Cardiology programs provide students with an understanding of core medical knowledge, practice and research. Several programs, like those offered at the nationally-ranked University of Pennsylvania and Stanford University, provide medical residencies and fellowships to guide M.D.s through their medical education and career. Ranked sixth in the nation in internal medicine according to U.S. News & World Report in 2015, Penn Medicine's Department of Medicine offers 12 academic divisions, including cardiology. Penn Medicine offers residency in cardiovascular surgery in the divisions of cardiovascular surgery and general thoracic surgery. The program, based on clinical research and application of surgical techniques, gives residents and fellows the chance to study in all three subspecialties of cardiovascular surgery, including adult cardiac, general thoracic and congenital heart surgery. Penn Medicine also offers a 3-year Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship program in which the third year is based on the fellow's specific interests within the field of cardiovascular medicine. Stanford University's medical school, ranked 8th in internal medicine by U.S. News & World Report in 2015, offers medical training at three levels, including medical education, residency and fellowship. Students interested in cardiology will first follow a core curriculum, and eventually will have the opportunity to choose a scholarly concentration … Continue reading

The Division of Cardiology continues to grow rapidly, adding new faculty and programs, while maintaining the commitment to outstanding patient care, education and research. Innovative therapies available in the MUSC cath lab include ASD closures, left atrial appendage occlusion, renal nerve denervation, percutaneous valve repair, LDL aphoresis and alcohol septal ablation for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Adrian VanBakel, MD, PhD leads a comprehensive program for Congestive Heart Failure and transplantation. The Division is active in the implantation of LVADS, led by Jennifer Peura, MD; systolic heart failure, led by Michael Craig, MD and diastolic heart failure, led by Michael Zile, MD. A unique state-wide network is in place for research and clinical management of these patients. Despite increasing competition, referrals to MUSC have increased dramatically over the past five years. Clinical services provided include general cardiology, electrophysiology, cardiac catheterization, imaging, congenital heart disease, congestive heart failure and cardiac transplant. MUSC was one of the first five centers in the world to use a 64-slice CT machine for cardiac imaging and remains a leader in this field. Under the direction of Michael Craig, MD, our fellowship programs continue to grow. This highly competitive program receives over 400 applications annually for the six available … Continue reading

DNA sequencing – Wikipedia

Posted: Published on October 21st, 2016

DNA sequencing is the process of determining the precise order of nucleotides within a DNA molecule. It includes any method or technology that is used to determine the order of the four basesadenine, guanine, cytosine, and thyminein a strand of DNA. The advent of rapid DNA sequencing methods has greatly accelerated biological and medical research and discovery. Knowledge of DNA sequences has become indispensable for basic biological research, and in numerous applied fields such as medical diagnosis, biotechnology, forensic biology, virology and biological systematics. The rapid speed of sequencing attained with modern DNA sequencing technology has been instrumental in the sequencing of complete DNA sequences, or genomes of numerous types and species of life, including the human genome and other complete DNA sequences of many animal, plant, and microbial species. The first DNA sequences were obtained in the early 1970s by academic researchers using laborious methods based on two-dimensional chromatography. Following the development of fluorescence-based sequencing methods with a DNA sequencer,[1] DNA sequencing has become easier and orders of magnitude faster.[2] DNA sequencing may be used to determine the sequence of individual genes, larger genetic regions (i.e. clusters of genes or operons), full chromosomes or entire genomes, of any organism. … Continue reading
