'Grey's Anatomy' Sneak Peek: Alex Battles Eliza Over a Kid's Rights – Yahoo TV (blog)

Posted: Published on May 3rd, 2017

When it comes to the kids under his care, Dr. Alex Karev is as protective as a mama bear with her cubs. And as Greys Anatomy fans have seen before, hes willing to toe lines or even cross them to give them the best care. But in this sneak peek from Thursdays new episode, Alex (Justin Chambers) runs into a new force of opposition Eliza Minnick (Marika Dominczyk). A boy named Liam comes into the hospital with a tumor, but his parents refuse surgery due to their religious beliefs. The kid took a train all by himself to ask us for help, Alex pleads toEliza. Actual help, not prayers and olive oil on his head. Eliza doesnt back down. No neurosurgeon will cut into a kids skull without parental consent, because its illegal, she replies. And then, twisting the knife a bit, she notes that with his history assaulting DeLuca and almost going to prison for it perhaps he shouldnt be crossing any lines right now. Greys Anatomy airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on ABC. Read More From Yahoo TV: Excerpt from: 'Grey's Anatomy' Sneak Peek: Alex Battles Eliza Over a Kid's Rights - Yahoo TV (blog) … Continue reading

GTx Announces Results from Preclinical Studies of SARMs in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Models Published in … – Business Wire (press release)

Posted: Published on May 3rd, 2017

MEMPHIS, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--GTx, Inc. (Nasdaq: GTXI) today announced the publication in the journal Human Molecular Genetics of results from preclinical studies supporting the potential efficacy of the Companys SARMs, and in particular GTx-026, for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) treatment. DMD is a rare genetic disorder characterized by progressive muscle degeneration and weakness, affecting approximately 18,000 boys in the United States. Studies examined the treatment of castrated wildtype mice, x-linked muscular dystrophy (mdx) mice, and dystrophin and utrophin double mutant (mdx-dm) mice with GTx-026. Other SARMs in the Companys portfolio, GTx-024 (enobosarm) and GTx-027, showed similar positive effects on muscle mass, function, and histological characteristics. DMD typically afflicts boys around three to five years of age followed by declining physical functions before attaining puberty. Current treatment options for DMD rely on corticosteroids to reduce inflammation, but unfortunately the prolonged use of corticosteroids results in hyperglycemia, osteoporosis, and muscle wasting, which are all counterproductive in this disease, said Ramesh Narayanan, Ph.D., Director, Center for Cancer Drug Discovery and Associate Professor, Department of Medicine, University of Tennessee and a consultant for GTx, Inc. We hypothesize that an androgen receptor agonist may reverse musculoskeletal complications and extend survival in these boys, and in preclinical … Continue reading

A young Auckland woman had the opportunity of a lifetime to get out of her comfort zone and ended up ripping through the Auckland Harbour on a jetski with famous tradies, Logan Dodds andJesse James Cassrels. Writer Grace Stratton, 18, contacted Jesse after he released a videoskydiving from a hot air balloon, wanting to interview him for her website. "I began my blog from a hospital bed, so the opportunities I've gotten mean more than anything to me," Ms Stratton said. Adventurer Jesse offered to take Grace, who has cerebral palsy, out on a jetski trip on the Auckland Harbour on Anzac Day. "I think we both just wanted to do it for us, I wanted to know Jesse's story he wanted to know mine," Grace said. "I was a bit scared that Jesse was doing it because he 'pitied' me but that thought was quickly shut down. Jesse has the biggest heart of anyone I know, and he is honest, non-judgmental, wonderful. Two schoolboys - including one with cerebral palsy in a wheelchair - have been left fighting for their lives in hospital after a horrific blaze tore through a bungalow. The brothers, aged 10 and 13, were carried out of the burning building by firefighters . The younger boy with cerebral palsy was rescued in his wheelchair - while the older brother was trapped in the bathroom screaming according to witnesses before being given CPR by the fire crew. Neighbours say their mum managed to escape from the inferno - holding a baby and covered in ash - before telling onlookers: "I've got kids stuck in the house". The boys both suffered severe burns and are critically ill in Great Ormond Street Hospital, London. Witness Wayne Regan said: I saw the whole thing, I saw children being carried out, it was horrible. The fire was raging and the mum was out on the street in her dressing gown. I just heard screaming from the back and went out, smoke and flames were pouring out the front door. We smashed the window and the older one was shouting and screaming, he was just hiding in the toilet. The firemen pulled him out … Continue reading

Parkinson’s in a dish: Researchers reproduce brain oscillations – Medical Xpress

Posted: Published on May 3rd, 2017

May 2, 2017 "With this new finding, we can now generate in a dish the neuronal misfiring that is similar to what occurs in the brain of a Parkinson's patient," said Feng. Credit: Douglas Levere, University at Buffalo Abnormal oscillations in neurons that control movement, which likely cause the tremors that characterize Parkinson's disease, have long been reported in patients with the disease. Now, University at Buffalo researchers working with stem cells report that they have reproduced these oscillations in a petri dish, paving the way for much faster ways to screen for new treatments or even a cure for Parkinson's disease. The paper is published online today (May 2) in Cell Reports. "With this new finding, we can now generate in a dish the neuronal misfiring that is similar to what occurs in the brain of a Parkinson's patient," said Jian Feng, PhD, senior author on the paper and professor in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at UB. "A variety of studies and drug discovery efforts can be implemented on these human neurons to speed up the discovery of a cure for Parkinson's disease." The work provides a useful … Continue reading
