Anatomy Of A Flawed Election

Posted: Published on November 9th, 2014

At 4 a.m. on Election Day, a bleary-eyed group of poll workers walked into the Hartford town and city clerk's office to check the last of more than 1,200 absentee voters off the voter registration lists. The task was routine; the time and day troublesome. The job, crucial to ensuring that absentee voters couldn't show up Tuesday at city polling places and vote again, should have been mostly finished days earlier, city and state officials said. The last-minute scramble, completed less than an hour before polls were to open, was one in a series of lapses that led to some polling places not having registration lists when voting was scheduled to begin at 6 a.m. As a result of the failure, voters were turned away, a judge ordered the extension of hours at two polling places and the state's chief election official filed a complaint with the State Elections Enforcement Commission. Interviews with poll workers, city employees, volunteers and state officials, as well as a review of internal emails obtained by The Courant, provide some insight into what went wrong: Democratic Registrar Olga Vazquez knew Hartford was behind schedule in printing the voter lists six days before Election Day and … Continue reading

And so, I feel like I'm kind of a lost cause already, but if he's ever diagnosed, I wanna know that I've done everything I can to find a cure for him." Said Brittainy Silvey, suffers from Ulcerative Colitis. The group is just over the half way mark to their December goal of $50,000. FDA Clears ISCO's Parthenogenetic Stem Cells For Investigational Clinical Use

Posted: Published on November 9th, 2014

By Cyndi Root International Stem Cell Corporation is now approved to manufacture human parthenogenetic stem cells. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cleared the cells for investigational clinical use. The company announced the approval in a press release, stating that it improves its chance for approval of its Parkinsons disease treatment and provides an avenue for using the cells in other indications such as stroke or traumatic brain injury. Dr. Ruslan Semechkin, ISCO's Chief Scientific Officer, said, "Many stem cell lines can never be used to develop commercial therapeutic products because they don't meet the FDA's ethical and quality standards. With this clearance from the FDA, the Company has removed any uncertainty in the potential clinical use of human parthenogenetic stem cells." FDA Action Like all manufacturing to FDA standards, stem cells must be produced in good manufacturing practice (GMP) conditions. The cells must be grown under repeatable conditions and be identical, so that patients receive standardized stem cell therapy. In addition, the federal agency seeks to reduce the risk of an infectious disease. ISCO provided the FDA assurances relating to the original egg donor's risk of infectious diseases, the testing of the master cell bank, and the genetic stability … Continue reading
