my hair, Grissom said. I figured Id donate my hair to someone who lost their hair to chemo or radiation. Grissom, whose life has been filled with radiation treatments, surgeries and chronic infections, has suffered partial hearing loss in her right ear, is starting to lose sight in both her eyes and deals with chronic fatigue and several other ailments, which prevents her from attending classes at Victor Valley High School. Grissom, who lives with her grandmother, Monette Holmes, said her best friend, Nadia Castillo, 12, has been … Continue reading

‘Sing Out Louise!’ What Makes Amanda Keller an LGBT Hero in Alabama – Daily Beast

Posted: Published on June 19th, 2017

For Amanda Keller, her service as the director of the Magic City Acceptance Center for LGBTQ youth in Birmingham, Alabama, embodies the sincerest tribute to her late father. The 32-year-old first began working with the Birmingham Aids Outreach (BAO) organization, which founded the Center, on World AIDS Day in December 2009. She had wanted to become involved with local HIV/AIDS advocacy following her father Roberts death from AIDS-related illness in November 2003, in her native Cleveland, Ohio. I wanted to educate myself and others, and this was the best way that I knew [so that] I could remain connected to him and give back to the community, she says. The presence of Keller and activists like her is vital in Alabama, a state better known for homophobic bogeymen like former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore, who fought tooth and nail against a judicial decision striking down Alabamas ban against same-sex marriage in February 2015, and then later fought local compliance with the Supreme Court decision in June of that year that brought marriage equality across the country. Alabama is also the home state of Senator Jeff Sessions, now the attorney general, whose record on standing against anti-LGBTQ equality is long. … Continue reading

Israeli Scientists: Stem Cell Therapy Not Good for All Heart Patients – The Jewish Press – JewishPress.com

Posted: Published on June 19th, 2017

Photo Credit: Nati Shohat / Flash 90 Patients with severe and end-stage heart failure have few treatment options available to them apart from transplants and miraculous stem cell therapy. But a new Tel Aviv University study has found that stem cell therapy may in fact harm patients with heart disease. The research, led by Prof. Jonathan Leor of TAUs Sackler Faculty of Medicine and Sheba Medical Center and conducted by TAUs Dr. Nili Naftali-Shani, explores the current practice of using cells from the host patient to repair tissue and contends that this can prove deleterious or toxic for patients. The study was recently published in the journal Circulation. We found that, contrary to popular belief, tissue stem cells derived from sick hearts do not contribute to heart healing after injury, said Prof. Leor. Furthermore, we found that these cells are affected by the inflammatory environment and develop inflammatory properties. The affected stem cells may even exacerbate damage to the already diseased heart muscle. Tissue or adult stem cells blank cells that can act as a repair kit for the body by replacing damaged tissue encourage the regeneration of blood vessel cells and new heart muscle tissue. Faced with a worse … Continue reading

The Maths of Life and Death: Our Secret Weapon in the Fight … – Scientific American

Posted: Published on June 18th, 2017

The following essay is reprinted with permission from The Conversation, an online publication covering the latest research. Maths is the language of science. It crops up everywhere from physics to engineering and chemistry aiding us in understanding the origins of the universe and building bridges that wont collapse in the wind. Perhaps a little more surprisingly, maths is also increasingly integral to biology. For hundreds of years mathematics has been used, to great effect, to model relatively simple physical systems. Newtons universal law of gravitation is a fine example. Relatively simple observations led to a rule which, with great accuracy, describes the motion of celestial bodies billions of miles away. Traditionally, biology has been viewed as too complicated to submit to such mathematical treatment. Biological systems are often classified as complex. Complexity in this sense means that, due to the complicated interaction of many sub-components, biological systems can exhibit what we call emergent behaviour the system as a whole demonstrates properties which the individual components acting alone cannot. This biocomplexity has often been mistaken for vitalism, the misconception that biological processes are dependent on a force or principle distinct from the laws of physics and chemistry. Consequently, it has been … Continue reading

Anatomy of a Suicide review unhappy days are here again – The Guardian

Posted: Published on June 18th, 2017

Brilliant: Hattie Morahan in Anatomy of a Suicide. Photograph: Tristram Kenton for the Observer When sadness runs through a family, is it inherited? Alice Birchs skewering Anatomy of a Suicide suggests something more complicated. A sort of hypnotism. A transfixing of one generation by another. A daughter who finds her mothers life compelling may vacate her own existence. Three generations of women enact their histories from the 1970s to the 2040s side by side. They are so closely woven together that it is hard to know where one begins and the other ends. Does the suicide of her mother cause the breakdown of a woman when she gives birth? Does that womans drug habit steer her daughter towards becoming a doctor and sterilisation? Words home is one that recurs and gestures echo between them. When a woman speaks of wrists, her mother (who has tried to slit hers) sends her hand pirouetting gracefully in the air. Birchs dialogue is as unswerving as it is in her Lady Macbeth screenplay, but more intricate. The influence of Caryl Churchill is apparent in ellipses and overlaps. But there is individual sharpness. Hurrah for this response to a woman who says she is sorry … Continue reading

Anatomy of an assault – Daily Inter Lake

Gianforte proved himself unworthy Montana, I am disappointed that we have just elected another rich man to represent us in Congress. Greg Gianforte proved himself unworthy of our trust the day before the election, yet actions do not appear to matter much anymore. In his victory speech, he said Congress should not get paid until the budget is balanced, he will vote for term limits, and is standing with President Trump to make America great again. To take him at his word then, he will stand with conservative Republicans on health-care legislation that Congress has already exempted themselves from (why would they do that if it is good for us and how is it even allowed under our Constitution?); pass laws that seek to control women and limit their rights; oppress minorities; and disregard science, which will further diminish the health of our planet. Why are we electing people that want to take away what little liberal safety nets exist for the poor, sick and elderly? Dont believe the claims that these efforts are being passed for our national security and economic well-being. How secure is a nation if its own people arent fed, healthy, and have equal access to … Continue reading

The anatomy of Caliphate colonialism (5) – Vanguard

Posted: Published on June 18th, 2017

By Douglas Anele But despite their remarkable capacity for creative ingenuity and accomplishments, the Igbo as a group, according to Prof. Chinua Achebe, have the deadly flaws of hubris, overweening pride, obsession with material success and irritatingly noisy exhibitionism or showiness which tend toinvite envy from members of other ethnic groups. Yet, those flaws do not justify their being massacred periodically by northerners or treated as second class citizens in their own country. The May riots of 1966, Ironsis gruesome murder and massacre of Ndigbo afterwards led to a radical rethinking of their attitude to the idea of a unified Nigerian nation. The Igbo began to realise that their belief in a strong central authority that provides a level playing field which enables Nigerians from every ethnic group to actualise the ideal of one nation, one citizenship, and one destiny was a delusion. The belated Igbo questioning of One Nigeria was consistent with the memorandum submitted by the northern delegation to the Nigerian ad hoc constitutional conference of September 1966. In it, northern representatives claimed that We have pretended for too long that there are no differences between the peoples of this country. The hard fact which we must honestly … Continue reading
