Posted: Published on May 5th, 2017

Ben during one of his therapy sessions A MIDDLEWICH mum is asking a clinical commissioning group to help pay for her sons therapy sessions. Ben Baddeley, from Staffordshire, suffers from Cerebral Palsy, and his mum Amy has been refused funding from North Staffordshire CCG because he is a private patient. Amy said: We were offered help by the CCG to begin with but since they examined him their correspondence with us has been very poor We have put in over 20,000 for Bens treatment over the years and raised it, all and all were asking for back is 150 a week to fund his therapy. Unfortunately we cant keep going on like this because the longer we fundraise, the tougher it gets to come up with ideas. What is a pre-existing condition? – CBS News

Posted: Published on May 5th, 2017

In the new version of the American Health Care Act (AHCA), the Republican bill to replace the Obama-era Affordable Care Act (ACA), one of the major points dividing the GOP conference was the treatment of pre-existing conditions. The guarantee of health care coverage to people with pre-existing conditions has been one of the ACA's most popular features. Under the law, insurance companies cannot refuse to cover those with pre-existing conditions, that is, health issues that pre-date a new health insurance coverage. Insurers also can't charge more or refuse to pay for Obamacare "essential benefits" for any pre-existing condition. And, once enrolled in a plan, insurers can't deny such patients coverage or raise rates based solely on their health. The new GOP plan requires insurers to cover pre-existing conditions, and for those with continuous health care coverage, nothing will change. There are some caveats, though. Insurers would be able to charge more to people with gaps in their insurance coverage. And a recent change, the MacArthur amendment, would allow states to waive some of the Obamacare requirements, including one that's relevant to pre-existing conditions. States that are granted such a waiver would allow insurers to set premiums based on health status … Continue reading

Health care bill says it covers pre-existing conditions. But some are … – CNN

Posted: Published on May 5th, 2017

The Affordable Care Act that rolled out under President Barack Obama mandated that insurers charge everyone the same amount, regardless of their health history, and that they cover essential health benefits, such as prescription drugs, hospitalization and doctors' visits. The Trump administration's American Health Care Act -- which squeaked through in the House on Thursday but must still be voted on by the Senate -- will allow insurance companies to raise prices for those with pre-existing conditions and to not guarantee that treatments are covered. Here's how some people think they may be impacted if the new health care bill becomes law: "I had no history of heart problems but nearly died several times that day," Hayes-Belmont, who lives in Mahwah, New Jersey, told CNN. She received a defibrillator implant by the end of the week. Over the years, her heart continued to weaken and walking up the stairs would leave her winded. Nearly three years ago, doctors performed another surgery to implant a combination pacemaker-defibrillator. It helps her stay alive. But she's worried about what will happen when it's time to replace her device. She had insurance through her employer before she went on Medicare last year. She estimates … Continue reading

I was scared, confused, and inarticulate. Well figure it out, she said. After the shock subsided, my mom went to the library, a musty, quiet safe haven. She was looking for a book about people like me. That day, my mom checked out a memoir called Just Add Hormones and the 1999 Oscar-winning film Boys Dont Cry, the only relevant movie she could find in the librarys extensive DVD section. She came home, excited and relieved to have something to show me. After she sat down with me on the couch, we waited to see what this whole transgender thing was all about. But we didnt make it very far. After the getting ready scene Brandon (Hilary Swank) gets out of the shower, binds his chest tightly with an Ace bandage, then turns to look at himself in the mirror to decide whether to pack with a prosthetic or a rolled up pair of … Continue reading

Texas school officials don’t understand transgender athletes – The … – Washington Post

Posted: Published on May 5th, 2017

By Katelyn Burns By Katelyn Burns May 4 Katelyn Burns is an essayist and a trans woman. She lives in Maine with her two young children. Last week, a Texas court dismissed a lawsuit that sought to ban Texas transgender high school wrestler Mack Beggs from wrestling in the girls division. Beggs was assigned female at birth and has been taking testosterone to raise his hormone levels to that of any other teenage boy as part of his medical transition. Since the University Interscholastic League has explicitly stated that Texas athletes must only compete in the gender divisions of their birth certificates, Beggs wrestles against girls and dominates his competitions. The policy in Texas is unfair to cisgender (non-trans) female athletes, who are forced to wrestle against boys like Beggs, as well as to transgender girls who were assigned male at birth but are on hormone replacement therapy. Texass policy, along with the six other states that define high school athletic gender divisions according to the gender on birth certificates, has no basis in scientific reality when it comes to how hormones work. The difference in musculature between men and women comes entirely from the difference in how efficiently our … Continue reading

4 Ways the Republican Healthcare Bill Could Impact LGBTQ People – TeenVogue.com

Posted: Published on May 5th, 2017

On Thursday, the House of Representatives passed a healthcare bill that dismantles some key parts of the Affordable Care Act. Many have taken to Twitter to express how the health bill could impact them, and the effects are different for everyone. But the impacts also vary for different groups. For LGBTQ people, there are some major changes that could impact the way they access care. According to GLAAD, these potential changes could be disastrous for LGBTQ Americans. The U.S. House rammed through a destructive and dangerous bill that could strip away health insurance from millions of Americans, including many in the LGBTQ community," Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD, said in a statement. "Healthcare is a human right, and no one should be denied access to care because of a preexisting condition or because a program like Planned Parenthood does not fit the ideology of one political party. Now more than ever, its time to buckle down and keep fighting to protect the healthcare that the LGBTQ community deserves. With GLAAD's help, we rounded up four potential consequences for LGBTQ people should the Senate pass the same health bill. The bill could weaken healthcare protections for people with … Continue reading
