He greets you with a cheery smile and a friendly handshake. He makes eye contact with you during conversation. He treads carefully but confidently, sans walking cane. But you will notice his sidekick: a young German Shepherd guide dog named Dazzler. Willis, at 40 years old, has gradually lost his vision to retinitis pigmentosa since early childhood. He said his guide dog has been a big factor in creating a normal life for him, increasing his sense of safety and freedom, and expanding social opportunities. Disheartened by the shortage of guide dogs available for visually impaired individuals in the United States, he was inspired to take matters into his own hands. In 2011, he founded Independence Guide Dogs (IGD), a nonprofit organization based at his home near Georgetown, to help train guide dogs for blind and visually impaired individuals. IGD is run predominantly by a group of 30 volunteers, Willis included, as well as two certified guide-dog trainers and a few contractors. Their mission, he said, is to increase independence for individuals … Continue reading

Five Australian medical stories everyone should know

The history of Australian medical research is an unabashed good news story: its led to many astounding yet common medical treatments and to better understanding of disease. In fact, as a society we benefit every single day from this innovation and growth in human knowledge. Yet so many of the stories behind the science remain hidden: we know so little about how we came to know what we know. The first is about a young psychiatrist from Melbourne who had no research training whatsoever John Cade. Cade was particularly interested in bipolar disorder. He was convinced that the horrendous manic phase, where the person goes completely mad, must have been due to some toxin and he thought it would be secreted in the urine, particularly uric acid. He was completely wrong. But his hypothesis led Cade to inject the urine from manic patients into guinea pigs. Because he knew lithium salts could help dissolve the uric acid crystals, Cade gave these salts to the guinea pigs. … Continue reading

Biotech Corp Eyes 60 Per Cent Investment Contribution From Industrial Biotechnology Sector

Posted: Published on June 17th, 2014

KUALA LUMPUR, June 17 (Bernama) -- Malaysian Biotechnology Corporation Sdn Bhd (BioTech Corp) plans to secure up to 60 per cent investment contribution from the industrial biotecnology sector by year-end, Chief Operating Officer Razwin Sulairee Hasnan Termizi said. Earlier in May, the company stated its target of bringing in a total of RM5 billion investment into the country this year. He said the industrial biotechnology sector is picking up momentum as industry players have seen the opportunity and premium that they can get by venturing into the market. "This is also due to the increase in Malaysia's palm oil industry as well as the trend for investment by Western countries in Asia to replace oil. "They are looking for a greener raw material and oil palm is a suitable commodity replacement for oil," he told a press conference on the sidelines of the World Bio Markets Asia 2014 here Tuesday. Last year, BioTech Corp secured RM4.12 billion in total investment, of which 53 per cent was contributed by the industrial biotechnology sector and the remainder by the agriculture and medical sectors. Razwin said progress in the industrial biotechnology sector has been lagging slightly behind the medical and agriculture sectors as … Continue reading

Umbilical cord transplants saving lives

Posted: Published on June 17th, 2014

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Amanda Canale doesn't take time with her daughter and niece for granted. She's just happy to feel good. "I've been in the hospital, and I've been sick my whole life," Amanda said. Amanda was born with a rare blood disorder that required daily shots. "Basically, I have no white blood cells," Amanda said. "I have no immune system at all." At 23, she developed leukemia and was given two weeks to live. She desperately needed a bone marrow transplant, but family members weren't matches. Her doctor suggested an umbilical cord blood transplant. "The cord was a perfect match and it was available, so it was the right solution for her," Edward Agura, MD, Medical Director of Bone Marrow Transplantation, Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas, said. Cord blood contains stem cells that regenerate. Mothers of newborns can save their child's own blood or donate it. More than 30,000 transplants have been performed worldwide. However, because the blood comes from a tiny newborn, there's not much of it. "The cord blood is rare, precious and few, and yet is more potent in its ability to grow," Dr. Agura said. Now, doctors at Baylor are treating patients by combining … Continue reading
