Though Maggie (Kelly McCreary) arrived at Grey Sloan Memorial long after the hospital shootingboth of themthe bomb in the body, and the plane crash, shell get her first taste of danger during Thursdays episode of Greys Anatomy when she gets sucker punched by a patient. The best part, for me, was that the patient who punches Maggie is the dad from The Wonder Years, Dan Lauria, McCreary tells EW. I had my first total fan girl, geek-out moment while we were shooting because I loved that show as a kid. I was like, As long as its Dan Lauria, sure. Go right ahead, punch me in the face. The incident ends up being a big turning point for Maggie. It turns out to be this reallyfor lack of a better wordstriking moment in the episode where you figure out what the problem with this patient is, McCreary says. Im working on a case with Ben [Jason George] and Richard [James Pickens Jr.] involving a patient who exhibits signs of Alzheimers and Maggie winds up having an epic foot in her mouth moment where she gets on the familys case for not keeping the patient out of danger. Embryonic Stem Cells: Prospects for Developmental Biology …

Posted: Published on March 19th, 2015

Abstract Stem cells represent natural units of embryonic development and tissue regeneration. Embryonic stem (ES) cells, in particular, possess a nearly unlimited self-renewal capacity and developmental potential to differentiate into virtually any cell type of an organism. Mouse ES cells, which are established as permanent cell lines from early embryos, can be regarded as a versatile biological system that has led to major advances in cell and developmental biology. Human ES cell lines, which have recently been derived, may additionally serve as an unlimited source of cells for regenerative medicine. Before therapeutic applications can be realized, important problems must be resolved. Ethical issues surround the derivation of human ES cells from in vitro fertilized blastocysts. Current techniques for directed differentiation into somatic cell populations remain inefficient and yield heterogeneous cell populations. Transplanted ES cell progeny may not function normally in organs, might retain tumorigenic potential, and could be rejected immunologically. The number of human ES cell lines available for research may also be insufficient to adequately determine their therapeutic potential. Recent molecular and cellular advances with mouse ES cells, however, portend the successful use of these cells in therapeutics. This review therefore focuses both on mouse and human ES cells … Continue reading

Dolce & Gabbana slam boycott campaign over IVF and adoption row as ‘medieval’

Posted: Published on March 18th, 2015

Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce have slammed calls for a boycott on their brand as "medieval". The designers came under fire after a controversial interview where they were quoted as calling IVF babies "synthetic". Elton John, whose two sons Zachary, five, and Elijah, two, with husband David Furnish were conceived through IVF treatment, led calls to boycott the brand and was backed by stars including Ricky Martin and Courtney Love. Hitting back, Gabbana said: "Boycott Dolce & Gabbana for what? They don't think like you? This is correct? This is not correct. We are in 2015. This is like medieval. It's not correct." He continued: "I believe in the traditional family. It is impossible to change my culture for something different. It's me... I respect all the world, all the culture." During a joint interview with CNN, Gabbana's design partner and former lover Dolce was asked if he supported having children through IVF. He replied to say: "Yeah, I don't have anything bad, because the beauty of the world is freedom... "We love gay couple. We are gay. We love gay couple. We love gay adoption. We love everything. It's just an express of my private point of view." Dolce … Continue reading

Study: Wealth and power key to men’s genetic success

Posted: Published on March 18th, 2015

For decades, evolutionists have believed that when it comes to human reproduction, it's a case of survival of the fittest. However a new study into human genetics actually shows that wealth and power play an even stronger role. AUT Professor Steve Pointing says in the last few thousand years, brawn's role in deciding which men pass down their genes is becoming less important. "If a particular organism has favourable traits for environment, it will pass on more of its genes and have more offspring than if you have less favourable traits," he explained on Firstline this morning. "But there's growing evidence now that in humans, the reverse is true we're actually dictating evolution because the wealth and power aspect of our society is actually driving evolution of our species." The research, conducted by Arizona State University, looked at the Y chromosome of 500 men worldwide. They found that between 4000 and 8000 years ago, there was a bottleneck in genetic diversity for males. At the same time, female genetic diversity was increasing rapidly implying at the time, only a few men were mating with many women. "The smoking gun for that is the change from a nomadic, hunter-gatherer society to … Continue reading
