Parkinson’s disease news: Patients face ‘bleak future’ after no cure found in FIFTY years – Express.co.uk

Posted: Published on April 10th, 2017

GETTY The condition - which affects around 127,000 people in the UK, can also cause hidden symptoms such as poor sleep, bladder or bowel problems, dementia and depression. A charity has warned research into new treatments for Parkinson's disease is falling behind and in urgent need of extra funding. Parkinsons UK said that without greater progress, patients with the progressive shaking disease face a 'bleak future'. The main drug prescribed to people with Parkinson's, levodopa, has not changed in more than 50 years. GETTY The charity has launched its first public fundraising campaign as it marks 200 years since the disease was first identified by physician James Parkinson. Although some of the symptoms of Parkinson's are treatable, currently there is nothing available that can halt or reverse the condition. "In the past 200 years we have made many strides forward, but people with Parkinson's are still waiting for a treatment that can tackle the condition head on, said Steve Ford, chief executive of Parkinsons UK. "Parkinson's can leave people struggling to walk, talk and sleep. Today, we say we won't wait any longer. "That's why Parkinson's UK is spearheading, with the expertise of the research community and the support of … Continue reading

Starpoint staff raises money for Variety Club celebrity twins – Lockport Union-Sun & Journal

Posted: Published on April 10th, 2017

The Starpoint Central School District family saw a couple of familiar faces on their televisions on April 2. Twins Kelly and Kyle Hoffman were this years celebrity children for the 55th annual Variety Kids telethon that supports Women and Childrens Hospital. The two 6-year-olds were born 10 weeks early and each only weighed two pounds, nine ounces. While at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Kelly and Kyle struggled to breathe and eat. They relied on oxygen machines for eight weeks and feeding tubes for six weeks. It was very touch and go while the twins struggled to stay alive. They were eventually allowed to go home with their parents, Stacy and Brian Hoffman, but both twins exhibited a severe delay with gross motor skills and moderate delay with fine motor skills by the time they were 6 months old. The Fricano Primary kindergartners were monitored by the Robert Warner Center and Women and Childrens Hospital. It was a blessing to have the Robert Warner Center. Their recommendation was very helpful and allowed us as parents to increase and add services through early intervention when necessary, Stacy Hoffman said. The therapists there are wonderful. They know how to get children … Continue reading

Back to Browse Journals Journal of Neurorestoratology Volume 5 Wen-Chao Liu, Liang Wen, Hao Wang, Jiang-Biao Gong, Tian-Xiang Zhan, Yuan-Yuan Meng, Xiao-Feng Yang Department of Neurosurgery, First Affiliated Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, Peoples Republic of China Abstract: In the present study, we evaluated the changes in autophagy after hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) treatment for traumatic brain injury (TBI) and investigated whether autophagy takes part in the neuroprotection after HBO treatment. Male Sprague Dawley rats were assigned to four groups randomly: sham injury, sham injury and HBO, TBI, and TBI and HBO. The HBO rats received HBO treatment for 100 min immediately after injury. Rats were sacrificed at 24 h after the brain injury and the levels of cleaved caspase-3 and the number of terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling-positive cells in the injured cortex were measured to determine cell death. The expression levels of autophagy-associated proteins were measured by immunohistochemistry and Western blotting to assess changes in autophagy. Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling-positive cell density and cleaved caspase-3 expression were increased 24 h after TBI. These increases were suppressed by post-TBI HBO treatment. Immunohistochemistry and Western blotting of autophagy-associated proteins showed that TBI can … Continue reading

MS Treatment With Mesenchymal Stem Cells| NSI Stem Cell

Posted: Published on April 10th, 2017

NSI Stem Cell Centers have years of experience in regenerative medicine. All therapies are FDA guidelines-compliant, and include the treatment of several neurological conditions that include multiple sclerosis and Parkinsons Disease. So how does stem cell therapy as an MS treatment work? Lets take a closer look: The core reason behind the symptoms and suffering of multiple sclerosis has to do with erosion and damage to the myelin sheath. The myelin sheaths line the part of the nerve cell called the axon. Axons are the nerve fibers that transmit information to different neurons, muscles and glands. The myelin sheaths primary function is to increase the speed of the impulses that travel along the axons. The main ways that the MSCs used in stem cell MS treatment work are by triggering re-growth of the myelin sheaths and improving the health of existing nerve cells. But MSCs also stimulate the re-grow of entirely new healthy nerve cells to replace damaged ones. NSI Stem Cell Centers MS treatment is FDA guidelines-compliant. By harvesting a small sample of fat from the patients thigh, abdomen or buttock, an abundant source of MSCs is acquired. A local anesthetic at the point of harvest is the only … Continue reading

MS Relapses: Causes, Symptoms and Treatments – Multiple …

Posted: Published on April 10th, 2017

The majority of people diagnosed with multiple sclerosis have a relapsing form of the disease, characterized by unpredictable episodes (called relapses or exacerbations) of acute worsening of neurologic function. During a relapse, you might experience new symptoms and/or a worsening of previous or existing symptoms. What causes a relapse? Relapses are caused by acute inflammation in the central nervous system which can cause a variety of symptoms. Sometimes relapses are marked by new lesions in the white matter of the brain or spinal cord which can be seen on MRI scans. Neurologists will often prescribe a 3- or 5-day course of high-dose intravenous steroids to reduce inflammation and speed resolution of a relapse. Symptoms With the onset of a relapse, you may experience a dramatic change in symptoms, such as muscle weakness which makes lifting your arm difficult or a case of optic neuritis resulting in temporary blindness or altered color vision in one eye. Or perhaps you suddenly have trouble with slurred speech or bladder control. A relapse is defined by new or worsening symptoms which last for more than 24 hours and are separated by more than 30 days from a previous relapse. While symptoms of a relapse … Continue reading

Scientific illustration breeds fine art and biology at Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History – Santa Cruz Sentinel

Posted: Published on April 10th, 2017

SANTA CRUZ >> In biology, the old axiom form follows function means that an organisms structure is formed in direct correlation to its purpose. Think Darwins finches. When it comes to art, utility is often sacrificed for form. Beyond their ability to intrigue or inspire, most works of art are not useful. The Santa Cruz Museum of Natural Historys The Art of Nature hits a sweet spot between art and science. Now in its 29th year, the annual show showcases 20 California artists whose illustrations of insects, plants, birds, mammals, landscapes and microorganisms are also gorgeous research tools. As a result, its not surprise that many of the artists are also scientists or scientists at heart. Ben Witzke is a professional herpetologist he studies amphibians and reptiles whose skill as an artist led him to CSU Monterey Bays scientific illustration program. Im more compelled to be out in the field flipping logs, but a professor of mine, Dugald Stermer, convinced me to combine zoology with illustration, said Witzke. Witzke found that his focus on illustration made him a stronger zoologist. His work exhibited in The Art of Nature depicts a little green heron intently eyeing a hatchling Western Pond Turtle … Continue reading

Capcom Shares A Look At The Over 20-Year-Old Anatomy Guide Used By Street Fighter Artists – Siliconera

Posted: Published on April 10th, 2017

By Casey . April 9, 2017 . 5:30pm Capcom has recently shared a look at a very integral anatomy guide that was created and has been used by the Street Fighter team for over 20 years. During this years GDC, Capcom art director Toshiyuki Kamei referenced the guide, which had been compiled back in the mid-90s and edited by former Capcom artist Akira Yasuda. Since then, the guide has been used to teach other artists at Capcom how to recreate characters that are visually consistent with the games. Kamei went on to note the guides age, saying its a pretty old document, but that is still very valuable to them. You can check out a few excerpts from the guide below, and find more from it at Capcoms Japanese blog. Video game stories from other sites on the web. These links leave Siliconera.
