(AP Photo/Manu Fernandez) more > By Joseph Wilson - Associated Press - Monday, November 10, 2014 BARCELONA, Spain Rafael Nadals doctor says the 14-time Grand Slam winner will receive stem cell treatment on his ailing back. Angel Ruiz-Cotorro told The Associated Press by phone on Monday that we are going to put cells in a joint in his spine next week in Barcelona. The Spanish tennis star was already sidelined for the rest of the season after having his appendix removed last week. Ruiz-Cotorro, who has worked as a doctor for Nadal for the past 14 years, said Nadals back pain is typical of tennis players and that the treatment is meant to help repair his cartilage and is similar to stem cell treatment Nadal received on his knee last year. He said Nadal is expected to return to training in early December. Several NFL players and baseball players have received stem cell treatment. Nadals fellow Spaniard Pau Gasol, center of the Chicago Bulls, received stem cell treatment on his knee in 2013. Nadal experienced severe … Continue reading

MOODY: Emerald Coast Autism Center strives to reach kids, support families

Posted: Published on November 10th, 2014

According to recent statistics, autism now affects one out of every 68 children, and is more than four times more likely to present in boys than in girls. A bio-neurological development disability, autism often appears in children before their third birthday, and it impacts the development of the brain responsible for social interaction, communications skills, and cognitive functions. Roughly 40 percent of children on the autism spectrum are non-verbal. While the causes of and treatments for autism is hotly and passionately debated, everyone, researchers, doctors, and parents, agree that early intervention is the key to successful treatment. In 2009, The Emerald Coast Autism Center opened in Valparaiso providing cutting edge research-based education and therapy for five children. Today, ECAC works with 68 children and their families to provide year round private school and intensive therapy. With a motto of Reaching Kids, Supporting Families, ECAC utilizes Applied Behavior Analysis therapy for their students and provides an extensive support network for families. The goal of ECACs therapy is to help each child reach his or her potential by identifying, implementing, and evaluating the ways each student learns best. The primary goals of ABA therapy include increasing language skills, socialization, and functional behaviors. … Continue reading

Man Dies From Stroke Reportedly Brought On By Chiropractic Treatment

Posted: Published on November 10th, 2014

A routine trip to the chiropractor may have caused a 30-year-old mans death. Jeremy Youngblood, of Ada, Oklahoma, was reportedly a healthy young man before he visited his chiropractor. Jeremy died of acute cerebellar infarction due to manipulation of the neck. Coroners say it was brought on by the visit to the chiropractor, reports FOX 31. The majority of the strokes happen in the vertebral arteries in the back, Dr. Bill Kinsinger, President of the Oklahoma Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision said. The stress on that artery at that segment where it makes that turn against thebone is most susceptible to stroke. Kinsinger is an outspoken critic of chiropractic therapy. He said that when a chiropractor adjusts your neck, a tear can be caused in the artery. Then, when your body tries to fix it by creating a clot, the clot can break off and travel until the vessels become too small. That action can cause a stroke to occur. Its not that these strokes are happening everyday; theyre not, Kinsinger said. But they are happening. And theyre usually happening to young, otherwise healthy people who should have never been injured for benefit of nothing. Jeremys mother, Linda Youngblood, … Continue reading

She didn't think much of it until she noticed a constant tremor in her thigh as well. At first, doctors thought she had sciatica. But it turned out the Asheville woman was experiencing the first signs of Parkinson's disease. "It just got worse," said Morgan, 59, who was forced to retire from her job as a pharmacist in September. "And this year, I started having gait and balance problems. I started falling," she said. "And my speech is affected too." On Nov. 15, Morgan will be recognized as a "local hero" for her contributions to the Parkinson's community at a Victory Summit in Greenville, South Carolina. The Carolina Spine & Neurosurgery Center of Mission Health in Asheville is one of the sponsors. The free event for people with Parkinson's as well as their families and care partners brings together experts to share the latest on research and treatments along with practical tools for living with the disease. Chemical discovery could ease Parkinsons disease patients

Posted: Published on November 10th, 2014

Though new University of Minnesota research could break ground on treatment for Parkinsons disease, Jackie Christensen, who was diagnosed with the illness 18 years ago, said she has a hard time imagining a fix for her daily struggles. Theres not a short answer, said Christensen, who is also the state of Minnesotas director for the Parkinsons Action Network. I think its hard to find a cure because we dont know what causes it in most cases. But Liqiang Chen, assistant professor at the Universitys Center for Drug Design, said he and his team of chemists have discovered powerful inhibitors that may be able to stop one of the diseases leading contributors. The results of their work were published in the September Journal of Medicinal Chemistry. Each year, U.S. doctors diagnosebetween 50,000 and 60,000 people with Parkinsons in addition to the countrys existing 1 million cases. Chen said because the disease stems from the nervous system, its necessary for treatments to cross the barrier between the brain and the circulatory system but he said only about 2 percent of all FDA-approved drugs do so. In order to be effective, Chen said, the pill needs to cross the blood-brain barrier. A drug … Continue reading

Conned out of $22,000 by FB 'lover'

Posted: Published on November 10th, 2014

Not only was her dream to marry the man she loved crushed, but all of Ms Suzannie's (not her real name) savings vanished as well, leaving her in debt by as much as $19,000. All this because the 44-year-old single mother of three fell for the sweet nothings of her Facebook "lover". Ms Suzannie trusted her "lover", who called himself Troy Williams, so much that she gave money and gifts totalling $22,000, of which $3,000 was from her savings, while the rest of the amount was borrowed. Her "lover" then vanished suddenly, leaving the photocopy-machine operator to bear the consequences. According to Ms Suzannie, her misfortune began when Williams asked to be her friend on Facebook in April, claiming to be a United States soldier aged 42. They started to chat often on Facebook, and he frequently lavished her with love poems and called her "wife". A month after that, Williams began asking Ms Suzannie for money on the pretence that he needed to undergo treatment at a hospital in India after injuries sustained during his deployment in Syria. "Each time I said I didn't have money, he asked me to borrow from my friend. "I wanted to help him … Continue reading
