New Details Emerge On Autism Treatment Mandate

Posted: Published on September 27th, 2014

Federal officials are taking steps to clarify new requirements surrounding Medicaid coverage of autism treatments. Over the summer, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services issued a bulletin to states indicating that Medicaid programs across the country must provide medically necessary diagnostic and treatment services to beneficiaries with autism under age 21. Now, the agency is providing new details about the mandate. In a frequently asked questions document released this week, CMS emphasized that the directive does not specifically require state Medicaid programs to cover applied behavior analysis. Rather, that is one of several offerings that states can choose to provide in order to fulfill their obligations to those on the spectrum. CMS is not endorsing or requiring any particular treatment modality for ASD. State Medicaid agencies are responsible for determining what services are medically necessary for eligible individuals, federal officials indicated. Already at least one state has acted in response to this summers bulletin. California officials said earlier this month that they would begin covering ABA and other services for young people on the spectrum. Medicaid officials indicated it could take time, however, for all states to review their current offerings and institute any necessary changes. At this point, … Continue reading

Ft. Lauderdale Personal Injury Law Firm Ginnis & Krathen, P.A. Highlights Why Experience is Necessary for Success in …

Boca Raton, Florida (PRWEB) September 26, 2014 All too often, the attorneys at Ft. Lauderdale-based personal injury law firm Ginnis & Krathen, P.A. see cases where slip and falls, product liability, premises liability and traffic accidents lead to neck and spinal injuries. Unfortunately, this almost always leads to serious damage because the neck and spine are connected to the central nervous system. Clients who have spinal injuries due to slip and fall or other accidents often need multiple surgeries and experience ongoing pain and difficulties, explains Eric Ginnis, founding partner of Ginnis & Krathen. "September is National Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month, so this is the perfect time to educate the public on why experience is necessary for handling these types of personal injury cases since it's outcome can affect clients and their families for the rest of their lives." Eric has ample experience in personal injury law as well as an in-depth understanding of the medical issues involved in spinal injury cases. His pre-med studies as an undergrad focused on neurophysiology, or the functioning of the nervous system. As a result, Ginnis & Krathen has an advantage when it comes to the complexities of these particular cases involving a … Continue reading

Jake's Riders push off Sunday

Posted: Published on September 27th, 2014

The Bachmann-Strauss Dystonia and Parkinson Foundation will hold its seventh Annual Jake's Ride for Dystonia Research Sunday, Sept. 28. The community-wide bike tour attracts more than 1,000 bikers or walkers and 100 volunteers annually and features live entertainment, a silent auction, raffle prizes, food, and arts and crafts activities for children. Jake's Ride organizers have set of goal of raising $400,000 this year for dystonia research. The event has raised more than $1.7 million in six years, funding 21 research grants for dystonia and three movement disorder fellowships. Jake's Ride is named for Jake Silverman, a 17-year old township resident who was diagnosed with early onset childhood dystonia in 2008. Closely related to Parkinson's disease, dystonia, a neurological movement disorder that causes uncontrollable and painful spasms, affects at least 500,000 in North America, one-third of whom are children. The year he was diagnosed with dystonia, Jake underwent Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) treatment at Massachusetts General Hospital. Six years after surgery, Jake is entering college and, while he has made significant progress, his dystonia is not cured. The Bachman-Strauss Dystonia and Parkinson Foundation, along with the Silverman family, and a Jake's Ride committee, launched the first Jake's Ride for Dystonia Research … Continue reading

Five years after brain injury, San Jose family navigates a life they never imagined

Posted: Published on September 27th, 2014

SAN JOSE -- As Jessica Huse struggled to hold her head up, her mother brushed back her hair and gently kissed her on the forehead. "Life happens," Lisa Huse said quietly as she straightened Jessica's neck more comfortably into a brace attached to her wheelchair And life goes on, even when it's not the one you had envisioned. On Aug. 2, 2009, then 18-year-old Jessica, just a couple weeks away from going off to college, was broadsided on Blossom Hill Road while driving to Sunday morning church services. The recent Valley Christian graduate suffered a traumatic brain injury and wasn't expected to survive. A bulletin board with the family motto, "Whatever It Takes" is kept near Jessica Huse, 23, for inspiration at the family home in San Jose, Calif., on Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2014. Jessica suffered a traumatic brain injury that has confined her to a wheelchair following a car accident in August of 2009. The family is preparing for a charity run this weekend that will raise money for Jessica's ongoing medical care which costs around $150,000 a year.
