Lansdowne author raises awareness about sickle cell disease

Posted: Published on December 23rd, 2014

Dominique Friend doesn't look like she's sick. But the Lansdowne resident often deals with bouts of pain so severe she ends up in the hospital for weeks. Friend, 44, was born with sickle cell disease, an inherited blood disorder that affects an estimated 90,000 to 100,000 in the U.S., according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention information. Her autobiography "Sickle" was released by Tate Publishing on Dec. 9 in a second edition, after she self-published the book in 2009. In the book, she tells of her struggle with the debilitating disease. Friend said she shared her personal account to raise awareness about the disease, which predominantly affects African-Americans. It is also found in those of Hispanic and Mediterranean descent, according to CDC information. Friend said for as long as she can recall, she has dealt with painful episodes that are characteristic of sickle cell disease. Pain develops when sickle-shaped red blood cells, that should be round like a doughnut, block the blood flow to the chest, joints and other parts of the body, Friend explained. It can last for a few hours to a few weeks and such episodes are called "crises," she said. "I would take the pain … Continue reading

White Southerners Likely To Have More Black DNA Than Whites Elsewhere In The US: Study

Posted: Published on December 23rd, 2014

At least six million Americans who identify themselves as white have more "black" DNA than white people in other parts of the United States, according to a recent study published in the American Journal of Human Genetics. Several states, which have been the focal points of racial tensions in the U.S. over the years, are made up of self-described white people whose ancestors are black, the study claims. Researchers reportedly examined the genetic records of 145,000 people who submitted saliva samples -- where DNA sequence variations are found -- to 23andMe, a California-based private company that provides ancestry-related genetic reports. From the data, researchers determined that people especially from the South have at least 1 percent of African ancestry. The study also found that states with the highest levels of African ancestry, such as South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, are not those with the highest proportions of African Americans. European Americans with African ancestry comprise as much as 12 percent of European Americans from Louisiana and South Carolina and about 1 in 10 individuals in other parts of the South, according to the study. The study also showed that people with less than 28 percent African ancestry identified themselves as … Continue reading

EggBanxx and Connecticut Fertility Practice Create Partnership to Offer Affordable, Safe Egg Freezing

Posted: Published on December 23rd, 2014

Norwalk, CT (PRWEB) December 23, 2014 EggBanxx, which offers egg freezing financing through a national network of fertility doctors, and Reproductive Medicine Associates of Connecticut (RMACT), the leading fertility practice in Fairfield County, are now partners. Through the partnership, women in Connecticut and surrounding areas interested in oocyte cryopreservation commonly called egg freezing can easily identify a board certified expert and secure a financial plan. When choosing a fertility doctor, EggBanxx recommends women find a practice with board certified reproductive endocrinologists that proves itself skilled through exemplary pregnancy rates, has a reputation of a caring staff, and maintains a superior embryology lab, says Jay Palumbo, Director of Patient Care at EggBanxx. That is why RMACT is the right partner for us. RMACT uses the most scientifically advanced form of egg freezing, called vitrification, which significantly improves oocyte survival and pregnancy rates compared to older techniques. Vitrification uses a combination of sugar molecules, electrolytes, and liquid nitrogen, to rapidly freeze eggs in just 15 minutes. This maintains the delicate architecture of the human egg, or oocyte, and virtually eliminates crystallization that had plagued older techniques. Vitrification turns the idea of egg freezing into a scientifically sound, viable option for women, says … Continue reading

Judge issues written order on DNA issue in Lightbourne death penalty case

In this Dec. 5, 2014 file photo, Ian Lightbourne arrives in Judge Robert Hodges' courtroom for a hearing under heavy guard by corrections officers Sgt. Ray Piotti, top left, Cpl. Tunisa Gordon, center and Cpl. Clifton Barrentine. The judge presiding over a decades-old death penalty case where DNA has become a point of contention between both sides has issued a written order that strikes down an argument made by the defense against DNA collection. On Dec. 5, attorneys for Ian Lightbourne, 55, filed into court arguing that the state's request to take a new DNA sample from their client should be thrown out because the trial court, which is being asked to rule on the DNA matter, no longer has jurisdiction over the case. Therefore, the defense argued, Circuit Judge Robert Hodges has no authority to allow for the DNA collection. During the hearing, the defense presented legal precedent that stated when defendants are sentenced to a life prison term the trial court no longer has jurisdiction because the sentence is an indeterminate amount of time. Lightbourne was sentenced to death in 1981 by former Circuit Judge William Swigert. Prosecutors presented trial evidence that Lightbourne raped and fatally shot Nancy … Continue reading

DNA, hormones rational of Isma is shockingly sexist

DAP Wanita says Ismas rational that women are genetically engineered to be homemakers is also irrational and unfounded. GEORGE TOWN: DAP Wanita has slammed a recent statement by Dr Fatimah Zaharah Rosli of Isma that women are predisposed to being mothers and homemakers simply because it is in their DNA. In a statement, Syerleena Abdul Rashid, DAP Wanitas Political Education Director in Bukit Bendera said that Isma made a bad move by making such a baseless statement that clearly discriminated against women. Dr Fatimah Zaharahs claim that women are genetically engineered to assume pre-supposed gender roles is shockingly irrational and unfounded. Offering a possible scientific reason why Dr Fatimah may have this mindset, Syerleena said research had proven that some women experienced internalised sexist attitudes towards other women if they themselves lived in male dominated communities. Syerleena added, Consequently, these women may adapt such attitudes as a protective mechanism stemming from rigid gender roles that further reiterate gender discrimination. Describing Dr Fatimah as a regrettable product of extreme patriarchal social structures, Syerleena also accused Dr Fatimah and her organisation Isma of preventing women and girls from realising their full potential. The hostility this organisation has shown towards Malaysian women is … Continue reading

2014 Dubious Innovations In Cardiology

Dubious Innovative Device: Renal Denervation SYMPLICITY HTN-3wasthe trial that finallyendedthe massive hype over renal denervation, the novel blood-pressure lowering technology. The trial followed in the wake ofthe publication and appearance of hundreds of articles and CME programs virtually guaranteeing that renal denervation would bea cure for treatment-resistant hypertension. Instead the trial showed, definitively and absolutely, that renal denervation, in its current form, and as it had been used in earlier less rigorous trials and in clinical practice in Europe, wasno better than sham treatment. Medtronic, the trials sponsor, and the trial principal investigators, Deepak Bhatt and David Kandzari, deserve credit for supporting the trial andfaithfully reporting the results. Credit is also dueDarrel Francis and his colleagues for having the courage to publicly predictthat the trial would fail to show a large benefit for the device. At the time theywere a voice in the wilderness and have still not received nearly enough credit for their analysis of why the trial would likely fail. Prophets, alas, often go unheeded. Perhaps, after a lot more basic research and development, renal denervation will prove to be a useful tool. But for now there is simplyno excuse for its still being available for clinical use in … Continue reading

ASTM launches industrial biotechnology committee.

Posted: Published on December 23rd, 2014

Stakeholders in the field of industrial biotechnology, including representatives of the medical and pharmaceutical industries, the agricultural realm and other industries have joined together to form a new ASTM International technical committee. Following an organizational meeting on April 14, Committee E62 on Industrial Biotechnology was approved by the ASTM board of directors in June 2014. The Biotechnology Industry Organization defines industrial biotechnology as technology based on biology biotechnology harnesses cellular and biomolecular processes to develop technologies and products that help improve our lives and the health of our planet. Planning for Committee E62 began after a series of meetings between ASTM and the Society of Chemical Manufacturers and Affiliates in early 2013. Larry Sloan, president and CEO of SOCMA, believes that standards to be developed by E62 will play an important role in establishing a more consistent foundation on which to base industry-related incentives and regulations. Without industrial biotechnology standards, we cannot have good policy and without good policy, we cannot have investment, says Sloan. And without investment, the U.S. cannot remain the global innovation leader that it is. Through its subcommittees, E62 will develop test methods, practices and terminology standards focusing on many aspects of industrial biotechnology. Potential topics … Continue reading
