Sara Ramirez, Chandra Wilson, Justin Chambers, James Pickens Jr. Justin Chambers, Chandra Wilson, James Pickens Jr. and Sara Ramirez have signed new two-year deals for Grey's Anatomy, TVGuide.com has learned. Gallery: The cast of Grey's Anatomy says farewell to Sandra Oh The quartet joins Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey, who also extended their contracts through Season 12 back in January. Current series regulars Tessa Ferrer and Gaius Charles will also exit at the end of the season. As for those sticking around, it's unclear whether Caterina Scorsone, who's currently reprising her Private Practice role as Dr. Amelia Shepherd, will be promoted to series regular in Season 11, though Thursday's episode opened the door to that possibility. OK Woman Shaves Head To Prepare For MS Treatment

Posted: Published on May 4th, 2014

OKLAHOMA CITY - A former Edmond school teacher battling Multiple Sclerosis (MS) decided to shave off all her hair Saturday as she prepares for a stem cell transplant soon. Pamela Gooch says she's always been known for her long and curly brown hair. That was until today when she made the major move to cut it all off to raise awareness for the debilitating disease she's fighting. "It's kind of been a security for me and at this point in my life...I don't think I need it anymore," said Gooch. At 41-years old, Gooch is having all her hair braided in small sections. "I tie it up here so the hair stays in one place and doesn't go everywhere." As she was getting her locks ready to be chopped off she took a deep breath and closed her eyes; No countdown. No nothing. With each snip, the cut is started to settle in. "I look a little different," Gooch said with a laugh. It was a big change, just like the day she was diagnosed with MS. She has two sons, but says she's oftentimes weak and exhausted and had to quit her job as a Pre-K teacher. In order … Continue reading

Autism Research Efforts Skyrocket

Posted: Published on May 4th, 2014

With some $1.5 billion in investment, a new federal report finds that the number of autism research studies has doubled. More than 11,000 studies on autism have been published since 2009, twice the number issued in the preceding five years, the report released this week by the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee found. Findings from the research are shedding light on everything from the best treatment approaches to the biology behind autism, the IACC indicated. The state of the science has dramatically changed in the ASD field over the last five years, said Thomas Insel, director of the National Institute of Mental Health and chair of the IACC, a federal advisory committee comprised of government officials and members of the autism community. The report issued this week serves as an update to the IACCs strategic plan, which is intended to outline priorities for federal research on the developmental disorder. Despite the increase in studies looking at autism, the IACC indicated that much work remains, particularly as it relates to understanding the needs of adults, those on the more severe end of the spectrum, individuals with co-occurring conditions and people in traditionally underserved communities. An investigation last year by the U.S. Government … Continue reading

MP Catherine McKinnell backs the MS Societys Treat Me Right campaign

Posted: Published on May 4th, 2014

The MP for Newcastle North has signed up to the MS Society's campaign Catherine McKinnell, MP for Newcastle North, is backing the MS Societys Treat Me Right campaign, which is calling for fair and equal access to the right treatment at the right time for people with multiple sclerosis (MS). The MP, who is a member and former Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on MS, was honoured this week to be invited to be the president of the Newcastle and Gateshead branch of the MS Society. She signed up to the MS Societys campaign at an event in Parliament to mark MS Week, taking place this month. As part of the campaign, the MS Society is warning that thousands of people with MS could be left behind as new NHS medicines emerge that are out of reach for many with the condition. The charity estimates a quarter of all people with MS in the UK around 27,000 people might begin taking a licensed disease modifying drug (DMD) if care was consistent and all people with MS had access to appropriate information and support to make decisions about their care. There are now nine MS drugs approved for use on … Continue reading
