People With Eczema Are Itching For Better Health Care

Posted: Published on March 4th, 2015

The itchy rash of eczema, also sometimes called atopic dermatitis, can be painful and unsightly. Meredith Rizzo/NPR hide caption The itchy rash of eczema, also sometimes called atopic dermatitis, can be painful and unsightly. It might seem silly to miss work for a rash. But people who have eczema often have to put a lot of time and money into managing the itchy, inflamed rashes they get over and over. Lindsay Jones, who lives in Chicago, was diagnosed with eczema when she was 2 weeks old. "I try to take proactive measures to keep my skin calm, but the flare-ups are inevitable," Jones, age 34, tells Shots. Last year, her eczema got so bad that she missed work to go to the doctor and took a sick day just to treat her skin. Other days she would sneak in and out of her office so that only her immediate team would see her. "Because my flare-ups were so bad and they were on my face, it's not like I could put makeup over it," she explains. "I looked a little scary." Jones isn't alone in her struggle to manage eczema; almost 10 percent of people in the United States have … Continue reading

RoboKind Reveals Cutting-Edge Autism Research at National Press Club Event

Posted: Published on March 4th, 2015

WASHINGTON, D.C. (PRWEB) March 04, 2015 With an estimated 1 in 68 American children affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), the prevalence has increased ten-fold in the past 40 years. RoboKind, the world leader in social robotics, today unveiled pioneering research results at a National Press Club Newsmakers news conference demonstrating that its humanoid robot Milo increases engagement in children with autism while enhancing the development of social and emotional skills. A leading expert on autism therapy and intervention programs, Dr. Pamela Rollins, MS, Ed.D., associate professor of Communication Disorders at the University of Texas at Dallas, presented preliminary research that indicates children who interact with social robots are more engaged in autism therapy compared to interactions with humans. By helping children with ASD identify emotions and specific social interactions, they are better able to achieve academic and personal success. Dr. Rollins teaches graduate-level courses on the assessment and treatment of children and ASD at the Callier Center for Communication Disorders. She has more than 30 years of experience researching, teaching and clinically practicing with children on the autism spectrum. Ive witnessed children who struggle with social situations immediately connect with Milo and reveal skills they had never before exhibited … Continue reading

Silverdale youngster's care costs parents 2,000 per month

Posted: Published on March 4th, 2015

Ben Baddeley with parents Gary and Amy THE parents of brave Ben Baddeley say his vital physiotherapy is costing about 2,000 per month. Cerebral palsy sufferer Ben requires aftercare following an operation to help him walk. But the determined 10-year-old will take part in a 'sponsored pedal' during a fund-raising fun day at Silverdale Workingmen's Club on March 14. Mum Amy, of Silverdale, says she has been told the cost of Ben's aftercare is 'way beyond' what the NHS would pay. Although the family was told by a medic from NHS England he would "seek clarification on the funding arrangements for post-operative rehabilitation", the current position, it appears, has not changed and no extra funding from the NHS will be provided. Now the family is pushing on with fund-raisers to help pay for the treatment, which currently stands at about 2,000 per month. Amy said: "My husband Gary is doing all the overtime that he can at the moment. The next cost will be the hydrotherapy which Ben will need. "But we are grateful for any support we receive." The fun day at Silverdale Workingmen's Club will run from 1pm until 4pm. View post: Silverdale youngster's care costs parents 2,000 … Continue reading

School District 43 must pay $1.5 million for injury of Port Coquitlam student

Posted: Published on March 4th, 2015

A Port Coquitlam boy who suffered a mild traumatic brain injury when a steel volleyball pole fell on his head during preparations for PE class in 2011 has been awarded a $1.5-million settlement plus other costs to cover ongoing treatment, his future care and loss of employment earnings. Jose Marco Reyes, who was 10 and in Grade 6 at PoCos Minnekhada middle school when the accident occurred, suffers from headaches and other symptoms, according to court documents, and will see the funds put into trust until he is 19. School District 43 has been ordered to pay the sum as well as psychologist fees for the student and other charges, although it denied it was liable in the incident. According to a document filed in Supreme Court on Feb. 27, the settlement was based on a belief that it would be beneficial to the boy, among other things, and it means the Reyes family will not proceed with a lawsuit against the district; the trial, originally set for November 2014, has been cancelled. In the original lawsuit filed against SD43, the Reyes family claimed the district was negligent because it allowed Grade 7 students to remove the end posts for … Continue reading
