Anatomy in games: An evolution of realism

Posted: Published on May 8th, 2014

The following blog post, unless otherwise noted, was written by a member of Gamasutras community. The thoughts and opinions expressed are those of the writer and not Gamasutra or its parent company. Technological advances in hardware and software have allowed video-games producers to create increasingly complex depictions of their characters. With respect to visualdepictions of human anatomy in video-games, we have seen characters evolve from two- dimensional collections of pixels into highly-realistic three-dimensional creations capable of the finest facial expressions. To a biological scientist, this evolution mimics what weobserve in nature; a process of hundreds of thousands of minuscule changes, which result in increasingly more complex and sophisticated organisms. Assuming this trend continues (alongside the necessary technological advances), we will one day see video-games characters that depict the human form perfectly. Were not there yet, so it makes sense to question what lengths video-games producers should go to when striving for anatomical realism in their animations. Are certain forms or shapes more relevant to our human senses of recognition and empathy? Character Recognition Recognition of a character should not be considered problematic, providing that the recogniser is familiar with the character in the first instance. Studies have shown that a … Continue reading

Anatomy of a writer

In his three years as a Michigan Supreme Court judge in the late 50s, John D. Voelker wrote an impressive 100 opinions. One of the most titillating was People v. Hildabridle in 1959, which involved a Battle Creek-area nudist camp. Voelker, who died in 1991, was decidedly offbeat, said his good friend and fellow fly fisherman and attorney, Frederick Baker. Its that eccentricity that makes Voelkers decision so noteworthy, Baker said. Most (of his decisions) have a glimmer of the human being who wrote then within the text. You dont find that anymore. Today the court cranks out monstrosities that are pretentious and scholarly and that want to impose a philosophy. The case may have faded into legal oblivion except that Voelker, writing under his pen name Robert Traver, had released his novel, Anatomy of a Murder, one year earlier. The book became a New York Times best seller, remaining on the list for 65 weeks 29 of which in the number one slot and spawned the hit Jimmy Stewart movie of the same name. Phil Greasley, a former University of Kentucky English Professor and MSU graduate, will discuss Voelkers decision and its literary merits with MSU English Professor of … Continue reading

Common drug may help treat effects of muscle disease in boys

Posted: Published on May 7th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 7-May-2014 Contact: Rachel Seroka rseroka@aan.com 612-928-6129 American Academy of Neurology MINNEAPOLIS A drug typically prescribed for erectile dysfunction or increased pressure in the arteries may help improve blood flow in the muscles of boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, according to a study published in the May 7, 2014, online issue of Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology. Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a progressive and fatal muscle disease affecting boys and young men that causes loss of muscle function. There is no specific treatment for the disease, which is genetic. Corticosteroids can slow muscle degeneration and help temper the effect on lung and heart function, but they have many side effects and more than a quarter of people with the disease cannot tolerate the drugs. In Duchenne muscular dystrophy, the body has low or none of the protein called dystrophin, which helps maintain healthy muscles. Muscles are deprived of the chemical nitric oxide, which signals blood vessels to relax during exercise, increasing blood flow. The drug tadalafil, which works downstream of nitric oxide, acts to dilate the blood vessels. For the study, 10 boys age 8 to 13 with Duchenne muscular dystrophy who were … Continue reading

Erectile drug may help boys with muscular dystrophy

Posted: Published on May 7th, 2014

Cialis, normally used to treat erectile dysfunction in men, may offer promise for boys with a fatal muscle disorder. In a preliminary study published today in the journal Neurology, the drug appears to improve blood flow to the boys' muscles, just as it boosts blood flow to the penis of men with erectile dysfunction. The drug was given to 10 boys over a short period, so the results are far from conclusive. They do indicate that Cialis deserves more research as a treatment for the boys' disease, known as Duchenne muscular dystrophy. "We had really striking results," said Ronald Victor, a cardiologist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, who led the work. Examining the boys' muscle cells after treatment, he said, "it looked like a complete correction of the blood flow abnormality." In Duchenne muscular dystrophy, boys who are apparently normal until age 4-8, suddenly start to go weak. In their 20s or sometimes earlier, their heart or diaphragm ?? both muscles ?? give out, and they die. The genetic glitch that causes the disease robs the body of its ability to produce a muscle protein called dystrophin, which provides structure to muscles and helps send cellular signals. Without … Continue reading
