Drawing Basics: Mixed Bag of Anatomy Inspiration

Posted: Published on October 31st, 2014

Hey fellow artists! Drawing anatomy seems overwhelming to me sometimes, but if I focus on strategies for HOW to learn it, it starts to seem doable. Here are a few tips I learned from a recent article written by Dan Gheno in Drawing magazine: -Don't try to absorb everything at once. Start with learning where the muscles attach to the bones. That makes it easier to learn the relationship of a particular bone to a particular muscle. After all, it is the muscles that move bones. Specific bones move when specific muscles contract. For me, another good tool for me is a physical therapy book The Anatomy of Movement, by Blandine Calais-Germain. It discusses both muscles and bones as they relate to movement, and is used by my physical therapist (and now me!). It's helpful to keep motion in mind when drawing the figure because you can make the drawing more dynamic if you incorporate hints of motion as opposed to something completely still. Jason Espey went a different route when drawing figures and making a body drawing by sketching the back torso of a live model. Done in vine charcoal, he finished this in less than an hour and … Continue reading

Mechanism that allows differentiated cell to reactivate as a stem cell revealed

Posted: Published on October 31st, 2014

One kind of stem cell, those referred to as 'facultative', form part -- together with other cells -- of tissues and organs. There is apparently nothing that differentiates these cells from the others. However, they have a very special characteristic, namely they retain the capacity to become stem cells again. This phenomenon is something that happens in the liver, an organ that hosts cells that stimulate tissue growth, thus allowing the regeneration of the organ in the case of a transplant. Knowledge of the underlying mechanism that allows these cells to retain this capacity is a key issue in regenerative medicine. Headed by Jordi Casanova, research professor at the Instituto de Biologa Molecular de Barcelona (IBMB) of the CSIC and at IRB Barcelona, and by Xavier Franch-Marro, CSIC tenured scientist at the Instituto de Biologa Evolutiva (CSIC-UPF), a study published in the journal Cell Reports reveals a mechanism that could explain this capacity. Working with larval tracheal cells of Drosophila melanogaster, these authors report that the key feature of these cells is that they have not entered the endocycle, a modified cell cycle through which a cell reproduces its genome several times without dividing. "The function of endocycle in living … Continue reading

Lab-grown stem cell trial gets green light

Posted: Published on October 31st, 2014

Irelands first human stem cell trial using lab-grown cells is due to get underway in Galway in the new year following approval from the medicines watchdog. The trial will involve extracting adult mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) from the bone marrow of patients with a condition known as critical limb ischemia (CLI) a severe blockage of the arteries resulting in marked reduction in blood flow to the extremities. Reduction in blood flow to the legs puts patients at risk of gangrene, ulceration, and amputation, and the Galway trial will look at the use of MSCs to grow new stems cells which will then be injected back into the patients leg with the hope of growing new blood cells and improving circulation. The harvested stem cells will be grown to much greater quantities in a highly specialised lab before being injected back into the patients leg. Tim OBrien, director of the Galway-based Regenerative Medicine Institute, said their research was focused on whether MSC therapy could improve blood flow to the legs in patients with CLI a condition common in diabetics and therefore avoid the need for amputation. The trial is aimed predominantly at testing the safety and feasibility of what is very … Continue reading
