Geron Reports In-Line Q1 Loss – Analyst Blog

Posted: Published on May 6th, 2014

Shares of Geron Corporation ( GERN ) were down 6.09% after the company reported first quarter 2014 results. Geron posted a net loss of 6 cents per share in the first quarter of 2014, in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate but narrower than the year-ago loss of 9 cents. First quarter revenues of $474,000 were below the year-ago revenues of $765,000 and the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1 million. A significant decline in expenses led to the narrower loss. Quarter in Detail Revenues consisted entirely of royalties and license fees. Total operating expenses declined 27.8% to $9.2 million. Research and development expenses declined 34.9% to $5.2 million due to reduced personnel-related costs as well as lower costs resulting from the winding-down of the imetelstat (metastatic breast cancer and advanced non-small cell lung cancer) and GRN1005 (brain metastases) studies. This was partially offset by higher costs related to the manufacturing of imetelstat. Meanwhile, general and administrative expenses declined 15.9% to $4 million mainly due to lower patent costs and transaction expenses associated with the Oct 2013 closing of the stem cell divestiture. R&D expenses will remain consistent through the rest of the year unless the full clinical hold on imetelstat … Continue reading

Valley Foot Surgeons Now Offering Stem Cell Procedures for Achilles Tendonitis and Tears for Pain Relief and Helping …

Posted: Published on May 6th, 2014

Scottsdale, Arizona (PRWEB) May 05, 2014 Top Phoenix and Scottsdale foot and ankle doctors at Valley Foot Surgeons are now offering stem cell procedures for the nonoperative treatment of Achilles tendonitis and tears. The regenerative medicine procedures are typically able to provide exceptional pain relief while allowing patients the ability to avoid surgery. Call (480) 420-3499 for more information and scheduling about the foot and ankle stem cell procedures. To date, the lead foot and ankle doctor at Valley Foot Surgeons, Dr. Richard Jacoby, has performed close to 100 regenerative medicine procedures. Typically, these are administered for a variety of conditions such as diabetic ulcers, foot and ankle arthritis, plantar fasciitis, and Achilles injuries. Conditions with the Achilles tendon may include pain due to chronic tendonitis or tears from degeneration. This may occur during a sporting activity, traumatic event, or simply as part of an individual's tendon weakening after taking quinolone antibiotics. The stem cell procedures are performed as an outpatient, with the injections consisting of amniotic derived stem cells. The material is harvested from consenting donors after scheduled c-section procedures, with no fetal tissue at all being used. The material is exceptionally rich in stem cells, growth factors, hyaluronic … Continue reading

Stem Cells Could Be the Answer for Treating Fecal Incontinence After Injury or Disease

Posted: Published on May 5th, 2014

Durham, NC (PRWEB) May 05, 2014 A new study released today in STEM CELLS Translational Medicine demonstrates the regenerative effects of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) on the anal sphincter. The work could have implications for the 11 percent of the population suffering fecal incontinence due to an injury or disease. Massarat Zutshi, M.D., and Levilester Salcedo, M.D., led the research team made up of their colleagues at the Cleveland Clinic (Cleveland, Ohio) as well as those from Summa Cardiovascular Institute and Northeast Ohio Medical University (Akron, Ohio). None of the current therapies for treating fecal incontinence are efficacious in the long-term or without complications related to the surgery or the device, Dr. Zutshi said. However, she added, adipose tissue, muscle and mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) have been shown to improve functioning of the heart and the urinary sphincter in animal models, leading researchers to test their effects in regenerating the anal sphincter, too. In this most recent study the Zutshi/Salcedo team wanted to see how a single intramuscular (IM) injection of MSCs compared to a series of intravenous (IV) treatments. They used rats that had undergone an excision of 25 percent of their anal sphincter complex. Twenty-four hours after injury, … Continue reading

Karyotypesare pictures of homologous chromosomes lined up together during Metaphase I of meiosis. The chromosome micrographs are then arranged by size and pasted onto a sheet. Click here for a larger picture. This picture is from The Primate Cytogenetics Network at ( http://www.selu.com/~bio/cyto/karyotypes/Hominidae/Hominidae.html). A common abnormality is caused by nondisjunction, the failure of replicated chromosomes to segregate during Anaphase II. A gamete lacking a chromosome cannot produce a viable embryo. Occasionally a gamete with n+1 chromosomes can produce a viable embryo. In humans, nondisjunction is most often associated with the 21st chromosome, producing a disease known as Down's syndrome (also referred to as trisomy21). Sufferers of Down's syndrome suffer mild to severe mental retardation, short stocky body type, large tongue leading to speech difficulties, and (in those who survive into middle-age), a propensity to develop Alzheimer's Disease. Ninety-five percent of Down's cases result from nondisjunction of chromosome 21. Occasional cases result from a … Continue reading

Gene Therapy Used to Preserve Sight in Patients

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise Orlando, Fla. In two separate studies, vision scientists have developed healthy genes to prevent blinding diseases that stem from genetic defects. The research is being presented at the 2014 Annual Meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) this week in Orlando, Fla. In a clinical trial to treat choroideremia, a rare disease that causes progressive and irreversible blindness, scientists developed a virus that can replace the missing gene (that causes the disease) in the cells at the back of the eye. Six months after the virus was injected into patients, findings showed that some patients experienced improved vision. Abstract Title: Improved visual function in patients with choroideremia undergoing subretinal gene therapy Presentation Start/End Time: Sunday, May 4, 3:15 3:30pm Location: S 320AB Session Number: 147 In a separate study, researchers developed a gene therapy to stop the progression of a form of retinitis pigmentosa, an inherited disease transmitted from mothers to sons. Two years after the therapy was used to treat dogs at an early stage of the disease, the treatment remained effective. Further use of the technique in dogs with mid and late stages of the disease … Continue reading

Regeneron, Avalanche To Develop Novel Gene Therapy Products In Ophthalmology

Posted: Published on May 5th, 2014

By RTT News, May 05, 2014, 08:34:00 AM EDT (RTTNews.com) - Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. ( REGN ) and Avalanche Biotechnologies, Inc. formed a broad collaboration to discover, develop and commercialize novel gene therapy products to treat ophthalmologic diseases. The collaboration includes novel gene therapy vectors and proprietary molecules, discovered jointly by Avalanche and Regeneron, and developed using the Avalanche Ocular BioFactory, an adeno-associated virus (AAV)-based, proprietary, next-generation platform for the discovery and development of gene therapy vectors for ophthalmology. As part of the agreement, Avalanche would receive an upfront cash payment, contingent payments of up to $640 million upon achievement of certain development and regulatory milestones, plus a royalty on worldwide net sales of collaboration products. The collaboration comprises up to eight distinct therapeutic targets, and Regeneron will have exclusive worldwide rights for each product it moves forward in clinical development. Further, Avalanche has the option to share in development costs and profits for products directed toward two collaboration therapeutic targets selected by Avalanche. Pursuant to the agreement, Regeneron has a time-limited right of first negotiation for certain rights to AVA-101, Avalanche's gene therapy product targeting vascular endothelial growth factor currently under development for the treatment of wet age-related macular … Continue reading
