LCT completes patient implants in Parkinsons trial

Posted: Published on December 21st, 2014

LCT completes patient implants in Parkinsons trial Sydney & Auckland, 15 December 2014 - Living Cell Technologies Limited today announced that the final patient has been successfully implanted in its Phase I/IIa clinical trial of regenerative cell therapy NTCELL for Parkinsons disease. The operation took place at Auckland City Hospital last week. The Phase I/IIa clinical trial, led by Dr Barry Snow, is an open-label investigation of the safety and clinical effects of NTCELL in patients who no longer respond to current therapy. Dr Snow MBChB, FRACP, FRCPC, leads the Auckland Movement Disorders Clinic at the Auckland District Health Board and is an internationally recognised clinician and researcher in Parkinsons disease. LCT anticipates presenting the results of the 26-week trial at the 19th International Congress of Parkinsons Disease and Movement Disorders in San Diego in June 2015. Dr Ken Taylor, chief executive, notes that the success of the implant procedure means that LCTs clinical programme remains on track. The treatment phase of the trial has been completed on schedule. We believe NTCELL has the potential to be the first disease-modifying treatment for patients who are failing the current conventional treatment for Parkinsons disease, said Dr Taylor. Muhammad Ali in hospital with pneumonia

Posted: Published on December 21st, 2014

Boxing legend Muhammad Ali was admitted to an undisclosed hospital Saturday with pneumonia, his spokesman Bob Gunnell said. Alis treatment prognosis is good, he said. Ali, who suffers from Parkinsons disease, is being treated by his team of doctors and is in stable condition, Gunnell said in a statement. The illness was caught early, and Ali, 72, is not expected to be in the hospital for long. At this time, the Muhammad Ali family respectfully requests privacy, the statement said. Ali was born Cassius Clay and won an Olympic gold medal as a light-heavyweight at age 18. In 1964, he became world heavyweight champion in an upset victory against then champion Sonny Liston, according to Alis official website. Shortly thereafter changed his name to Muhammad Ali to reflect his conversion to Islam. The boxer was also known for his protest against the Vietnam War and refusal to be drafted into service out of religious conviction. He retired from boxing in 1981 and announced his diagnosis with Parkinsons Disease three years later. Read more from the original source: Muhammad Ali in hospital with pneumonia … Continue reading

LIVES CHANGED: Former Barraba woman Cassie Batten, with partner Rhett Wallace and son Cooper, 3, in Tamworth for last months medical marijuana symposium. Ms Batten was last week told she will not be charged for administering medical cannabis to her sick child. Photo: Barry Smith A FORMER Barraba woman has struck a blow in her fight to keep her son alive through the use of medical marijuana. Cassie Batten, who now lives in Melbourne with partner Rhett Wallace and their children, was thrust into the national spotlight in July when police raided their home and confiscated a cache of cannabis oil. The oil was being used to treat their son Cooper, 3, who contracted bacterial meningitis at four weeks old, leaving him with severe brain damage, cerebral abscesses, epilepsy and cerebral palsy. In desperation, the family began administering cannabis oil to treat Cooper late last year. The results were stunning. An EEG test before cannabis oil treatment showed Cooper having 57 seizures in 60 minutes. Visit link: A win for little Coopers parents … Continue reading

Hunt after cure for MS disease

Posted: Published on December 21st, 2014

BRUCE MERCER/FAIRFAX NZ HOPE: Andrew Hunt, pictured with his wife Marie and children Jesse and Samuel faces limited time with his family unless a new form of stem cell treatment can reverse his deterioration from multiple sclerosis. Andrew Hunt is betting his life on a high-risk, brutal and unproven medical treatment on the other side of the world, in a bid to beat the disease slowly killing him. The Cambridge-based anaesthetic technician was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis eight years ago. The news he had the disease, which attacks the nervous system in people's bodies, came just two weeks after Hunt asked his girlfriend Marie for her hand in marriage. They have since tied the knot. Since then, she has helplessly watched her husband daily endure the characteristic symptoms of the disease: Fatigue, leg spasms, loss of balance, muscle weakness and tightening, and severe heat intolerance. As is common for those who suffer from multiple sclerosis, Hunt is getting progressively worse. In mid-September, the disease forced him to resign from his job as an anaesthetic technician at Southern Cross Hospital. His wife and sons - two-year-old Jesse and four-month-old Samuel - have been left with little hope of a stable future … Continue reading

New Low Testosterone Therapy Study Shows Male Hormone Testosterone May Contribute To Colon Cancer Reports Wright …

Posted: Published on December 21st, 2014

Columbus, OH (PRWEB) December 21, 2014 As testosterone therapy lawsuit filings on behalf of men alleging heart attacks, stroke and blood clots from using testosterone products such as AndroGel and Androderm, continue to increase, a new study shows that the male hormone testosterone may increase the risk of men developing colon cancer. In a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in November, lead researcher, James Amos-Landgraf examined a group of male rats with naturally occurring colon cancer. Dr. Amos-Landgraf, an assistant professor of veterinary pathobiology at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine, then removed testosterone from the rats and the colon cancer rates drastically decreased. When he placed the testosterone back into the rats, the colon cancer rates returned to normal. Dr. Amos-Landgraf, in a news release, said,by showing that removing testosterone from rats leads to a drastic decrease in colon cancer susceptibility, it appears that male hormones may actually contribute to colon tumor growth rather than female hormones being protective. Dr. Amos-Landgraf added that post-menopausal women are more susceptible to colon cancer due to the increase of their testosterone levels. Female hormones, such as estrogen, which help to protect against diseases, decreases … Continue reading
