Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise MADISON, Wis. A multidisciplinary team at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Morgridge Institute for Research is creating a faster, more affordable way to screen for neural toxins, helping flag chemicals that may harm human development. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced today that the UW-Madison and Morgridge team is among 11 universities receiving support to continue the promising work as part of the Tissue Chip for Drug Screening program. The team will receive approximately $7 million over the three-year project. The next phase of the NIH program aims to improve ways of predicting drug safety and effectiveness. Researchers will collaborate to refine existing 3-D human tissue chips and combine them into an integrated system that can mimic the complex functions of the human body. "We aim to get more treatments to more patients more efficiently," says Christopher P. Austin, director of the NIHs National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS). "That is exactly why we are supporting the development of human tissue chip technology, which could be revolutionary in providing a faster, more cost-effective way of predicting the failure or success of drugs prior to investing in human clinical trials." … Continue reading

Bun in the oven for MKR duo

The West Australian Last year's My Kitchen Rules winners Dan and Steph Mulheron have something else celebrate, with news they are expecting their first child. The Queensland couple have spoken publicly about their struggles to conceive and pledged they would spend their $250,000 prize money on IVF treatments. Just over a year later and the cooks' dream has come true, with Steph recently reaching the 12-week milestone of her pregnancy. A friend told New Idea the pair were over the moon at the prospect of becoming parents. "They've been trying for ages and now they're finally pregnant and they're so happy," the pal said. "Everyone is really happy about it. They've been dreaming of this for a long time and it's amazing that it's become a reality." The couple tried to conceive naturally for five years before finding out Steph's fallopian tubes were blocked. They later saved $15,000 for their first IVF treatment, only for it to fail. "It's been an emotional, physical and financial rollercoaster," the 32-year-old previously told the magazine. "Anyone who's been through gruelling IVF treatment will understand." The couple's prize money helped them pay off their loans from their first round of fertility treatments and set … Continue reading

Environment plays bigger role than genetics in food allergic disease

Posted: Published on September 23rd, 2014

Researchers have found that environment has a much stronger role than genetics in eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), a severe, often painful food allergy that renders children unable to eat a wide variety of foods. Eosinophils are normal cellular components of the blood, but when the body produces too many eosinophils they can cause a variety of eosinophilic disorders. These are disorders involving chronic inflammation and resulting tissue damage, often in the gastrointestinal system. In an international collaboration involving multiple institutions, researchers at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center quantified the risk associated with genes and environment on familial clustering of EoE. The researchers constructed and examined patient family pedigrees of patients with EoE and their first-degree relatives (nuclear family analysis) and of patients with EoE and their identical or fraternal twin/triplets (twin analysis). Using these two distinct analyses, they determined that 2.4% of siblings and 1.8% of first-degree relatives of patients with EoE also had EoE. The researchers also found that brothers, fathers, and males were more likely to have EoE than sisters, mothers, or females. Twins had 20-40% risk of EoE depending upon whether they were identical or fraternal. "The power of this study is the twin analysis," says Eileen Alexander, … Continue reading
