Rocker with cerebral palsy uses band to change perceptions at … – Tulsa World

Posted: Published on May 27th, 2017

PRYOR Brandon Mendenhall looks back now, and he understands his grandfathers motives. Mendenhall is the founder and guitarist of The Mendenhall Experiment, which is scheduled to perform at 11:30 p.m. Saturday on the AXiS Entertainment Campground Stage at the Rocklahoma music festival in Pryor. Many years ago, Mendenhall might have needed the assistance of a walker or braces to be able to navigate his way around a stage. Now he gets around just fine, thanks in part to nine corrective surgeries. Mendenhall has cerebral palsy, a neurological disorder that sabotages muscle control and motor function. Never mind all that, Mendenhall decided when he was a kid he wanted to be in a rock band. Of course, he was met with a chorus of You cant do that. I heard that all day, every day, he said, adding that people told him he couldnt be this or that because his body wasnt cut out for it. Then when it came time when I had an interest in music, some doctors told my grandparents that it would be impossible for me to play an instrument. So they forbid me to do that until I was old enough to be rebellious to say, … Continue reading

As a young woman in her 20s,Christina Smallwood had been just trying to get rid of a few pimples. Prescribed the medication Accutane to treat her acne, she never thought twice about what long-term effectsit might have until she and her husband Josh had trouble conceiving a baby after getting married. She was shocked to discover that there is a suspected link between Accutane and the Diminished Ovary Reserves condition she was diagnosed with, leaving her witha low chance of conceiving naturally. Now 32, Smallwood, a hairstylist, and her husband, Josh, 32, a project manager from Eastvale, CA, are the proud parents of a 3-year-old daughter, Finley, through an open adoption. And Finley, like their own story, is anything but ordinary. Despite a normal pregnancy, Finleys birth mother went into labor prematurely and the baby was born via an emergency C-section at only 31 weeks gestation. The first time she laid eyes on her daughter, Smallwood remembers, was a magical moment. I stared at her in the little incubator and was crying and stroking the glass, promising her the world, she says. Ill never forget telling my husband, Im sure every parent says this, but I feel like this little girl … Continue reading

TBI Blogs: This Wheelchair-Bound Doctor Pioneered Spinal Cord Injury Treatment & Rehabilitation in India – The Better India (blog)

Posted: Published on May 27th, 2017

May 26th is the birthday of Dr Mary Verghese, who pioneered Indias first specialised facility to rehabilitate persons with spinal cord injury. Quality Rehabilitation is still the only way out, as there is no cure for spinal cord injury anywhere. Dr Vergheses vision for rehabilitation in India was inspired by her experience with spinal cord injury, that imposes multiple disabilities at one stroke. When Dr Verghese had a glimpse of what Quality Rehabilitation could do for a person with spinal cord injury in Australia in the late 1950s, her thinking was limited to what it meant for her life. This rehabilitation experience in Australia sparked the vision of a specialised rehabilitation facility in India, when none existed at the time. Dr Verghese was well-placed to pursue her ambition of becoming a gynaecologist, having completed her MBBS in 1952 from one of Indias highly rated colleges, Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore. As doctors who had devoted their lives to the needy were around her at her alma mater, she received good basic care. The motivation provided by Dr Paul Brand, globally renowned as the pioneer of tendon-transplant operations that restore functioning of hands and feet in persons with leprosy, gave Dr. … Continue reading

Parents of boy critically injured in hit-and-run bus crash thank God, others for his survival – LancasterOnline

Posted: Published on May 27th, 2017

Noam Weaver was ejected and pinned under a bus carrying more than a dozen Lancaster Mennonite students in East Lampeter Township. The first news account we read about the accident in which our son was critically injured said that he was fighting for his life, the letter, signed by Mike, Sheri, Noam and Eden Weaver, begins. Anyone who knows our Noam knows that he is energetic and persistent, so that statement could not have been truer, the letter continues. With injuries to his spleen and lungs and fractures of his pelvis, ribs and right arm, and severe abrasions on his face and left elbow, his life indeed hung in the balance. Most of the 14 students and two adults hurt in the crash came out with only minor injuries. Besides Noam, a 16-year-old boy was also seriously hurt. On Wednesday, Lancaster County District Attorney Craig Stedman said the conditions of both boys had improved, and they are expected to recover from their injuries. The district attorney said Irvin was driving a Chevrolet Malibu registered to his parents at the time of the crash. Irvin has been cited five times for driving under a suspended license since 2004, police said. Irvin, … Continue reading

Posted: Published on May 27th, 2017

Multiple sclerosis can cause a variety of symptoms: changes in sensation (hypoesthesia), muscle weakness, abnormal muscle spasms, or difficulty moving; difficulties with coordination and balance; problems in speech (dysarthria) or swallowing (dysphagia), visual problems (nystagmus, optic neuritis, phosphenes or diplopia), fatigue and acute or chronic pain syndromes, bladder and bowel difficulties, cognitive impairment, or emotional symptomatology (mainly major depression). The main clinical measure in progression of the disability and severity of the symptoms is the Expanded Disability Status Scale or EDSS.[1] The initial attacks are often transient, mild (or asymptomatic), and self-limited. They often do not prompt a health care visit and sometimes are only identified in retrospect once the diagnosis has been made after further attacks. The most common initial symptoms reported are: changes in sensation in the arms, legs or face (33%), complete or partial vision loss (optic neuritis) (20%), weakness (13%), double vision (7%), unsteadiness when walking (5%), and balance problems (3%); but many rare initial symptoms have been reported such as aphasia or psychosis.[2][3] Fifteen percent of individuals have multiple symptoms when they first seek medical attention.[4] Bladder problems (See also urinary system and urination) appear in 7080% of people with multiple sclerosis (MS) and they … Continue reading

Stem Cell Research Experts Meet for Cellular Therapies Conference – KDLT News

Posted: Published on May 27th, 2017

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. Some of the greatest minds in stem cell research came together in Sioux Falls today. One of them is German Doctor Eckhard Alt, for the Cellular Therapies Conference at Sanford Health. Alt has been working in stem cell research for 15 years focusing on using the healing power of stem cells from the patients own body. He says the cells can be used for common ailments like chronic back pain or knee arthritis and because stem cells are produced naturally, they often work better than traditional medicine. If you take the early stem cells, which you find in every organ, you dont need to do artificial modification. You just let nature do what the teaching is and the microenvironment that means the side where you inject the cells will tell the new stem cells hey guys, here is heart, here is muscle, here is kidney And they will do the right job, said Dr. Eckhard Alt. Alt is no stranger to Sanford, in 2015, he was named the leader of the Sanford project, which aims to find a cure for type one diabetes. California’s stem cell agency confronts uncertain future – Capitol Weekly

Posted: Published on May 27th, 2017

News by DAVID JENSEN posted 05.23.2017 C. Randal Mills, the 45-year-old CEO of Californias $3 billion stem cell research program, is a man who loves his milestones. A private pilot, he charts his course in the air from one specific point to the next. Three years ago, Mills brought that same sort of navigation to the state stem cell agency. Miss one of the agencys milestones, and if youre a stem cell scientist you may not crash and burn, but you could lose millions of dollars in research funding from the state. Since the agencys inception, it has spent money at the rate of $22,000 an hour. But it has yet to finance a stem cell therapy that is available to the general public. Mills has left an indelible stamp on the agency with his emphasis on concrete, measurable results. But he is resigning from the research program at the end of June in the midst of what some say is its last stage. His surprise departure to head the worlds largest bone marrow donor organization shocked many in Californias stem cell community. And it added to the unease about its future along with the future of possible stem cell … Continue reading

The Sam Houston State Kinesiology Department in Huntsville, Texas, and Huntsville Memorial Hospital (HMH) in Alabama have partnered together to provide a new educational experience in cardiology medicine for graduate students. The new program allows students to observe multiple procedures in the HMH Heart and Vascular Center, guided by Guarav Aggawala, MD. Students can see angioplasties, stent placements and other diagnostic procedures in the cath lab. [We] are extremely grateful to Huntsville Memorial Hospital for allowing our students to continue their education outside the walls of the university, said Matt Wagner, PhD, an associate professor at Sam Houston. The openness and willingness to answer all of our questions displayed by HMH, Dr. Aggarwala, Margaret Gulledge and all of the staff there are extremely appreciated. The opportunity to see what happens in the real world was invaluable to our students. It was an outstanding day and an outstanding learning experience.
