Greys Anatomy Recap: Is Derek Cheating on Meredith?

Posted: Published on March 13th, 2015

After three weeks of medical traumas, the doctors on Grey's Anatomyare back to focusing on their love lives and all is right(ish) in the Grey Sloan world. Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) is distracting herself from thinking about Derek by throwing herself into work - i.e. taking on extra cases and starting her morning rounds in the middle of the night, not to mention pitching a "no-hitter" since the middle of November. But can she keep up the streak? Not sooner does Jo (Camilla Luddington) bring up Meredith's record to Stephanie (Jerrika Hinton) than an earthquake shakes Grey Sloan, conveniently leaving Maggie stranded in an elevator with the (super cute) radiology staffer Ethan, and Bailey (Chandra Wilson) needing protection from Ben (Jason Winston George) in the hallway, loath as she is to admit it. Ben's knight-in-shining-armor routine leaves Bailey with the perfect opportunity to ask if he's called his transgender sister lately. (He hasn't.) Grey's Anatomy recap: Was Dr. Herman's operation a success? After a few weeks' absence, April (Sarah Drew) is back on the floor, Maggie (Kelly McCreary) and Callie (Sara Ramirez) are dealing with a very sexually adventurous elderly patient, and Alex (Justin Chambers), Jo and Meredith are treating a … Continue reading

Home TV Grey's Anatomy Greys Anatomy season 11, episode 15 recap: Stayin alive A natural disaster may last for a few seconds on tonights Greys Anatomy season 11, episode 15, but our recap dives right into the lasting aftershock. Case of the Week: An earthquake hits the Seattle area, leaving a wide variety of injuries and complications from the woods, to the ER, to the OR. The synopsis teaser for this weeks Greys Anatomy season 11, episode 15 led viewers to believe that Maggies time in the elevator would be more than a few seconds long. Sure there was an episode worth of story to follow her run in with sexy radiologist Ethan (seriously, where does the HR department find these doctors?), but we expected more of what the elevators tend to offer on the show. Now that the two major story arcs, April Kepner and Nicole Herman, are out of the way, the rest of Grey Sloan Memorials problems rise to the surface. First up, Bailey is still trying to convince Ben to focus on reconnecting with his estranged sister. Perhaps a rotation on plastics with Jackson is simply an invitation to the plastics posse, but it may also … Continue reading

Shonda Rhimes, creator of the hit ABC series Greys Anatomy, shook things up quite literally during tonights Season 11 installment titled I Feel The Earth Move. Episode 15 began on an intense note with Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) cautiously operating on a patient. But it was Jos (Camilla Luddington) attentiveness while watching the surgery that caught our eyes -- and Stephanies (Jerrika Hinton), too! Steph questioned why the resident was studying Meredith like a hawk. And as it turned out, it was because Meredith was on a lucky streak. 'Grey's Anatomy' recap: 'I Feel the Earth Move'

Posted: Published on March 13th, 2015

Merediths been pretty absent from episodes as of late, and thats apparently because shes been busy operating her little heart out: Since Derek left on Nov. 14, Merediths done 89 surgeriesand hasnt lost a single patient, something that causes Jo to call her magic. Meredith doesnt know that shes on a so-called streak though, or that Jos secretly bowing down to her. Shes too busy working. So busy, in fact, that she skips out on a trip to D.C. to see Derek. And shes okay with that: Merseems to have really taken Yangs hes not the sun, you are goodbye speech to heart and is all about taking care of herself and acknowledging that, no, the worlddoesntrevolve around her husband. Alex is suspicious, and he and Grey spend most of their screen time (which isnt much) arguing about relationshipsand tending to an injured family, but that part is fairly boring especially compared to Merediths musings on herself and her relationship. Meanwhile, Callie and Maggie are dealing with an older woman who broke her hip during sex. She says things like razz my berries and are you getting laid? to her doctors, who react with both discomfort and amusement. The are … Continue reading

Boosting A Natural Protection Against Alzheimer's Disease

Posted: Published on March 13th, 2015

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine have identified a gene variant that may be used to predict people most likely to respond to an investigational therapy under development for Alzheimers disease (AD). The study, published March 12 in Cell Stem Cell, is based on experiments with cultured neurons derived from adult stem cells. Our results suggest that certain gene variants allow us to reduce the amount of beta amyloid produced by neurons, said senior author Lawrence Goldstein, PhD, director of UC San Diego Sanford Stem Cell Clinical Center and UC San Diego Stem Cell Program. This is potentially significant for slowing the progression of Alzheimers disease. AD is the most common cause of dementia in the United States, afflicting one in nine people age 65 and older. The genetic risk factor investigated are variants of the SORL1 gene. The gene codes for a protein that affects the processing and subsequent accumulation of beta amyloid peptides, small bits of sticky protein that build up in the spaces between neurons. These plaques are linked to neuronal death and related dementia. Previous studies have shown that certain variants of the … Continue reading

Stem cells lurking in tumors can resist treatment

Malignant tumors contain stem cells, prompting worries among medical experts that the cells' transformative powers help cancers escape treatment. New research proves that the threat posed by cancer stem cells is more prevalent than previously thought. Until now, stem cells had been identified only in aggressive, fast-growing tumors. But a mouse study at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis shows that slow-growing tumors also have treatment-resistant stem cells. The low-grade brain cancer stem cells identified by the scientists also were less sensitive to anticancer drugs. By comparing healthy stem cells with stem cells from these brain tumors, the researchers discovered the reasons behind treatment resistance, pointing to new therapeutic strategies. "At the very least, we're going to have to use different drugs and different, likely higher dosages to make sure we kill these … Continue reading

Poster : The identity and properties of mesenchymal stem cells

Posted: Published on March 13th, 2015

Csar Nombela-Arrieta and Leslie E. Silberstein Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent progenitor cells that were originally identified in the bone marrow stroma, where they regulate key stages of haematopoiesis. They have since been identified in other anatomical locations, although their physiological roles remain unclear. MSCs can be expanded in vitro and, under appropriate conditions, can give rise to several cell types, including bone and fat precursors. The in vitro-expanded cells have remarkable immunoregulatory properties and effects on tissue repair; because of this, their potential use as therapeutic agents in vivo is being extensively studied. This Poster by Csar Nombela-Arrieta and Leslie E. Silberstein provides an overview of the identity of MSCs in vivo and the effects of their in vitro-expanded progeny, and highlights key questions that remain in the field regarding the biology of these elusive cells.
