A Stanford scientist on the biology of human evil – Vox

Posted: Published on May 23rd, 2017

What drives human behavior? Why do we do what we do? Is free will an illusion? Has civilization made us better? Can we escape our tribal past? These questions (and many, many others) are the subject of a new book called Behave: The Biology of Humans at Our Best and Worst. The author is Robert Sapolsky, a biology professor at Stanford and a research associate with the Institute of Primate Research at the National Museums of Kenya. In a brisk 800 pages, Sapolsky covers nearly every facet of the human condition, engaging moral philosophy, evolutionary biology, social science, and genetics along the way. The key question of the book why are we the way we are? is explored from a multitude of angles, and the narrative structure helps guide the reader. For instance, Sapolsky begins by examining a persons behavior in the moment (why we recoil or rejoice or respond aggressively to immediate stimuli) and then zooms backward in time, following the chain of antecedent causes back to our evolutionary roots. For every action, Sapolsky shows, there are several layers of causal significance: Theres a neurobiological cause and a hormonal cause and a chemical cause and a genetic cause, and, … Continue reading

Posted: Published on May 23rd, 2017

Our next articlein our Life in College and Women in STEM Series features Dublin High School Class of 2016 graduate and UC Irvine freshman Emily Bryant. Emily is currently pursuing a major in biological sciences at UC Irvine Mary Morehead: Transitioning from high school to college, and moving away from home, can be a big deal for many students. What helped you transition to life at UC Irvine? Emily Bryant: My planner definitely helped me. Without my planner I would have forgotten some of the things I was supposed to do, a planner helped me stay organized. Taking AP classes at Dublin High School really helped prepare me for college-level classes. I especially recommend AP Bio, AP Chem and AP Calc if you are planning to pursue biology in college. My first year biology class was my AP class from high school in a nutshell, with perhaps a little more detail. When youve already seen the material once it really helps prepare you. Morehead: Have you decided on a major? Bryant: At UC Irvine, at least for biology, you can work towards a general biology major and then in your third year you can choose a more specific major. Im … Continue reading

Physical Therapy Students Volunteer to Teach Gross Anatomy to Local High School Students – Pacific University

Posted: Published on May 23rd, 2017

Recently, more than 100 high school students from Aloha High School and Faith Bible High School toured the gross anatomy labs on Pacific Universitys Hillsboro Campus as a capstone experience for their year-long anatomy class. Students and chaperones alike communicated their gratitude at the opportunity to learn from the human cadavers, with many students expressing their surprise at how different the muscles and organs of the body look in real life as compared to the images in textbooks. This event would not have been possible without the volunteer work of twelve first-year physical therapy students (pictured below) and the generous educational gift provided by our body donors. Grey's Anatomy comes of age – The Straits Times

Posted: Published on May 23rd, 2017

Those who tuned into Grey's Anatomy when it first aired in 2005 may remember the constant shenanigans of its junior doctors, which became a hallmark of the popular show. But after 12 seasons, those surgical interns have grown up, so do not expect them to be too preoccupied with getting frisky in a supplies closet. Star Jesse Williams, who has played plastic surgeon Jackson Avery on the show since 2009, says: "You've seen a lot of characters go through 13 years of growth and they're not kids anymore." This is why the new season, which debuts in Singapore on Friday at 9pm (Star World, Singtel TV Channel 301 and StarHub TV Channel 501), will tackle more grown-up problems such as "what is it like to be an adult with a marriage or divorce and kids who are growing up". "They're not 20something interns making out in the closet. This year, we've really embraced the evolution of the characters," the actor tells reporters in Los Angeles earlier this year. Williams, 35, confirms that this will also be true of Jackson and his ex-wife and colleague April Kepner, played by Sarah Drew, who joined the cast in 2009 too. "We are getting … Continue reading

Premier’s NEO Kids visit is good news for the pediatric centre, doc says – Sudbury.com

Posted: Published on May 23rd, 2017

While she wasn't there to announce money for the project, Premier Kathleen Wynne's visit to NEO Kids Tuesday morning is an excellent sign, says a local pediatrician. I think it personally really speaks volumes to at least some point getting some commitment, said Dr. Sean Murray, medical director of NEO Kids. Wynne was at NEO Kids at Health Sciences North on May 23 to tout the province's new OHIP+ Children and Youth Pharmacare Program, which would make prescription medications free to those aged 24 and younger starting next year. During a media scrum, Sudbury.com asked the premier if she supports the NEO Kids project, which would consolidate outpatient pediatric care into a new building on the campus of Health Sciences North. I support good ideas, and what I've seen here today is a really good idea, and there's been a lot of great foundational work done already, Wynne said. She added that it's premature to put a date on when financial support for NEO Kids will be forthcoming from the province. At one point, Wynne deferred the question of provincial support for NEO Kids to Sudbury MPP and Energy Minister Glenn Thibeault, who said he's been working behind the scenes … Continue reading
