Epigenetics Helps Explain Early Humans’ Appearances

Posted: Published on April 18th, 2014

Neanderthal skulls. Image by leted via Flickr Scientists have increasingly realized that DNA is only part of what makes us us perhaps equally important is how our genes activity is modified by a process called epigenetics. Recently this cutting-edge field has turned its attention to some very old DNA: Researchers today announced they have reconstructed methylation maps for our extinct relatives. The findings might explain certain differences in appearances between Neanderthals, Denisovans, and us, as well as the prevalence of disease. Epigenetics is a branch of science that explores how the expression of our DNA can be influenced by external factors without the DNA itself changing. Research in the field has focused on DNA methylation. This is when a chemical compound called a methyl group attaches to DNA. This can regulate an individuals genetic expression and even be passed down through generations. DNA methylation has been linked to disease and also to an individuals appearance and behavior. This is the first time, however, that an archaic pattern of methylation has been reconstructed for early humans. Researchers set out to reconstruct the DNA methylation activity of Neanderthals and Denisovans, two species of archaic human that split from modern humans more than … Continue reading

Doctor Will Pay $1M for False Claims

Posted: Published on April 18th, 2014

By FRED CONNORS - Senior Staff Writer , The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register Dr. Devender Batra and Belmont Cardiology Inc. of St. Clairsville will pay a $1 million penalty for violations involving fraudulent Medicare claims. U.S. Attorney William J. Ihlenfeld II said Batra and Belmont Cardiology will pay the fine after causing East Ohio Regional Hospital and Ohio Valley Medical Center to submit fraudulent claims to Medicare from January 2009 to August of 2010, in violation of the Federal False Claims Act. The settlement ends an investigation into improper compensation arrangements between Batra, East Ohio Regional Hospital and Ohio Valley Medical Center. The arrangements with Batra and Belmont Cardiology led the hospitals to submit false claims for prohibited referrals for various health services in violation of Federal law. "These types of prohibited referrals are a significant problem and led to increased health care costs for everyone," Ihlenfeld said. "Medicare expects that a physician's referral of a patient to a hospital will be free from improper influences, and when it's not we will act to hold the wrongdoers accountable." The investigation arose after the U.S. Attorney's Office resolved claims against East Ohio Regional Hospital and Ohio Valley Medical Center for entering … Continue reading

Greys Anatomy: April & Jackson Need To Make Their Marriage Work

Posted: Published on April 18th, 2014

April Kepner and Jackson Avery made us wait forever before finally getting together on Greys Anatomy, so why are theyheaded for splitsville already? Well, too bad April and Jackson now that you are finally together, you need to make it work! On the April 17 episode of Greys Anatomy, April and Jacksons differences finally came to a head, leaving the couples future in limbo. Okay, I can not believe that we are already facing another April (Sarah Drew) and Jackson (Jesse Williams) split. Even though there have been constant red flags since they eloped, I really thought they would be one of the few to live happily ever after. But then, on the April 17 episode of Greys Anatomy, I was reminded that there are no happily ever afters at Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital, formerly known as Seattle Grace. When April confronted Jackson about his constant dismissal of her religious and personal beliefs, things finally hit a boiling point. Jacksons confession that he does not believe in God was shocking all around, but even more so for April, who has shaped her life around her faith in God. However, her reaction was even more shocking. Whenshe welled up in tears I … Continue reading

Grey's Anatomy Recap: "Go It Alone"

Posted: Published on April 18th, 2014

After 10 seasons of hard work, it seemed like Cristina Yang was poised to get the recognition that the brilliant doctor so rightly deserved. Alas, during Thursday's episode of Grey's Anatomy, Cristina fell short of winning the Harper Avery, but she at least saw that she has the support of her person Meredith and her ex-whatever Owen. As Cristina prepares to head to Boston for the awards, Owen offers to attend with her, but she decides she wants to go it alone. Meredith is also supposed to help write her speech, but gets stuck at the hospital, so Cris decides to wing it instead. Later, once she finally arrives at the ceremony, Cristina realizes she made a mistake not letting Meredith and Owen tag along. Fortunately, they secretly came to support her! Unfortunately, Cristina doesn't win. Back at the hospital, Derek is getting overwhelmed by his work with the White House. Because he's been neglecting the interns, he invites them to pull an all-nighter and watch one of his procedures all except for Ben, who falls asleep. During the surgery, Leah messes up pretty massively, though the patient survives. Elsewhere, Alex has been moonlighting at the private practice job while … Continue reading
