This Biology Teacher Disproved Transphobia With Science – TeenVogue.com

Posted: Published on March 6th, 2017

We've seen a lot of bigotry over the past year, from the passage of North Carolina's HB2, which bans transgender people from certain bathrooms, to the Trump administration rescinding civil rights protections for transgender students in public schools. And if you've ever tried to counter this type of discrimination, you might have come up against someone who truly believes that their bigoted viewpoints are based in science. A biology teacher from New York saw this scenario on Facebook, and she was fed up. Instead of just scrolling by, Grace Pokela destroyed a transphobic post with science. According to Observer, Grace saw someone post a meme on Facebook that tried to pass transphobia off as scientific. The post argued that there are only two sexes in sexual species, as determined by chromosomes. The post says anything other than an XX (female) or XY (male) chromosome pairing is a mutation, and it argues those chromosome pairing also determine our gender. We already know sex and gender are different, so this post is automatically untrue but Grace pointed out there's actually a whole lot of science that proves it even more false. Parkinson’s Linked to Changes in Gut Bacteria – PsychCentral.com

Posted: Published on March 5th, 2017

Adding to the growing body of evidence suggesting a link between the gut microbiome and Parkinsons disease, a new study reveals that the disease itself, as well as the medications used to treat it, appear to have distinct effects on the composition of the trillions of bacteria in the gut. The findings are published in the journal Movement Disorders. Our study showed major disruption of the normal microbiome the organisms in the gut in individuals with Parkinsons, said Haydeh Payami, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Neurology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine. At this point, researchers arent sure which comes first. Does having Parkinsons cause changes in the gut microbiome, or are these bacterial changes a predictor or early warning sign of Parkinsons? What they do know is that the first signs of Parkinsons often arise around the same time as gastrointestinal symptoms such as inflammation or constipation. The human gut hosts tens of trillions of microorganisms, including more than 1,000 species of bacteria, she said. The collective genomes of the microorganisms in the gut is more than 100 times larger than the number of genes in the human genome. We know that a … Continue reading

The devastated parents of Mirror campaign boy Ben Baddeley will confront NHS chiefs at the centre of the row over his treatment on Tuesday. Cerebral palsy sufferer Ben, 12, was due to see a NHS specialist about his vital physiotherapy treatment - only for his appointment to be cancelled at the last minute. North Staffs Clinical Commissioning Group promised parents Amy and Gary he would be assessed. Then Dr James Palmer, Clinical Director for NHS Services for NHS England, wrote to them to state our local offices were unable to find any contact with you. Yet the Baddeleys met North Staffs CCG last JUNE - and had been in regular contact for nine months. Cheryl Hardisty, their director of commissioning - who promised to resolve this long standing issue - is set to attend a board meeting on Tuesday at the YMCA in Stoke. Amy, 32, intends to be there in order to confront her face to face. She said: We finally received a response from Cheryl but have been passed to a patient services team. "Even the public are sending in letters on our behalf. We will hold a peaceful protest. Amy and husband Gary, 40, of Silverdale, Staffs., … Continue reading
