Posted: Published on June 17th, 2017

by BARBARA MORSE SILVA, NBC 10 NEWS A new breakthrough drug called Ocrevus is being used to treat multiple sclerosis. A new breakthrough drug called Ocrevus is being used to treat multiple sclerosis. "I started noticing things were getting blurry," said 47-year-old Preston Corbin, who went to see his eye doctor. "He saw something that wasn't right and sent me to Rhode Island Hospital." It was at Rhode Island Hospital, just one month shy of his 40th birthday, that Corbin was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. "His type of MS is what we call relapsing and remitting," said Dr. Syed Rizvi, a neurologist and director of the M.S. Center at Rhode Island Hospital. Relapsing and remitting means his symptoms would come and go. Then he started progressing. "It has worsened, said Corbin. I mean, I'm not in a wheelchair so that's good, but I definitely notice. I don't run anymore." But then a few months ago, in March, Ocrevus was FDA-approved. "It looks extremely promising. It is an infusion or a cycle of infusions two weeks a part, every six months," said Rizvi. Corbin was the first in Rhode Island to be infused with this antibody that targets a cell that … Continue reading

Brain cell transplants to treat Parkinson’s disease may return after 14 … – Genetic Literacy Project

Posted: Published on June 16th, 2017

Researchers are working to revive a radical treatment for Parkinsons disease. The treatment involves transplanting healthy brain cells to replace cells killed off by the disease. Its an approach that was tried decades ago and then set aside after disappointing results. During the 1980s and 1990s, researchers used cells taken directly from the brains of aborted fetuses to treat hundreds of Parkinsons patientsFor some patients, the transplanted fetal cells produced dramatic improvements. But rigorous studies eventually showed that many other patients were not helped. And some developed an unwelcome side effect: uncontrolled movements. So in 2003, researchers declared a moratorium on transplants for Parkinsons. To prevent that sort of problem, scientistshave spent the past dozen years figuring out how to turn stem cells into pure lines of dopamine cells in the lab. Unlike the transplanted fetal cells, these cells are an exact replacement for the neurons that produce dopamine in an adult brain, So you are confident that everything you are putting in the patients brain will consist of right type of cell, says Viviane Tabar, a neurosurgeon and stem cell biologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. The GLP aggregated and excerpted this blog/article to reflect … Continue reading

Otto Warmbier has extensive brain damage, doctor says – Fox News

Posted: Published on June 16th, 2017

CINCINNATI An American college student imprisoned by North Korea has extensive brain damage and is unresponsive to his surroundings, the doctors treating him said Thursday. A medical team from the University of Cincinnati Medical Center described Otto Warmbier's condition as a "state of unresponsive wakefulness" and did not say -- at the request of his family -- whether the 22-year-old will recover. "He has spontaneous eye opening and blinking," Dr. Daniel Kanter, director of the hospital's neurocritical care program, told reporters Thursday. "However, he shows no signs of understanding language, responding to verbal commands or awareness to his surroundings." "He has not spoken," Kanter said. "He has not engaged in purposeful movements or behaviors." Warmbier arrives at the airport in his hometown of Cincinnati after 17 months in a North Korean prison. (Associated Press) Warmbier was medically evacuated from North Korea on Tuesday, following a flurry of diplomatic activity at the highest levels of U.S. government. Warmbier, a University of Virginia student, was serving a 15-year sentence for allegedly trying to steal a banner containing a political slogan that was hanging from a wall in his Pyongyang hotel. The North Koreans told U.S. officials that Warmbier suffered from botulism and … Continue reading

Banks targets embryonic stem cell research funding | Indiana | The … – Fort Wayne Journal Gazette

Posted: Published on June 16th, 2017

Rep. Jim Banks, R-3rd, introduced legislation Thursday that would prevent the use of federal funds for stem cell research involving human embryos. Banks' bill would direct the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to give priority to medical research with the greatest potential for near-term clinical benefit in human patients and that does not use stem cells from destroyed, discarded or created embryos. Scientists say embryonic stem cells show potential for transforming into other cells that might repair tissue damaged by disease or injury. Human embryonic stem cells used in research come from donated, unused fertilized eggs developed for in vitro fertilization procedures. Adult blood stem cells are used to treat leukemia, and adult neural stem cells have been tested for brain disorders and spinal cord injuries. This bipartisan bill prioritizes stem cell research that has a real impact on patients suffering right now while ensuring that research is conducted ethically without destroying human embryos, Banks, a freshman lawmaker from Columbia City, said in a statement. Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Ill., co-sponsored Banks' bill, which is called the Patients First Act of 2017. The Dickey-Wicker Amendment of 1996 prohibited HHS from funding research using created or destroyed human embryos. But … Continue reading

Republican Congressman Jim Banks (IN-03) today joined with Democratic Congressman Dan Lipinski (IL-03) to introduce a bipartisan bill to direct the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to prioritize life-affirming stem cell research with near-term benefits for human patients and to refrain from creating or destroying human embryos in the process. This bipartisan bill prioritizes stem cell research that has a real impact on patients suffering right now while ensuring that research is conducted ethically with destroying human embryos, said Banks. HHS and NIH both perform important life-saving research and promoting research that protects life has support on both sides of the aisle. If enacted, the Banks legislation would direct HHS to prioritize stem cell research that has the greatest potential for near-term benefit in human patients. The bill also prohibits such research from creating or destroying human embryonic stem cells in the process. Follow LifeNews.com on Instagram for pro-life pictures.
