A Frederick film shows veterans struggling with suicide – WHAG

Posted: Published on March 27th, 2017

FREDERICK, Md. - A new movie is shining a bright light on Americas returning soldiers and the struggles they have with traumatic brain injury even after their battles have come to an end. Since Americas war on terrorism began, more than 350,000 servicemen and women have come home with traumatic brain injury, or TBI. Many soldiers call TBI the silent killer, leading 22 vets to take their own lives every single day. For director Matthew J.C., thats 22 - too many. "Our mission was to take 5 traumatic brain injury and PTSD suffering veterans and find out if we can give them a brain spec scan then twelve weeks of sessions of in-light wellness and light therapy" says Matthew J.C., film director. According to J.C. and his team, that light therapy is gaining ground as a new, effective form of treatment against TBI. "The in-light wellness system is a poly chromatic light therapy system thats treating traumatic brain injury with led and near-infrared light technology. You have the infrared light penetrating to get to the damaged cellular level which allows oxygen, carbon dioxide but most importantly nitric oxide" says Andrew Kelley, former army recon medic. Possible new target for treatment of multiple sclerosis: A host of … – Science Daily

Posted: Published on March 27th, 2017

In the relentless battle against multiple sclerosis (MS), U of A researchers recently discovered an entirely new cellular mechanism -- an underlying defect in brain cells -- that may to be blame for the disease, and a potential hallmark that may be a target for future treatment. The finding opens the door to a brand new avenue of study in the battle against the cryptic autoimmune disorder that strikes more Canadians than any other nationality worldwide, said Fabrizio Giuliani, study co-author, U of A neurologist and medical director of the Northern Alberta MS Clinic. "Scientists have been pointing to the mitochondria, the powerhouse of the cell, as a possible link to MS, but have not been able to decipher how they malfunction. Ours is the first study that combines clinical and lab experiments to explain how mitochondria become defective in MS patients," said Thomas Simmen, study co-author and cell biology professor. Specifically, using human brain tissue samples, the researchers discovered how two sub-components within a cell are miscommunicating in patients with MS, and identified how at least one protein (Rab32) is swooping in to trigger the dangerous dysfunction. "A part of the cell that stores calcium (ER or endoplasmic reticulum) … Continue reading

Once completed, the center would help scientists are in their research to explore how the cells can be used for a better quality of life for patients suffering from genetic diseases, for instance. Such efforts have already been fruitful, as discoveries in the field have raised hope for people with incurable diseases such as blood cancers, disorders of the immunity system and metabolism, to have a better standard of life through stem cell transplant. 12,000 square meters The center is being built … Continue reading

Cerebral palsy is a neurological disorder that affects the part of the brain that controls muscle movements. Because of this, cerebral palsy can permanently affect balance, muscle coordination and other body movements. Cerebral palsy typically appears in infancy or childhood and is usually diagnosed before the age of three. It is the most common childhood disability, affecting one in every 500 babies. Although there is no cure, it is not a degenerative disease so children can begin learning to manage it immediately after diagnosis. There are a number of treatment options available to help manage the symptoms of cerebral palsy and can be tailored to suit each individuals needs, depending on the specific effects and severity of their condition. Treatment options include physical or occupational therapy, speech therapy, medication, corrective surgery, braces or other orthotic devices, wheelchairs or walking aids and communication aids. The earlier treatment begins, the more opportunities a child has to make adjustments and grow accustomed to new ways of accomplishing tasks. Cerebral palsy can cause difficulty performing voluntary movements. Some symptoms include stiff muscles, a different gait or way of walking and muscle tone that is too stiff or too floppy.
