The family of a seven-year-old girl who was given just a 40 per cent chance of survival say clinical trials helped save her life. And they are now backing a national Cancer Research UK campaign highlighting the importance of the trials. Isabella Lyttle, from Shelfield, Walsall, took part in an immunotherapy trial to help her fight a rare type of cancer known as neuroblastoma when she was just three. Isabellas parents, Mark and Jennie, want people to see clinical trials as a normal and essential part of research and treatment for cancer. The trials show whether new tests and treatments are safe, what their side-effects are and whether they are better than what is currently used. Mark said: We know from personal experience that clinical trials are vital, both to people like Isabella who received treatment and to future generations. Today, more and more people are surviving thanks to research, and cancer trials are crucial in helping to develop better and kinder treatments. Isabella, a pupil at St Francis Catholic Primary School in Shelfield, was diagnosed with cancer in October 2010 after complaining of a pain in her hip. Her doctor immediately referred her to Walsall Manor Hospital where an … Continue reading

Two UC San Diego Scientists Receive Stem Cell Technology Grants

Posted: Published on February 3rd, 2015

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise The governing board of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) has awarded two University of California, San Diego researchers almost $3 million in combined funding to pursue new technologies intended to accelerate advances moving stem cell therapies out of the lab and into the clinic. The funding was part of almost $30 million in new Tools and Technologies awards announced at CIRMs monthly meeting in San Francisco. Sometimes even the most promising therapy can be derailed by a tiny problem, said Jonathan Thomas, JD, PhD, chair of the CIRM Board. These awards are designed to help find ways to overcome those problems, to bridge the gaps in our knowledge and ensure that the best research is able to keep progressing and move out of the lab and into clinical trials in patients. Shaochen Chen, PhD, professor in the Department of Nanoengineering in the Jacobs School of Engineering and a member of the Institute of Engineering in Medicine at UC San Diego, received a $1.3 million in CIRM funding for development of 3D bioprinting techniques using human embryonic stem cell-derived heart muscle cells to create new cardiac tissue. UCSD scientists awarded $2.7M grants for stem cell research

Posted: Published on February 3rd, 2015

LA JOLLA (CNS) - Two scientists with UC San Diego were awarded a combined $2.7 million in grants from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine to pursue their studies on stem cell therapies, the school announced Monday. Shyni Varghese, an associate professor in the Department of Bioengineering and director of the Bio-Inspired Materials and Stem Cell Engineering Laboratory, received a $1.4 CIRM grant to improve the function of transplanted stem cells. Shaochen Chen, a professor in the Department of Nanoengineering in the Jacobs School of Engineering and a member of UCSD's Institute of Engineering in Medicine, received $1.3 million to develop three-diminensional bioprinting techniques that use heart muscle cells derived from human embryonic stem cells to create new cardiac tissue. The awards were part of almost $30 million in grants announced at CIRM's monthly meeting in San Francisco, according to UCSD. "Sometimes even the most promising therapy can be derailed by a tiny problem," said Jonathan Thomas, chairman of the CIRM Board of Directors. Faversham woman Roisin Kelleher first in UK to receive life-saving stem cell treatment for cystic fibrosis

Posted: Published on February 3rd, 2015

Favershams pioneering patient Roisin Kelleher has become the first person in the UK to receive life-saving treatment for cystic fibrosis. Roisin, of Whitstable Road, returned home from America after spending two weeks in the Dominican Republic undergoing stem-cell transplants. The 20-year-old, who is a pupil at Queen Elizabeths Grammar School, was also diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension in July last year and her health suddenly and rapidly declined. Roisin and her mum Anntoinette lying in bed, with brother Cian Her breathlessness, fatigue and endless amounts of medication and trips to London hospitals had taken a full grip on her life and school and dreams of university became completely out of reach. In a life-changing moment, doctors suggested that Roisin was placed on a waiting list for a double lung transplant, a suggestion that Roisin described as like signing my own death warrant. Roisin Kelleher has cystic fibrosis and pulmonary hypertension. Picture: Tony Flashman But her mother Anntoinette refused to give up hope and discovered Dr Grekos miraculous treatment in the Dominican Republic. Adult stem cell treatment heals the damaged lung tissues by harvesting healthy cells from the patients bone marrow and that of a genetic relative who does not suffer from … Continue reading

Topeka Zoo's bear gets CT scan, stem cell therapy

Posted: Published on February 2nd, 2015

Peek, a 20-year-old American Black Bear living at the Topeka Zoo, is undergoing treatment, including a CT scan, for a back condition, zoo director Brendan Wiley said Monday. Peek came out of her den two weeks ago and her keeper noticed the bears hind legs were wobbly. Peek was given pain medication. However, the condition quickly worsened, Wiley said in a news release. Within the next seven days, Peek continued to lose control of her rear legs. One of the unique things about this scenario is that Peek hasnt acted like anything is hurting her, said Shanna Simpson, animal care supervisor. It is like the front half of her body can no longer communicate with the back half. Peeks illness required the use of a CT scan, which used equipment the zoo doesnt have, Wiley said. Zoo veterinarian Shirley Llizo brought in Larry Snyder and Travis Gratton, of University Bird and Small Animal Hospital, to help harvest fat cells from Peek. This would allow the fat cells to be converted to stem cells to be injected. Peek was tranquilized Jan. 22 and transported to the zoos hospital so the fat cells could be harvested. After the harvest, Peek was transported … Continue reading
