The Next Aaron Spelling? Showrunner Shonda Rhimes Is ABC's Queen of Prime Time

Posted: Published on June 4th, 2014

The pilot of then-unknown hospital drama Greys Anatomy was nearly complete in early 2005, but some real heavy lifting remained. Shonda Rhimes, a screenwriter who was taking her first stab at creating a television series, needed to put together synopses of the next eight episodes, telling executives at ABC just where the soapy, hospital-based drama intended to go in the near future. James Parriott, a veteran showrunner whod been brought in to help steer the ship, offered to take half the workload. They only had a weekend to finish, he remembers, which wouldve been a tall order even for a seasoned TV writer. Photo: Joe Pugliese/August Images Rhimes politely said thanks but no thanks to her colleague, whose credits include hit cable and broadcast programs like Covert Affairs, Sons of Anarchy, Ugly Betty and Dark Skies. Parriott didnt force the issue with Rhimes, but he says he awaited a frantic Sunday afternoon call asking for a bailout. It wouldve been completely understandable coming from a TV novice under that kind of pressure. While the 11th hour plea never came, Monday morning did, along with rapid recaps of Episodes 2 through 9 for a series that would become a massive prime-time … Continue reading

Anatomy of a Steve King Tweet

Posted: Published on June 4th, 2014

By Matt Fuller Posted at 3:58 p.m. on June 3 Rep. Steve King took to the Twittersphere Tuesday to denounce the prisoner exchange of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl forfive Taliban officials detained at Guantnamo Bay, asserting that the Obama administration and Bergdahl were working for al-Qaida. To understand and appreciate the Iowa Republicans tweet, you have to break down all the subtle complexities, all the puzzle pieces that King rammed together. He begins with a hashtag. And not a common one. #Susan A cursory Twitter search of #Susan shows that Twitter is averaging about two tweets an hour employing this hashtag, mostly as a shoutout to friends who presumably know #Susan. The hashtag #SusanRice is doing much better about 10 tweets an hour but best of all is the trending topic of Susan Rice. Roughly 200 people an hour are tweeting her name. In short, King probably could have refrained from hitting the pound sign and saved himself a precious character in a tweet that used all 140 of them. (He could have used that extra character to write out the word to instead of using the numeral, because, as a general rule, its better to spell out the word when … Continue reading
