Why DNA could be the future of data storage

Posted: Published on February 26th, 2015

Story highlights Science is now looking to nature to find the best way to store data in a way that will make it last for millennia Just one gram of DNA is theoretically capable of containing all the data of internet giants such as Google and Facebook Researchers in Zurich wanted to find ways to combine the storage capacity of DNA with the stability of the DNA found in fossils The Zurich team say their process could make the data encoded in DNA readable in 10,000 years' time or even longer Already a storage company called Backblaze is running 25,000 hard drives simultaneously to get to the bottom of the question. As each hard drive coughs its last, the company replaces it and logs its lifespan. While this census has only been running five years, the statistics show a 22% attrition rate over four years. Some may last longer than a decade, the company says, others may last little more than a year; but the short answer is that storage devices don't last forever. Science is now looking to nature, however, to find the best way to store data in a way that will make it last for millions of … Continue reading

Just Based on DNA, Scientists Can Construct an Image of Your Face

Posted: Published on February 26th, 2015

(Credit: Shriver Claes/Penn State) Putting pencil to paper has been the tried-and-true method to illustrate the faces of wanted criminals, but new technology is changing this traditional approach. DNA, rather than an artists skill, is an emerging tool to recreate the face behind a crime. The new forensic technique is called DNA phenotyping. It relies on DNA, found for instance in a drop of blood, to create a simulated face based upon genetic markers. Although the science still has room to grow, start-up companies in the United States are already producing DNA-based sketches to assist police departments in criminal investigations. One of the leaders in this growing field of research is Penn State Universitys Mark Shriver. In a study published in PLOS Genetics, Shrivers team detailed the process. First they compiled a list of known genetic mutations that cause facial and cranial deformations, because these genes, in their normal variations, could give us our distinctive looks. With these genes marked, researchers compared the genetic profiles of people with vastly different faces in order to highlight, through contrast, which genetic variations were at work. For example, the gene responsible for lip size would be expressed differently in someone with luscious lips … Continue reading

Vestal High School Students Put Together Chemistry Magic Show

Posted: Published on February 26th, 2015

Some high school kids are putting a spin on learning chemistry. Vestal High School puts on a chemistry magic show four times during the school year for students in African Road, Clayton, Vestal Hills and Tioga Hills Elementary schools. The show is not your average chemistry lesson. It's Elizabeth Dobell's last year participating in the Vestal High School's chemistry magic show. "I remember when i was in elementary school and coming and seeing the show and so now to be a apart of it...it's all about encouraging younger students to be excited about science and that it's not all facts and numbers and everything but it can be really exciting so the whole thing is its not really magic it's chemistry," said Dobell. All chemistry students are required to take safety certification training courses prior to preparing for the show. The show includes music, dancing, and some pretty impressive tricks. "I like when they lit their hands on fire because I thought it was cool that they could lit their hands on fire but it went out before it touched their hand," said 4th grade elementary school student Jeremy Sager. Students performed a little trick called Methane Mamba. "We dip … Continue reading
