Major Women's Health Study Paid Big Dividends

By Barbara Bronson Gray HealthDay Reporter Latest Womens Health News MONDAY, May 5, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- A comprehensive look at the decade-old "estrogen study" -- the U.S. government-sponsored trial that turned the tables on assumptions about hormone replacement therapy -- suggests there can be a billion-dollar upside to the millions spent on research. The research, published May 6 in the Annals of Internal Medicine, shows the public has received a high return on its tax-funded investment in the Women's Health Initiative (WHI). "Everything we do in medicine comes with a level of uncertainty," said Dr. Scott Ramsey, the study's lead author and director of the Hutchinson Institute for Cancer Outcomes Research, in Seattle. "The question is whether it's worth the investment in research to be sure we're not making a mistake." The results of his research, he said, showed that, even though the WHI cost $260 million, the net economic return was $37 billion, or $140 for every dollar spent on the trial. "Even if we only focus on medical care costs, the study saved $27 billion, a huge savings and, I think, quite a conservative estimate because we didn't assume all the decline in hormone replacement therapy was … Continue reading

Ability to isolate, grow breast tissue stem cells could speed cancer research

Posted: Published on May 7th, 2014

By carefully controlling the levels of two proteins, researchers at the Salk Institute have discovered how to keep mammary stem cells -- those that can form breast tissue -- alive and functioning in the lab. The new ability to propagate mammary stem cells is allowing them to study both breast development and the formation of breast cancers. "What we've shown is that we can take these cells out of a mouse and study them and regulate them in the laboratory by providing them with a specific factor," says Peter C. Gray, a staff scientist in Salk's Clayton Foundation Laboratories for Peptide Biology, who collaborated on the new work with Benjamin T. Spike, a senior research associate in the laboratory of Salk Professor Geoffrey M. Wahl. The results of the study were published in the April 8th, 2014 issue of the journal Stem Cell Reports. Mammary stem cells can give rise to new breast cells during fetal development, adolescence or lactation and may also play a role in breast cancer, so they represent a highly promising avenue for breast cancer research. But isolating the stem cells and maintaining them in the lab to study has been difficult. "There was a lot … Continue reading

Mesenchymal stem cells in the treatment of spinal cord …

World J Stem Cells. 2014 Apr 26;6(2):120-133. Mesenchymal stem cells in the treatment of spinal cord injuries: A review. Dasari VR, Veeravalli KK, Dinh DH. Author information Abstract With technological advances in basic research, the intricate mechanism of secondary delayed spinal cord injury (SCI) continues to unravel at a rapid pace. However, despite our deeper understanding of the molecular changes occurring after initial insult to the spinal cord, the cure for paralysis remains elusive. Current treatment of SCI is limited to early administration of high dose steroids to mitigate the harmful effect of cord edema that occurs after SCI and to reduce the cascade of secondary delayed SCI. Recent evident-based clinical studies have cast doubt on the clinical benefit of steroids in SCI and intense focus on stem cell-based therapy has yielded some encouraging results. An array of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from various sources with novel and promising strategies are being developed to improve function after SCI. In this review, we briefly discuss the pathophysiology of spinal cord injuries and characteristics and the potential sources of MSCs that can be used in the treatment of SCI. We will discuss the progress of MSCs application in research, focusing on the … Continue reading

Bride-to-bes quest to find life-saving donor for her fianc

Posted: Published on May 7th, 2014

Diagnosed with leukaemia earlier this year, the 29-year-old needs a stem cell transplant by July. His three brothers do not have the same tissue type so, like 70 per cent of the people who require such treatment, he is waiting on a stranger. His fiance, Kate Robertson, his fiancee, began a campaign group called Shake4mike calling for more people to sign up to the Anthony Nolan charitys donor register. The goal of the campaign, which invites supporters to post a photo of themselves, shaking their face at cancer, was to bring home just how simple it now is both to register and donate. These processes are so much easier now, said Kate, 31. We want to defuse any concerns people have about donating. Its such a marvellous thing to be able to save someones life Sit down, give blood, four or five hours, then youre on your way. She added: Mikes spirit and optimism since day one have been remarkable. Hes just calm, hes not unrealistic that everythings going to be a walk in the park, and just taking one day at a time. A transplant is the last resort for patients with leukaemia and other cancers of the blood, … Continue reading

Comments(0) A Bristol bride-to-be is in a race against time to find a life-saving stem cell donor for her partner. Kate Robertson, 31, has just 60 days to find a donor for her fiance Mike Brandon, 29, who has leukaemia. She is urging people to join a donor register so Mr Brandon can have the transplant he desperately needs when he finishes his course of chemotherapy in early July. Ms Robertson told the Mail Online: Our friends and family in London and Bristol have rallied around, asking what they can do to help, and at least 20 of them joined the Anthony Nolan donor register straight away. "Any one of them could be a match for someone like Mike who needs a donor. "It's so easy and straightforward to sign up. We started thinking that if we channel our energies into getting our friends, and friends of friends, and even strangers, to join the register, we could make a big difference." In March this year, Mr Brandon, who also lives in Bristol, started to suffer from fatigue and night sweats. He visited a doctor who carried out blood tests and just four hours later he was given the devastating news … Continue reading
