Posted: Published on May 17th, 2017

The Minnesota Twins might not be baseballs most powerful team, but they might be the most efficient. The Twins are tied for 21st in the majors with 40 home runs in their 32 games. However, Minnesota is bunching those homers together. In those 32 games, the Twins have hit at least one home run in 24 of them (75 percent). Weekly steroids strengthen and repair muscles – Medical Xpress

Posted: Published on May 17th, 2017

May 16, 2017 Weekly doses of glucocorticoid steroids, such as prednisone, help speed recovery in muscle injuries, reports a new Northwestern Medicine study. The weekly steroids also repaired muscles damaged by muscular dystrophy. The studies were conducted in mice, with broad implications for humans. One of the major problems of using steroids such as prednisone is they cause muscle wasting and weakness when taken long term. This is a significant problem for people who take steroids for many chronic conditions, and can often result in patients having to stop steroid treatments. But the new study in mice showed weekly dosesrather than daily onespromote muscle repair. "We don't have human data yet, but these findings strongly suggest some alternative ways of giving a very commonly used drug in a manner that doesn't harm, but in fact helps muscle," said lead investigator Dr. Elizabeth McNally, the Elizabeth J. Ward Professor of Genetic Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and a Northwestern Medicine physician. McNally also is the director of the Center for Genetic Medicine at Feinberg. The study was published online in May in the Journal of Clinical Investigation. The study showed prednisone directs the production of annexins, proteins that … Continue reading

Naomi Whidden Thanks in part to the efforts of a U.S. congressman, Marines and sailors aboard Camp Lejeune will be eligible to participate in a medical study involving hyperbaric oxygen therapy to treat post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury. Congressman Walter B. Jones has succeeded in advocating for their inclusion in the study that focuses on the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Patients enters a clear chamber for a period of time while the pressure and oxygen levels increase to fill the blood with enough oxygen to repair tissues and restore normal body function, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine website. The study is conducted by Dr. Paul Harch, the Department of Internal Medicine director at Louisiana State University School of Medicine and a clinical professor. In a 2012 study, Harch found blast-induced traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are diagnoses of particular concern in the United States because of the volume of affected servicemen and women from the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. ASK THE DOCTORS by Robert Ashley, M.D. For The Salinas Californian 12:02 a.m. PT May 17, 2017 Dr. Robert Ashley MD(Photo: Provided) Dear Doctor: I am 60-year-old female who suffers from darkening of my face. A doctor did a biopsy and it was determined that I suffer from melasma, which began as soon as I hit menopause. Dermatologists seem unable to help. What can I do? Dear Reader: Melasma is the hyperpigmentation of the skin that occurs mostly upon the sun-exposed areas of the face. This manifests as darker patches of skin that can be irregular and, when severe, cause significant cosmetic disfigurement, which can have a significant impact upon ones social life and the ability to enjoy leisure activities. It has been linked primarily to various alterations in female hormones. In fact, 90 percent of cases occur in women. Potential melasma-inducing changes occur in the third trimester of pregnancy, when estrogen and progesterone levels are higher, and among women who take oral contraceptives. The breast cancer drug tamoxifen, which blocks estrogen receptors, also has been linked to the condition, and for melasma of the arms so has hormone replacement therapy. Menopause may increase the chance of getting melasma in … Continue reading

For me, I couldnt understand why I was feeling so low, Sabato tells Newsmax Health. Texas leans into unproven stem cell treatments, to the dismay of … – STAT

H e made the emotional plea to his colleagues: Pass this bill. It might give somebody like my wife a chance to walk, Texas Representative Drew Springer said through tears late Thursday at the state Capitol in Austin. Id trade every one of my bills Ive passed, every single one of them, to get the chance to hear HB 810. HB 810 is one of three bills being considered in the Texas Legislature that would make it easier for sick people to try unproven therapies at their own risk, and cost. Springers bill would allow clinics offering unapproved stem cell treatments to treat patientsin Texas. HB 661 would permit people with chronic illness to get therapies in early-stage clinical trials not just terminally ill patients, as the states current right-to-try law does. And HB 3236 would allow companies to charge patients for unproven therapies. advertisement The debate in Texas echoes a national discussion over how much access patients should have to experimentaldrugs. For the lawmakers supporting the measures, the issue is about the ability to make ones own decisions about health care and not let bureaucracy get in the way of that. But for stem cell researchers and many patient … Continue reading
