Capcom reveals the 20-year-old guide it still uses today. By Wesley Yin-Poole Published 04/04/2017 Capcom has published scans of a 20-year-old guide it still uses today when creating Street Fighter characters. That's Demitri Maximoff from Darkstalkers on the cover. At GDC last month, Capcom's Toshiyuki Kamei delivered a talk on the art direction of Street Fighter 5. As part of it, he discussed Anatomy: A Strange Guide for Artists, a document created 20 years ago around the time Darkstalkers was being made. This document was edited by legendary Capcom artist Akira "Akiman" Yasuda, who intended for it to help teach the company's artists the rules of exaggerated anatomical features to be followed when making cool-looking pixel art. Now, Capcom has published scans of the guide on its website, and while the accompanying text is in Japanese, we still get a decent idea of what Anatomy: A Strange Guide for Artists is all about. The cover shows Demitri from the Darkstalkers series, and inside we see figure drawings similar to the style of Andrew Loomis, the American illustrator, alongside notes. "It explains shortcuts and rules about how we take musculature and a character's frame and make a sprite out of it," … Continue reading

Posted: Published on April 5th, 2017

The day before law enforcement arrested the Rev. Kenneth Adkins in August 2016, he admitted to Georgia Bureau of Investigators agents he sent photos of his male anatomy to a man hes accused of molesting when that person was underage. Adkins is on trial in Glynn County Superior Court regarding multiple felonies for allegedly engaging in sexual acts with two victims A.J., a boy, and T.V., a girl when they were both 15 years old, between August 2009 and March 2010. Prosecutors played for the jury a recording of the GBIs interview with Adkins, in which after a friendly back-and-forth, the agents began pressing Adkins for clearer answers on his involvement with evidence they already had in hand. At one point, they specifically questioned his involvement with two photographs of a black males private parts sent from Adkins public relations companys email account to A.J. in November 2014. One agent could be heard saying, I know it was sent from your phone to your email to (A.J.). Adkins then said he only sent the photos because A.J. asked for them. That also occurred well after A.J. reached majority age, and Adkins reiterated that he did not mess around with children. … Continue reading

Here’s Why Benitec Biopharma Stock Soared 79.7% Higher This Morning – Motley Fool

Posted: Published on April 4th, 2017

What happened Shares of Australian healthcare company Benitec Biopharma (NASDAQ:BNTC) rose almost 80% this morning after the company announced that it had published data in Nature Communications, an open-access scientific journal, supporting its novel approach to treating oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy, or OPMD. As of 11:45 a.m. EDT, the microcap stock had settled down to a 55% gain. The preclinical study demonstrated that faulty genes at the root of OPMD could be silenced and then replaced with working copies through a gene-editing technique known as DNA directed RNA interference, or ddRNAi. Mice that underwent the gene replacement therapy displayed several important benefits including a reduction in muscle fibrosis (the scarring of connective tissue) and returning to normal muscle strength. Image source: Getty Images. The data from the preclinical mouse model study clearly have investors looking ahead to the prospects of clinical trials with human patients. That's not exactly a stretch, either. In January the company gained Orphan Drug Designation from the European Union using the very same preclinical results and will look to move into a phase 1 trial in the near future. Orphan Drug Designation is applied to drugs treating rare diseases and grants special additional protections if the treatment … Continue reading

Mumbai, Apr 4 (PTI) Three Bangladeshi patients, suffering from an incurable muscular dystrophy, today underwent first stem cell therapy at a Navi Mumbai based treatment centre. "We applied a simple therapy to the patients. We took out the stem cells from their bone marrow in the hip bone and after the required processing we injected it back into their body. "We will wait for the results as to how they respond to such treatment. Meanwhile, physiotherapy and occupational therapy is being offered to them as well," Avantika Patil, coordinator between the patients and the treating centre told PTI. Patil, is part of the team of NeuroGen, a brain and spine institute that keeps the track of its patients. "We learnt about the patients through an article in an international newspaper and decided to contact them as we specialise in treating such diseases. "I am also in contact with one Noor Khan from Bangladesh, an activist who helped the three patients to furnish documents and visa procedures," she said. A Mumbai-based organisation specialising in such diseases, Meditourz, in collaboration with NeuroGen based in Navi Mumbai, offered to provide treatment to them. Oftentimes, Rutgers University conducts research on topics that affect the student body and the surrounding community. And in a study that was published in the Journal of Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics, Rutgers University did exactly that. The study focused on the development of pediatric evaluations and the delays that occur when patients with attention deficits, hyperactive disorder (ADHD), autism and cerebral palsy seek treatment. And through this research, it was discovered that the average national wait time for someone seeking developmental pediatric evaluations is anywhere between five to six months. The reason for this? The Rutgers study found that in the entirety of the United States, there are only 1,000 pediatricians who are trained to specialize in the treatment of these specific disorders. But that's not all. The study took a closer look at appointments made for pediatric evaluations in Spanish and discovered thatabout one-third of the programs for these evaluations did not offer any accommodations for those who spoke other languages. The study was conducted using a method known as the mystery shopper strategy, where, in this case, a bilingual research assistant contacted several pediatric programs asking to make an appointment for an evaluation for his son who was … Continue reading

Judge may visit brain-injured man to decide case of ‘major importance’ – Irish Times

Posted: Published on April 4th, 2017

Experts on both sides all agree, at the end of life, he will suffer a fatal respiratory infection but dont agree how that should be managed A severely brain-injured young man is at the centre of an important High Court dispute between doctors and his parents over whether he should be resuscitated if his condition deteriorates. The parents are opposing the HSEs application for orders giving doctors discretion not to administer various treatments, including CPR, if his condition deteriorates further. The president of the High Court, Mr Justice Peter Kelly, who described the case as of major importance, may visit the man in hospital. Because the man is a ward of court, the judge must decide whether the orders sought are in his best interests. The parents are in court for the case, which opened on Tuesday. A senior doctor involved in the mans care said she discussed his situation on many occasions over years with his parents, in line with Medical Council guidelines. Those discussions were often difficult, and the parents did not agree the man was minimally conscious or did not communicate. Because she considered the discussions had reached an impasse, she recommended an application be made last … Continue reading

New Study Reveals Economic Impact of Patients with Traumatic Brain Injury – Business Wire (press release)

Posted: Published on April 4th, 2017

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The long-term healthcare costs for patients suffering from a traumatic brain injury (TBI) with evidence of motor impairment are significantly higher than those of the general population, according to new research presented by SanBio, Inc., a scientific leader in regenerative medicine for neurological disorders. The findings from the study Economic Burden of Illness for Patients with Traumatic Brain Injury Resulting in Chronic Motor Impairment, were presented at the World Congress of Brain Injury in New Orleans on Friday, March 31. Costs of TBI patients were highest during the acute phase of the injury. However, even in the second year post injury, TBI patients with evidence of motor impairment incurred excess costs of nearly $27,000 per patient. These costs appeared to stabilize at a rate of approximately four times higher than those of the control group costs. Higher costs of TBI patients were associated with elevated use of all medical resources analyzed, including inpatient and outpatient services, emergency department visits, and physical therapy and rehabilitation services, as well as prescription drug use. Patients with traumatic brain injuries incurred significantly greater costs than the control group across the board for medical services, said Dr. Damien Bates, Chief Medical Officer … Continue reading

Cord blood stem cells offer promising treatments for Cerebral Palsy

Posted: Published on April 4th, 2017

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a neurological disorder that is caused by damage to the brain, often during pregnancy or childbirth. This brain damage causes impaired motor movements and muscle tone. CP can also lead to other conditions, such as learning disabilities and speech problems. Unfortunately, there is no cure for CP, and treatments are limited. To find a better treatment for CP, scientists have turned to regenerative medicine with cord blood infusions. This treatment utilizes the stem cells found in umbilical cord blood. Stem cell injections are promising treatments for multiple conditions, because they have the natural ability to development into any other cell type. For example, skin cells and brain cells look different, and they perform very different functions. Stem cells, depending where they are injected and under which conditions, have the capability of developing into any type of cell. Regarding CP, stem cells could be injected into the damaged central nervous system, where they may be able to become healthy brain cells to improve motor and cognitive function. This is referred to as regenerative medicine, because the stem cells are used to regenerate brain tissue. Several studies have been performed by injecting stem cells into the central nervous … Continue reading
