Reader’s view: Stem cell treatments can make a difference – Midland Daily News

Posted: Published on June 6th, 2017

To the editor: What price would you pay for the wellbeing of the people around you? We have to ask ourselves this question when looking at stem cells. My name is Raul Moreira. Im a senior at Midland High. I want to bring you some more information on stem cells. Stem cells are a type of unspecialized cell that have the potential to become any type of specialized cell. In this letter, I want to teach you more about stem cells and the benefits and challenges we are faced with when dealing with a possibly life-saving medicine and research. Now you may be thinking this is all good on paper but what are the real-world stories and benefits to stem cell research? One of the best candidates to answer this question is Kris Boesen. Kris became paralyzed from the neck down after his car fishtailed on a wet road and crash into a telephone pole. Luckily Kris qualified for a clinical study that might help. Just three months after Kris was injected with stem cells he is now able to feed himself, write his name and hug his friends and family among many other tasks he could not do before … Continue reading

Posted: Published on June 6th, 2017

There is an increasing focus on science being linked to providing practical solutions to agricultural problems. There is also increasing awareness of technology, although the channels used for information and creating change in the way information is passed and understood by the receiver are poorly developed. Biotechnology is no longer a new technology in Africa; some countries in Africa have adopted the technology, while some other countries are currently conducting confined field trial for the technology. In Nigeria, Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) which is a component of biotechnology is currently undergoing confined field trial in various locations. It is expected that in the next three years, the commercialisation of the BT cotton will commence in the country. Africa as a continent in the recent past have suffered a high level of food insecurity following the actions and inaction of various governments to put sustainable policies to fast track agricultural development. Some countries in Africa have also experienced food shortage due to some natural disaster which includes flood, pest attack, insect infestation and drought. In some countries, the uses of manual and outdated method of farming have contributed immensely to the countrys dependence for food supply on some developed countries that … Continue reading

Talking Biotech: Can biotechnology help protect forests from pests … – Genetic Literacy Project

Posted: Published on June 6th, 2017

Forests are under many threats, from new pests and pathogens, to invasive trees, to climate. The advancement of these traits by far exceeds the natural response of trees to acclimate, and outpaces the efforts to traditionally breed trees for forest conservation and restoration. Dr. Ellen V. Crocker is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Kentucky. She talks about the current threats to forests including sudden oak death, chestnut blight and the emerald ash borer. She also discusses efforts in integrating new biotech tools in forest improvement, including genetic engineering, speed breeding, and gene drive approaches. Hosted by Dr. Paul Vincelli (@Pvincell). These Are Actual Biology Courses Offered At Evergreen State College – The Daily Caller

Posted: Published on June 6th, 2017

Evergreen State College, the site of viral student protests over the past two weeks, offers multiple courses in its biology department that veer dramatically from the hard sciences, with themes like feminism, race and power. While the school offersmore traditional biology courses like General Biology and Anatomy and Physiology, it also hasclasses that provide more details about feminism and social movements than with the study of human or plant life. Evergreen State Colleges Biology Department will offer a course during the 2017 fall semester and 2018 spring semester entitled,Reproduction: Gender, Race, and Power. The course will provide students with an overview of human reproduction, but will pay attention to gender and race as vectors of power that affect how reproduction is discussed, legislated, and experienced in the United States. The course description claims that biology is shaped and defined by cultural norms. One of the primary goals of the course is to collectively dismantle the idea that women are defined as such by an innate reproductive capacity. To achieve this end, students will be required to read texts that address the experiences of trans and gender-nonconforming individuals, and discuss the ways in which contraception, abortion, forced sterilization, genetic testing, and other … Continue reading

Authors retract two plant biology papers over duplicated images – Retraction Watch (blog)

Posted: Published on June 6th, 2017

Plant scientists have issued two retractions after noticing several images had been duplicated within and across the papers. The papers both appeared in March 2002 in The Plant Cell and The Plant Journal. The last author on both papers Jonathan Jones, a professor and group leader at The Sainsbury Laboratory in Norwich, UK took responsibility for the duplications. He told us: As last author I was responsible for checking the papers but did not notice the similarities between figures in the different papers. I regret this and took action as soon as I realized there was an issue. Both papers went through peer review and the issue was not picked up at that point either. Susana Rivas, the first author on both papers, has collaborated with beleaguered plant scientistOliver Voinnet and was a second author on one of his eight retractions(which wecoveredhere). The editor-in-chief of TPJ Christoph Benning said that, after the authors contacted them, the journals looked into the issue, confirmed the duplications and then retracted the papers: The authors contacted TPJ and TPC at about the same time. TPJ and TPC launched independent investigations into the matter that led to the findings described in the two retraction notices. … Continue reading
