Sherley, director of the Adult Stem Cell Technology Center, LLC (ASCTC) focused attention on an often overlooked and under appreciated unique property of adult tissue stem cells. Lansdowne author raises awareness about sickle cell disease

Dominique Friend doesn't look like she's sick. But the Lansdowne resident often deals with bouts of pain so severe she ends up in the hospital for weeks. Friend, 44, was born with sickle cell disease, an inherited blood disorder that affects an estimated 90,000 to 100,000 in the U.S., according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention information. Her autobiography "Sickle" was released by Tate Publishing on Dec. 9 in a second edition, after she self-published the book in 2009. In the book, she tells of her struggle with the debilitating disease. Friend said she shared her personal account to raise awareness about the disease, which predominantly affects African-Americans. It is also found in those of Hispanic and Mediterranean descent, according to CDC information. Friend said for as long as she can recall, she has dealt with painful episodes that are characteristic of sickle cell disease. Pain develops when sickle-shaped red blood cells, that should be round like a doughnut, block the blood flow to the chest, joints and other parts of the body, Friend explained. White Southerners Likely To Have More Black DNA Than Whites Elsewhere In The US: Study

At least six million Americans who identify themselves as white have more "black" DNA than white people in other parts of the United States, according to a recent study published in the American Journal of Human Genetics. Several states, which have been the focal points of racial tensions in the U.S. over the years, are made up of self-described white people whose ancestors are black, the study claims. Researchers reportedly examined the genetic records of 145,000 people who submitted saliva samples -- where DNA sequence variations are found -- to 23andMe, a California-based private company that provides ancestry-related genetic reports. From the data, researchers determined that people especially from the South have at least 1 percent of African ancestry. The study also found that states with the highest levels of African ancestry, such as South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, are not those with the highest proportions of African Americans. European Americans with African ancestry comprise as much as 12 percent of European Americans from Louisiana and South Carolina and about 1 in 10 individuals in other parts of the South, according to the study. The judge presiding over a decades-old death penalty case where DNA has become a point of contention between both sides has issued a written order that strikes down an argument made by the defense against DNA collection. On Dec. 5, attorneys for Ian Lightbourne, 55, filed into court arguing that the state's request to take a new DNA sample from their client should be thrown out because the trial court, which is being asked to rule on the DNA matter, no longer has jurisdiction over the case. Therefore, the defense argued, Circuit Judge Robert Hodges has no authority to allow for the DNA collection. During the hearing, the defense presented legal precedent that stated when defendants are sentenced to a life prison term the trial court no longer has jurisdiction because the sentence is an indeterminate amount of time. Stakeholders in the field of industrial biotechnology, including representatives of the medical and pharmaceutical industries, the agricultural realm and other industries have joined together to form a new ASTM International technical committee. Following an organizational meeting on April 14, Committee E62 on Industrial Biotechnology was approved by the ASTM board of directors in June 2014. The Biotechnology Industry Organization defines industrial biotechnology as technology based on biology biotechnology harnesses cellular and biomolecular processes to develop technologies and products that help improve our lives and the health of our planet. Planning for Committee E62 began after a series of meetings between ASTM and the Society of Chemical Manufacturers and Affiliates in early 2013. Larry Sloan, president and CEO of SOCMA, believes that standards to be developed by E62 will play an important role in establishing a more consistent foundation on which to base industry-related incentives and regulations. Without industrial biotechnology standards, we cannot have good policy and without good policy, we cannot have investment, says Sloan.
