Miscommunication leads to late start for chemistry exam

Posted: Published on September 22nd, 2014

Chemistry 1307 students were given an exam 50 minutes late 7 p.m. Wednesday when the testing location was changed from the Human Sciences building to the Biology building and then to the Chemistry building. The original room in the Human Sciences building that was scheduled as the testing location had a maximum capacity of 200 students, while about 300 students were supposed to take the exam. The size of the rooms was an issue not all instructors were made aware of prior to the exam, Joachim Weber, associate professor and interim chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, said. The instructors were informed of the primary examination room assignment for their section, but they were not made aware that some of these rooms were smaller than the actual class size and that additional rooms had been assigned for students in the section, he said. While most of the sections were able to resolve the matter quickly, he said one section was moved to two other locations before the test was administered because of missing key cards for the original extra rooms. This inconveniences me, Nick Schlachter, a sophomore wildlife biology major from Dallas, said. Im trying to get out … Continue reading

BioKidz: the Children of the Stem Cell Revolution to go Global

Posted: Published on September 22nd, 2014

(PRWEB UK) 22 September 2014 BioKidz is a simple concept which aims to engage children in the importance of stem cell medicine. Aimed at an audience of 4-9 year olds, the company now aims to use it in the 21 countries in which it operates. BioEden has been invited to speak with parents and teachers later this month, as the BioKidz site aims to be a good source of scientific information for primary school teachers. The BioEden proposition is very simple one: harvest the stem cells from a naturally shed baby tooth, store the viable cells for future therapeutic use, and guarantee that the cells will be available when needed. As stem cell medicine is now becoming commonplace, it is important that there is a stem cell match when needed. The easiest way to do this is by harvesting and storing one's own cells, and there is no easier way than from naturally shed teeth. The company admits that they could be putting the ordinary tooth fairy out of business, but they hasten to add that BioKidz have their own hero in the form of a Super Tooth Fairy who works within their own stem cell laboratories. Children can meet … Continue reading

Cardiology Group Withdraws ‘Choosing Wisely’ Recommendation

Posted: Published on September 22nd, 2014

In the end it wasnt wisdom for the ages. The American College of Cardiologysaidtoday that it was withdrawing one of its five recommendations inthe Choosing Wisely campaign. In 2012 the ACC recommended that heart attack patients should have only their culprit artery unblocked. It said that patients and caregivers should question whether complete revascularization of all nonculprit lesions in heart attack patients should be performed. The original recommendation was based on non-randomized studies suggesting that treating all significantly blocked vessels in heart attack patients could be harmful. However, the ACC now states, over the last two years, new science has emerged showing potential improvements for some patients in their overall outcomes as a result of complete revascularization. Two recent randomized controlled trials have altered the field. The 2013PRAMItrial and last monthsCvLPRITtrial offered evidence that stenting all arteries with large blockages improved the outcome of heart attack patients. But the studies, the ACC states, left many openquestions about the exact timing of the procedures; whether certain patients benefit versus others; whether FFR might guide decisions; and the role of patient complexity and hemodynamic stability. Science is not static but rather constantly evolving, said ACC President Patrick T. OGara, in a press release. … Continue reading
