Bionic eye implant lets a blind man see his wife for the first time in 10 years

Posted: Published on February 24th, 2015

By Brian Koerber2015-02-23 16:42:58 UTC Allen Zderad is finally able to see his wife for the first time in more than a decade. Nearly 20 years ago, the 68-year-old Minnesotan's vision began deteriorating. He was diagnosed with a degenerative eye disease called retinitis pigmentosa, a condition that currently has no effective treatment or cure, according to the Mayo Clinic. After 10 years, he had lost nearly all eyesight. However, a clinical trial using a system called Second Sight has given Zderad the ability to see shapes, make out human forms and even see his own reflection in a window. The video above shows the device working for the first time, as Zderad reaches out for his wife. "It's crude, but it's significant," Zderad said in the video. "It'll work." Zderad was the first ideal patient for the clinical trial, which the Mayo Clinic describes as a "bionic eye implant that sends light wave signals to the optic nerve, bypassing the damaged retina. A tiny wafer-like chip was embedded in his right eye, wires attached in a surgical procedure in January, then two weeks later, the rest of the prosthetic device set in glasses was activated." "It's a bionic eye in … Continue reading

Bionic Eye Helps Man to See Wife for First Time in Decade

Posted: Published on February 24th, 2015

A 68-year-old Minnesota man was able to see his wife for the first time in a decade last week after becoming the fifteenth person in the country to receive a "bionic eye" implant. Allen Zderad's career as a chemist ended 20 years ago when his sight began to fail as a result of a degenerative eye disease called retinitis pigmentosa, according to a statement from the Mayo Clinic. Raymond Iezzi Jr., a Mayo Clinic researcher and ophthalmologist, was researching the "Second Sight Argus II" retinal prosthesis system when he encountered Zderad and decided the grandfather of ten would be a good candidate for an implant. Iezzi installed 60 electrodes in Zderad's eye, which interact with a camera in Zderad's glasses and a wearable computer pack to send information to the electrodes implanted in his retina, which then sends signals straight to the optic nerve, Iezzi explained to NBC affiliate KARE. "This is great for this family. It's also very unusual for a scientist like me to be able to actually apply outcomes of what we've worked on for years to help a patient. That's very special," Iezzi said, according to a statement from the Mayo Clinic. Zderad still can't see … Continue reading

New 4m IVF centre opened

Posted: Published on February 24th, 2015

A new unit to help couples have babies has been opened in Glasgow. Health Secretary, Shona Robison, officially opened the Assisted Conception Service Centre at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. The 4m centre has been refurbished with new laboratories and equipment. The centre will provide IVF treatment and is expected to reduce the length of time patients wait before treatment starts. Ms Robison said the investment would ensure fairness in accessing treatment. She said: ""With the new unit's additional capacity and centrally located services, it will also help to significantly reduce the length of time patients have to wait for IVF treatment ensuring equitable access to services across Scotland. "Scotland is leading the way in the provision of NHS IVF treatment with the implementation of a 12 month waiting time target that comes in to force on 31 March. This target, along with our 12 million investment in IVF provision over the last three years, will mean all patients in Scotland will have access to a more generous and fairer service than elsewhere in the UK." NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said it was achieving a better success rate. Andrew Robertson, Chairman, NHSGGC, said: "One of the main benefits of the new … Continue reading

Future Science Group Launches New Open Access Journal: Concussion

Posted: Published on February 24th, 2015

(PRWEB UK) 24 February 2015 Future Science Group (FSG) has launched Concussion, a new open access journal that publishes original research, reviews and commentaries addressing the assessment, management and short and long term implications of this subset of traumatic brain injury, which is gaining increasing attention. As professional sports leagues and parents of young athletes alike are placing more emphasis on concussion prevention and protocol, exciting developments in biomarker research are shedding new light on how to gauge the severity of concussions immediately after injury, as well as indicating future prognosis, said Commissioning Editor Hannah Wilson. Using the open access model, we hope to make the latest advances in basic, translational and clinical research in the field available to the broadest possible audience of readers. Topics covered by Concussion include: Concussion will be supported by an international editorial board consisting of leading experts in the field. Board member Steven P. Broglio, University of Michigan, MI, USA explained: Concussions have become a critical public health issue, resulting in a substantial increase in research. Overview – Embryology

You can see a small selection of the modules's illustrations by clicking on images. Gametes and their predecessor cells (the primordial germ cells) are differentiated from other somatic cells very early, and emigrate from the ectoderm (third week) via the extraembryonic endoderm (fifth week) into the primordium of the future gonads, the gonadal ridge. There, through an interaction with the coelomic epithelial cells, the primordium for the testis evolves in the seventh week, if a Y chromosome is present, or the primordium for the ovary in the eighth week, if it is absent . The development of the testis occurs under the influence of testosterone among other factors. This is produced by the Leydig's interstitial cells that stem from the mesenchyma of the gonadal ridge, in an initial stage of activity (beginning of the 7th week). A second surge of secretory activity of the same cells starts at puberty. This leads to the maturation of the gonadal epithelium and to the growth and lumen formation in the tubuli seminiferi contorti. Spermatogenesis, which takes place from puberty onwards leads to a 64 day-long cycle in which the spermatogonia develop into sperm cells. At the beginning of spermatogenesis three steps of mitosis … Continue reading

House of Lords set to vote on three-parent babies

Posted: Published on February 24th, 2015

Chief Medical Officer Dame Sally Davies is in favour of allowing triple-DNA babies. Peers will vote today on historic legislation which would see the UK become the first country in the world to allow creation of in vitro fertilisation (IVF) babies using DNA from three different people. The chief medical officer for England Dame Sally Davies has urged the House of Lords to approve the amendment to the 2008 Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act and permit the controversial procedures, aimed at preventing serious inherited mitochondrial diseases. MPs, including all three main party leaders, voted earlier this month in the Commons to legalise the mitochondrial donation technique, which critics say will lead to "three-parent babies". Opponents, including church leaders and pro-life groups, have warned that the change has been brought about too hastily and marked the start of a "slippery slope" towards designer babies and eugenics.
