Community Newsletter: Autism Solution Pieces holds many fundraising, community events

Posted: Published on February 22nd, 2015

Autism Solution Pieces is a 501(3) nonprofit organization co-founded by Cindy Schultz and Cathy Wathen, both mothers of sons affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder. Autism Solution Pieces was formed to support the needs for special needs families in our area. Cindy founded Autism Solution Support Group in 2005. The group meets at Festival Foods, 5740 Washington Ave. on the second Tuesday of every month, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. offering support, compassion and resources to special needs families. The group shares years of knowledge as well as updates on the newest treatments and therapies, frequently bringing in special speakers. Seeing firsthand the struggles that families go through in order to provide treatment for their special needs loved one, Cindy and Cathy joined forces to start an organization that would provide grants. Autism Solution Pieces holds many fundraising events, from concerts, Harley rides and carnivals to volleyball tournaments. All the money raised at these events is granted for therapies and treatments. So far, Autism Solution Pieces has given grants for music therapy, art therapy, Rapid Prompting Method, therapeutic equipment, iPads, eye therapy, equine therapy, indoor swings, and much more. Autism Solution Pieces hopes that with the continued help of volunteers, we … Continue reading

Major Recommendations Note from the National Guideline Clearinghouse (NGC) and the Institute for Clinical Systems Improvement (ICSI): For a description of what has changed since the previous version of this guidance, refer to Summary of Changes Report -- July 2012. In addition, ICSI began its transition to the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) system as a method of assessing the quality of evidence and writing recommendations. The recommendations for the diagnosis and initial treatment of ischemic stroke are presented in the form of a table with a list of evidence-based recommendations and three algorithms with 38 components, accompanied by detailed annotations. Algorithms are provided in the original guideline document for: Screening (Ambulatory), Emergency Department in a Stroke-Ready Facility [SRF] Treatment, and Stroke Code. Clinical highlights and selected annotations (numbered to correspond with the algorithm) follow. Quality of evidence (Low Quality, Moderate Quality, and High Quality) and strength of recommendation (Weak or Strong) definitions are repeated at the end of the "Major Recommendations" field. Clinical Highlights Screening (Ambulatory) Algorithm Annotations Contact may occur with one of several medical system personnel, including primary care physicians, other medical specialty physicians, emergency medical services, nursing staff in a clinic or urgent … Continue reading

What You Need to Know About Stroke: National Institute of …

Posted: Published on February 22nd, 2015

Each year in the United States, there are approximately 795,000 strokes. Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death in the country. And stroke causes more serious long-term disabilities than any other disease. Nearly three-quarters of all strokes occur in people over the age of 65 and the risk of having a stroke more than doubles each decade after the age of 55. For African Americans, stroke is more common and more deadly - even in young and middle-aged adults - than for any ethnic or other racial group in the United States. Learning about stroke can help you act in time to save a co-worker, friend, or relative. And making changes in your lifestyle can help you prevent stroke. New treatments are available that greatly reduce the damage caused by a stroke. But you need to arrive at the hospital within 60 minutes after symptoms start to prevent disability. Knowing stroke symptoms, calling 911 immediately, and getting to a hospital are critical. A stroke is serious - just like a heart attack. A stroke is sometimes called a "brain attack." Most often, stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain stops because it is blocked by a clot. The … Continue reading
