CHENEY, Kan. (KWCH) -- Like a proud parent, Gay Gower talks about her grandson's accomplishments as he graduates from Cheney High School in Cheney, Kansas. "For his use of technology with his chair, he received Infinitech outstanding technology achievement," she said. But that's not all. Her grandson, Dustin Gower, has also been featured in his high school newspaper multiple times. "He made some artwork and he donated that as part of their community school service day," Gay said. The recognition means so much for the family because Dustin is a unique 17-year-old. "He has cerebral palsy," Gay said. "He was born prematurely and it's been in effect since then. It was diagnosed when he was nine months old." But, his diagnosis has not stopped Dustin. With the use of special buttons and handles, Dustin is able to move himself around on his wheelchair by using only his hand, chin and mouth. "Just because you don't have use in a certain limb, it doesn't mean you can't use another one," Dustin said. To bring awareness to the many things people like Dustin can do, he created a Facebook page called Do not look down at a handicapped person. "I don't want … Continue reading

Victims want prevention and treatment, not more incarceration – Street Roots News

COMMENTARY | Oregon legislators are considering a bill that reflects these preferences Crime survivors have a seat at the public safety table, but to ensure that criminal justice policy solutions reflect victims needs, advocates should always seek more ways to elevate those voices. So at this public safety crossroads, while Oregon lawmakers debate whether to open a second prison for women, its fortuitous that a first-of-its-kind study has emerged to shed light on survivors perspectives on criminal justice policies. The National Survey on Victims Views confirms that theres no unified victims voice and that people impacted by crime are as diverse a group as any. The survey does reveal some general preferences among survivors, though. In the broad-reaching paper, findings include identifying the groups that are most vulnerable to crime, assessing how incidents impact victims, asking whether the criminal justice system is meeting survivors needs, and inquiring about victims perspectives of the criminal justice system and public safety policies. This last set of responses is one that merits Oregons attention right now, and there we find that the overwhelming majority of crime victims believe that the criminal justice system relies too heavily on incarceration, and strongly prefer investments in prevention … Continue reading

Treatment for Parkinson’s might work for Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s too: Study – Firstpost

Posted: Published on May 24th, 2017

New York: An effective treatment for Parkinson's disease might also work for Alzheimer's and Huntington's diseases too as researchers have found that abnormal proteins found in these neurodegenerative diseases all share a similar ability to cause damage when they invade brain cells. The finding potentially could explain the mechanism by which Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's and other neurodegenerative diseases spread within the brain and disrupt normal brain functions. Representational image. Getty Images "A possible therapy would involve boosting a brain cell's ability to degrade a clump of proteins and damaged vesicles," said study senior author Edward Campbell from Loyola University Chicago. "If we could do this in one disease, it's a good bet the therapy would be effective in the other two diseases," Campbell said. Neurodegenerative diseases are caused by the death of neurons and other cells in the brain, with different diseases affecting different regions of the brain. Alzheimer's destroys memory, while Parkinson's and Huntington's affect movement. All three diseases are progressive, debilitating and incurable. Previous research has suggested that in all three diseases, proteins that are folded abnormally form clumps inside brain cells. These clumps spread from cell to cell, eventually leading to cell deaths. Different proteins are implicated … Continue reading

Antibiotic may protect brain cells against Parkinson’s disease: Study – Bel Marra Health

Home Health News Antibiotic may protect brain cells against Parkinsons disease: Study It is easy to recognize someone with Parkinsons disease. They often have a noticeable tremor, a shuffling gait, and move very slowly. Parkinsons is a progressive disorder of the nervous system that affects nearly one million Americans. The older demographic typically has Parkinsons, with the average age of developing being 60.The disease has no cure, but there are treatments with the goal of controlling symptoms as much as possible. New research has introduced another treatment option that comes from a widely used antibiotic commonly used to fight bacterial infection. Parkinsons is thought to develop in response to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Certain neurons in the brain responsible for the production of dopamine gradually break down and die. This results in several changes in the brain, including the presence of Lewy bodies and alpha-synuclein found in Lewy bodies. According to researchers, doxycycline helps reduce the toxicity of alpha-synuclein. This discovery actually occurred many years ago and by accident no less. A previous alternative treatment to Parkinsons was being tested on mice models, and the mice remained healthy with it. However, the mice were accidentally fedchow containing … Continue reading

Cerebral Palsy Guide: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment Options

What Is It? Cerebral palsy is the name given to a large group of disorders that affect muscles and movement. These disorders begin early in life and result from brain injuries or problems with brain development before birth. Although the specific brain injury or problem causing cerebral palsy does not worsen, the movement problems can vary over time. Cerebral palsy is caused by damage to the parts of the brain that control muscles and movement. There are many possible ways that the brain can be damaged, including problems during pregnancy, infection, stroke, genetic problems, lack of oxygen, severe jaundice or diseases that cause the brain to develop abnormally. Cerebral palsy can also occur after birth, such as when there is an infection of the brain or a head injury. There are four basic types of cerebral palsy: Spastic Stiff, difficult movement Dyskinetic or athetoid Involuntary and uncontrolled movement Ataxic Poor coordination and balance Mixed Combination of these types According to the United Cerebral Palsy Association, 8,000 infants and 1,200 to 1,500 preschoolers are diagnosed with cerebral palsy every year. Alba Somoza works as an artist who teaches children in New York City. She and her twin sister Anastasia, both 33, were born prematurely with cerebral palsy. Peter Hodges two daughters fight cystic fibrosis daily, their medications, doctor visits and hospitalizations costing about $1 million in health care benefits a year. Should the Republican-controlled Senate upend insurance similarly to what the House of Representatives has already approved, their lives could be jeopardized, he said. Hodge worries that his older daughter could end up on a newly defined Medicaid, with spending and other limits determined by the states. His younger daughter could face lifetime caps on the amount his insurance plan would pay for her treatment. "People with cystic fibrosis and their families are terrified, absolutely terrified," said Hodge, who works in technology in South Florida. Trump Administration Bolstered by High Employment Rate Congressional attempts to revamp the health care system have been overshadowed by the drama centered on the White House: the Russian meddling in the U.S. presidential election, President Donald Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey and the appointment of a former FBI director, Robert Mueller, as a special counsel.
