Published on April 02, 2015 By Sebastien Burke, Contributor HEALTH. Last Thursday, at 8:30 am, Deputy Mayor Bob Monette proclaimed March 26th as a city-wide day of awareness for Epilepsy, by raising the Epilepsy Ottawa flag over City Hall. Monette said he feels very strongly about this movement. Photo Deputy Mayor Bob Monette and members of EPE raising the EPE flag over City Hall. In Canada there are more than 300,000 with seizure disorders. In Ottawa alone, there are over 15,000 people affected by epilepsy and more than 3,000 have intractable seizures, meaning they have limited options for seizure control. Epilepsy is a local and national issue. According to Epilepsy Canada, every day, 42 Canadians are told that they have a seizure disorder. A parent of a child with a seizure disorder from Orlans, who wishes to stay anonymous, spoke to the Orlans Star about the challenges their child faces. The anxiety associated with the disorder has stunted my childs independence. [My child] is scared to walk home because they might have a seizure. This child has a very dangerous form of epilepsy. While they are having a seizure, the part of the brain that controls heart and lung functions … Continue reading

Where we stand on autism

The reasons for increased prevalence aren't entirely known, though the CDC says it's not solely because of better diagnosis. Autism's causes, as well, are still not completely understood, according to Paul Wang, head of medical research for Autism Speaks. "We're still working on that question," Wang said in an interview. Both genetic and environmental factors have been identified, he said. "We don't have an adequate explanation." Behavioral therapy, Wang said, is the cornerstone of treatment now. Drug companies have worked in the space, primarily focusing on genetic subsets of Alzheimer's, including a condition known as Fragile X syndrome. Two drugs have been approved for symptoms associated with autismJohnson & Johnson's Risperdal and Otsuka's Abilifythough they don't get to the core symptoms, Wang said. They can also be associated with side effects, including weight gain. Read MoreBiogen Alzheimer's drug shows promise "Autism really is a big spectrum," Wang said. It ranges from very mild to kids who are severely affected, "who have severe sensory issues and sometimes medical issues." There is also a growing focus among some in the community on what's known as neurodiversity, Flinn said, acceptance of neurological differences without the need to treat or cure them. Common myths about autism explained

Posted: Published on April 3rd, 2015

Myth: Treatments turn kids into robots Some say that behavioral therapy, the recommended treatment for autism, is highly impersonal, which Dr. Skowron said is simply not true. People say it turns kids into robots, said Dr. Skowron, who has been working in applied behavioral analysis for 20 years. It seems very personal to me. Based on the needs of the kids you form a strong bond with the person. The families play a big role in the treatment, and they can have a great affect on the treatment of the child. Doctors typically prescribe antipsychotic medications to treat severe symptoms of autism, which can include anxiety, depression, or obsessive-compulsive disorder. The best and most effective treatment for autism is applied behavior analysis, said Dr. Skowron. There is scientific evidence showing the effectiveness of treating autism this way. Any other methods just dont have the same body of research toward them.
