Stem cells: Cells that are able to (1) self-renew (can create more stem cells indefinitely) and (2) differentiate into (become) specialized, mature cell types. Embryonic stem cells: Stem cells that are harvested from a blastocyst. These cells are pluripotent, meaning they can differentiate into cells from all three germ layers. Embryonic stem cells are isolated from cells in a blastocyst, a very early stage embryo. Once isolated from the blastocyst, these cells form colonies in culture (closely packed groups of cells) and can become cells of the three germ layers, which later make up the adult body. Adult stem cells (or Somatic Stem Cell): Stem cells that are harvested from tissues in an adult body. These cells are usually multipotent, meaning they can differentiate into cells from some, but not all, of the three germ layers. They are thought to act to repair and regenerate the tissue in which they are found in, but usually they can differentiate into cells of completely different tissue types. Adult stem cells can be found in a wide variety of tissues throughout the body; shown here are only a few examples. The Three Germ Layers: These are three different tissue types that exist during … Continue reading

Evidence for Evolution–Embryology – New York University

Lecture notes Darwin's evidence for evolution: Embryology I. The "facts of embryology" A. There is usually a difference in form between embryo and adult. B. Serial structures (e.g., segments, limbs) are usually identical in the embryo, but specialized and diverged in the adult. C. Different species in the same Class (e.g., mammals) often have very similar embryos, even if the adult forms are quite different. D. Embryonic structure is unrelated to "conditions of existence", unless the embryo is active (e.g., feeding) E. Embryos are sometimes more highly "organized" than adults (e.g., some parasitic forms). II. The "principles" that explain these facts A. Adult variations supervene at a rather late stage B. Variations in adult features are inherited (expressed by progeny) at correspondingly late stages C. These "principles" are generally but not universally true (an exception was the tumbler pigeon) when one looks at empirical evidence from domesticated varieties III. How do these principles explain the facts? A. Breeders select on adult characters, regardless of the juvenile characters B. Given this, and the two principles, the young of a new variety and the parental stock will tend to be more similar than the adults C. Darwin extrapolates this to larger groups: … Continue reading

The Sound of an Emergency Doctors routinely use stethoscopes to listen for abnormalities in heart and lung function. Recently, the instrument helped Frank Haugland, M.D., save Ava Davidsons life. It was an amazing and unusual thing, says Frank Haugland, M.D., Ph.D., a Cardiologist and Cardioelectrophysiologist with The Iowa Clinic. In my career, I will likely never again hear what I heard that day. The Sound It was early April 2014. But new guidelines released in November by the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology take a more holistic approach Read More What Does Sex Have To Do With Heart Disease? Stem cell transplants | Cancer Research UK

About stem cell transplants Stem cell transplant is a treatment to try to cure some types of cancer, such as leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma. You have very high doses of chemotherapy, sometimes with whole body radiotherapy. This has a good chance of killing cancer cells but also kills the stem cells in the bone marrow. We need stem cells in order to make red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Doctors can collect stem cells from your blood or a donor's. After high dose treatment you have the stem cells into your vein through a drip. You have injections of growth factors before, and sometimes after, the stem cell transplant. Growth factors are natural proteins that make the bone marrow produce blood cells. You have them as small injections under the skin for between 5 and 10 days. Sometimes you may have low doses of a chemotherapy drug too. The chemotherapy and growth factor injections help your bone marrow to make lots of stem cells. These stem cells then spill out of the bone marrow into the bloodstream, where they can be collected. Collecting the stem cells takes 3 or 4 hours. You lie down on a couch. Your … Continue reading

'Mini' stem cell transplant: How does it treat cancer …

Posted: Published on September 25th, 2015

Although a stem cell transplant can be a lifesaving procedure forpeoplediagnosed with a bloodcancer or blood disorder, the standard transplant may not be appropriate for all patients. This is because the conditioning regimen (the intensive chemotherapy and/or radiation treatments preceding the transplant) is very taxing on the body, and certain patients such as those who are older cannot tolerate the toxicity associated with theprocess. Because nonmyeloablative, or "mini," transplants rely on the anti-tumor effects of the donor cells, patients can be given a lower dose of chemotherapy resulting in an easier-to-tolerate treatment regimen with fewer side effects. But at City of Hope, this does not rule them out of a potentially curative transplant, thanks to our care team's specialization in nonmyeloablative transplants (also known as a reduced intensity, or "mini," transplant.) Here, Stephen J. Forman, M.D., theFrancis & Kathleen McNamara Distinguished Chair in Hematology and Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation, explains how this relatively new procedure works. What is a nonmyeloablative stem cell transplant and how does it work to treat cancer? Nonmyeloablative stem cell transplant is a way of doing a transplant that is not as intensive as traditional transplant regimens. It uses lower doses of drugs than a standard transplant … Continue reading

Research – Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine …

Posted: Published on September 25th, 2015

Every one of us completely regenerates our own skin every 7 days. A cut heals itself and disappears in a week or two. Every single cell in our skeleton is replaced every 7 years. The future of medicine lies in understanding how the body creates itself out of a single cell and the mechanisms by which it renews itself throughout life. When we achieve this goal, we will be able to replace damaged tissues and help the body regenerate itself, potentially curing or easing the suffering of those afflicted by disorders like heart disease, Alzheimers, Parkinsons, diabetes, spinal cord injury and cancer. Research at the institute leverages Stanfords many strengths in a way that promotes that goal. The institute brings together experts from a wide range of scientific and medical fields to create a fertile, multidisciplinary research environment. There are four major research areas of emphasis at the institute: Theres no way to know, beforehand, which particular avenue of stem cell research will most expediently yield a successful treatment or cure. Therefore, we need to vigorously pursue a broad number of promising leads concurrently. --Philip A. Epilepsy Treatment Options – Epilepsy Cemter …

There's good news for people with epilepsy: Treatment options have improved dramatically over the last decade. Although there's still no cure, epilepsy can usually be managed quite well with the right treatment, which now may include antiepileptic medications, surgery, and vagus nerve stimulator therapy. Understanding all of these options can help you talk knowledgeably with your doctor about finding the right treatment plan to manage your particular situation most effectively. Epilepsy Medications Antiepileptic medications are usually the first line of defense in treating epilepsy most of those with epilepsy respond well to drug therapy. In more than a decade, at least a dozen new medications have hit the market and more are in the pipeline, giving physicians more options than ever. There are now more than 20 different types of seizure medicines on the market. Unfortunately, however, many people with epilepsy experience unpleasant side effects from their medications - dizziness, drowsiness, weight gain or loss, and/or headaches - but think they have to put up with them to keep the seizures at bay. In fact, a different medication might be a better solution for them. "The real goal is to get people to become both seizure- and side effect-free, which … Continue reading
