Gemiini System uses video to help autistic children communicate

Posted: Published on December 24th, 2014

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- As the clinical director of the California Autism Center and Learning Group in Fresno, Dr. Amanda Adams looks for promising ways to treat children with the disorder. Speech therapy is one of the center's services but the therapists could soon get help with a new system of videos, created by a mother of seven Laura Kasbar. "My twins were diagnosed with autism and they did not respond to therapy," said Laura Kasbar, founder of Gemiini System. Desperate to find a treatment for her children, Kasbar used a method called discreet video modeling, to create the Gemiini System. The secret is in the simplicity of showing words and associations allowing autistic children to focus on learning. Kasbar traveled from her headquarters in Spokane Washington to talk to Action news about the program. "Gemiini brings the child out of themselves and actually appears to be restructuring the neurology in their brain," said Kasbar. Laura showed an example of how her once non-verbal son began to communicate. Prior to the video program her son, Max, was unresponsive when his name was called. After the program, Max is seen clearly communicating and interacting with others. Dr. Adams supports the Gemiini … Continue reading

Obstacles

Access to medical care for autism may expand in multiple ways during the new year in New Mexico. Health care advocates are simultaneously celebrating the developments while preparing for the next hurdle. On Jan. 1, a law goes into effect requiring state health care programs to cover diagnoses and treatment for autism. The change continues a recent trend in New Mexico expanding health coverage of the neurological disorder, which impacts social and behavioral development. Five years ago, state lawmakers passed a bill that similarly expanded autism coverage for private insurers. And a planned spike in Medicaid practices here promises to provide similar treatment for more patients. I think theres been an incredible amount of change thats occurred, says Santa Fe provider Zoe Migel, who serves as executive director of Bright Futures: Autism and Early Intervention. But whether there are enough providers actually available to grant new coverage is another story. Migel and several others say this is especially an issue in remote, rural areas where health care is harder to come by. If you live in Albuquerque or Las Cruces, your chances of getting good services [are] much better, she says. Even though there are mandates, the problem remains as … Continue reading

'July effect' does not impact stroke outcomes, according to new study

St. Michael's Hospital IMAGE:'We found there was no higher rate of deaths after 30 or 90 days, no poorer greater rates of disability or loss of independence and no evidence of a July... view more Credit: St. Michael's Hospital TORONTO, Dec. 23, 2014 - Patients with strokes caused by blood clots -known as acute ischemic strokes- who were admitted in July had similar outcomes compared to patients admitted any other month, according to a new study. The findings challenge concerns about the possibility of lower quality of care and the potential risk of poorer outcomes in teaching hospitals when new medical residents start each July - sometimes called the "July effect." The possibility of a July effect is more relevant and concerning for time-sensitive conditions, such as stroke, since urgency and expert management is required for treatment. Teaching hospitals treat more than half of strokes, a leading cause of death and disability worldwide, but little research has been done to verify whether there is a July effect in stroke care and patient outcomes at teaching hospitals. "We found there was no higher rate of deaths after 30 or 90 days, no poorer greater rates of disability or loss of independence … Continue reading

Prognosis for Parkinson's: Number of Treatment Options on the Market

Parkinson's Disease can have debilitating effects when it comes to walking and coordination. Jennifer Gruenberg hasn't had those effects, but she has started feeling some of the invisible symptoms, including sleep problems and mood disorders. "Right now, Parkinson's is sort of eating up my day, every day because I don't feel good when it comes time to take my next pill," said Gruenberg. "In the period when the pill is wearing off, my head feels foggy. My body is achy and I know that I've taken another pill but it could take 45 minutes to an hour to kick in." That's one of the big problems of the medications that are on the market. A main area of clinical trials and study is looking at the best medications. "There's a variety of drug studies looking at both motor symptom control as well as non-motor symptoms. Many of these are looking at new formulations or combinations of drugs that we already use to see if we can get a little bit of incremental benefit. But there are some exciting advances where we're looking at brand new approaches to trying to slow the progression of the disease," said University of Rochester Medical … Continue reading
