Health Beat: Stroke in young adults

Posted: Published on September 26th, 2014

ATLANTA - At just age 18, Jake suffered a stroke. The injury to his brain was devastating to Jake and his mother. "He had this handicap and the way that I was treating him, all I was doing was handicapping him even more," said Ann Nicolopulos, Jake's mother. The four-year long road to recovery hasn't been easy. "Jake is able to walk independently. It's a little limp, but it's OK," Nicolopulos said. "He drives and he's definitely left-hand dominate now. The right arm is more of an assist. His speech, that's definitely a difficulty." Now at 22, Jake is a college student. Medical experts say successful stroke recovery has challenges, starting with a lack of awareness that stroke does happen in the young. Doctors say early diagnosis is crucial. In people of all ages, an unusual headache, nausea and vomiting and facial or arm weakness are signs of stroke. "Getting them to early access to stroke care, and then getting them early treatment for rehabilitation," said Dr. Payal Fadia, medical director of Shepherd Pathways. Doctors also advise young stroke victims to return to an active lifestyle and adopt a well-balanced diet to avoid the risk of a repeat stroke. Jake … Continue reading

LA VERNE, Calif.- Ataxia is a group of rare degenerative neurological disorders that is often fatal. About 150,000 people in the U.S. are affected by Ataxia, which is a lack of muscle coordination. Fifteen-year-old Moira Greenway is the eldest daughter of former teen star Bunny Paras and radio host Mo Twister. She has been suffering from Friedreichs Ataxia for almost eight years now. She was around 7, like 6 or 7 years-old, Paras said. We saw that she was getting wobbly, slurry speech, and more clumsy Because its progressive, we saw talagang happening na every year it got worse and worse and worse. Moira was an active kid, but Ataxia has limited her way of life. I was able to do kickball and other little games that we did with other classmates. But right now I cannot do anything," Greenway said. Its so hard to think are you going to lose your child? Paras said. Is she gonna last how many years? Hows the progression gonna be? Friedreichs Ataxia in children has a more rapid progression and is often associated with vision impairment, scoliosis, diabetes, and serious heart problems. Humble turmeric may treat neurological disorders

Posted: Published on September 26th, 2014

A bioactive compound found in turmeric promotes stem cell proliferation and differentiation in the brain, reveals new research. The findings suggest that aromatic (ar-) turmerone could be a future drug candidate for treating neurological disorders such as stroke and Alzheimer's disease. While several substances have been described to promote stem cell proliferation in the brain, fewer drugs additionally promote the differentiation of stem cells into neurons which constitutes a major goal in regenerative medicine. "Our findings on aromatic turmerone take us one step closer to achieving this goal," said lead study author Adele Rueger from the Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine in Julich, Germany. The study looked at the effects of aromatic (ar-) turmerone on endogenous neutral stem cells (NSC), the stem cells found within adult brains. To test the effects of ar-turmerone on NSC, researchers injected adult rats with ar-turmerone. They found that the subventricular zone (SVZ) and the hippocampus expanded in the brains of rats injected with ar-turmerone. "The SVZ and hippocampus are the two sites in adult mammalian brains where neurogenesis, the growth of neurons, is known to occur," Rueger explained. Ar-turmerone is the lesser-studied of two major bioactive compounds found in turmeric. The other compound is … Continue reading

retinitis pigmentosa (pathology) — Encyclopedia Britannica

Posted: Published on September 26th, 2014

retinitis pigmentosa, group of hereditary eye diseases in which progressive degeneration of the retina leads to severe impairment of vision. In the usual course of disease, the light-sensitive structures called rodswhich are the visual receptors used in dim lightare destroyed early on, causing night blindness in youth. Over time, further atrophy of the retina and changes in the layer of supporting cells known as the pigment epithelium occur. Commonly, the field of vision becomes constricted until the affected person sees objects as if looking through a tunnel. In most cases, the course of disease is very slow, and progression to total blindness is uncommon. There are several hereditary patterns for retinitis pigmentosa, and multiple genetic defects responsible for the various forms of disease have been isolated. Treatment is largely supportive and aimed at optimizing remaining vision. There are several types of therapy under development for the treatment of retinitis pigmentosa. Among the most promising of these therapies are retinal implants, which have demonstrated some ability to restore perception of light and dark in several blind patients. A retinal implant consists of an electrode implanted at the back of the eye that receives signals from a transmitter and camera embedded in a … Continue reading

Dog Branded With Profanity Gets Cosmetic Surgery

Posted: Published on September 26th, 2014

A pit-bull puppy named Felicity that was branded with the "f-word" by chemical burns had cosmetic surgery in Kentucky on Thursday to mask the scar. Felicity was found last month tied to a fence in Lexington with the scar on her side. She was taken in by the Lexington Humane Society, who said that they wanted to perform the surgery before sending her to a new home. Liz Ubelhor, the veterinarian who performed the procedure, said the people who burned her likely used a chemical paste or liquid, the Associated Press reports. (Image credit: Lexington Humane Society) Lexington Humane Society development manager Ashley Hammond told WKYT, "We think doing plastic surgery on her will make her a little more adoptable and we don't want people to make judgments on her based on her appearance." Hundreds of dollars were donated to help the Humane Society pay for Felicity's procedure. The Lexington Humane Society is offering a $3,500 reward for information on who burned Felicity. Despite tips Animal Control has received, no arrests have been made, WKYT reports. Animal control has asked that anyone with information on what happened to Felicity to contact them at 859-255-9033 ext. 229. Here is the original … Continue reading
