FDA Gives Go-Ahead for Phase 2a Trial of CardioCell CHF …

Posted: Published on April 7th, 2014

CardioCell LLC has just received the FDAs investigational new drug (IND) approval for a United States-based, Phase 2a clinical study using its allogeneic stem-cell therapy to treat subjects with chronic heart failure (CHF), which generates more than one million hospitalizations annually. Preparation is underway to initiate the study, A Phase 2a, Single-Blind, Placebo-Controlled, Crossover, Multi-Center, Randomized Study to Assess the Safety, Tolerability and Preliminary Efficacy of a Single Intravenous Dose of Ischemia-Tolerant Allogeneic Mesenchymal Bone Marrow Cells to Subjects With Heart Failure of Non-Ischemic Etiology, at Emory University, Northwestern University and the University of Pennsylvania in May 2014. With the FDAs IND approval, CardioCell is pleased to proceed with a Phase 2a CHF clinical trial based on the safety data reported in previous clinical trials using our unique, hypoxically grown stem cells, said Dr. Sergey Sikora, CardioCells president and CEO. At the studys conclusion we will understand if our therapy produces signs of improvement in a population of patients with dilated CHF, a condition largely unaddressed by current therapies. Dilated CHF is characterized by a viable but non-functioning myocardium in which cardiomyocytes are alive but are not contracting as they should. We hope that unique properties of our itMSCs will … Continue reading

Royal Engineer's bungee jump to boost Enzo stem cell appeal 12:50pm Sunday 6th April 2014 in News A SOLDIER has undertaken a bungee jump off Middlesbroughs Transporter Bridge to raise funds for stem cell treatment for a toddler who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy after being starved of oxygen during labour. Ripon-based Royal Engineer Stephen Maher said he wanted to boost the 60,000 appeal to enable 18-month-old Enzo Thompson to develop basic physical skills. The 27-year-old said he hoped the 160ft leap would also raise awareness of the fundraising campaign for the toddler from Hampshire. Enzos mother, Caroline, said the damage caused to Enzo's brain meant he is unable to process the signals that his brain is sending to his body. She said: Stem cell treatment is a way of repairing and replacing these damaged cells. In the long run we hope that the treatment will offer our son a better quality of life and the chance to be free and independent. Missouri lawmakers mull cannabis extract as epilepsy treatment

Posted: Published on April 6th, 2014

Sunday, April 6, 2014 | 9:14 p.m. CDT JEFFERSON CITY Although Missouri lawmakers are not clamoring to legalize marijuana, key Republican lawmakers appear ready to follow a few states in allowing use of a cannabis extract for people whose epilepsy isn't relieved by other treatments. Legislation is advancing in the Missouri House, where a committee could hold a public hearing and vote this week. Recently filed legislation is backed by the Republican House speaker, majority leader and Democratic leaders. It also is supported by a Republican senator whose son has epilepsy. Sponsoring Rep. Caleb Jones said lawmakers are moving quickly. "People realize that people's lives are at stake," said Jones, R-Columbia. About a dozen states have considered legislation seeking to allow use of cannabidiol oil for patients who have seizures. Cannabidiol, also called CBD, is a compound in cannabis but doesn't cause users to feel high. During the past week, the South Carolina House approved a bill and Wisconsin lawmakers sent a measure to Gov. Scott Walker. Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley signed legislation allowing the University of Alabama at Birmingham to study the marijuana extract while giving participants legal protection from state criminal charges. There has been particular attention on … Continue reading

SFU, brewery join forces in search for answers about autism

Posted: Published on April 6th, 2014

Simon Fraser University wants to put its hyperbaric chamber to work in studying a possible treatment for autism. As the only hyperbaric chamber in Canada at a research centre, its a chance to examine a treatment that has anecdotal backing from parents, but no unbiased proof that it works, said Dr. Peter Ruben, associate dean of research in SFUs faculty of science, in a telephone interview Friday. Air pressure can be increased or decreased inside hyperbaric chambers, which are well-known for treating decompression sickness or the bends in scuba divers. Hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBOT) administers pure oxygen at higher-than-normal pressure and is known to be effective in treating some wounds professional athletes use it to heal more quickly and carbon monoxide poisoning. The proposed experiments at SFU would use HBOT on children and adults with autism because there is some evidence that it increases blood circulation to the brain. Autism is a range of behavioural and learning problems that affects about one in every 150 children. Darryll Frost, president and founder of Surreys Central City Brewers and Distillers, believes that hyperbaric treatments have helped his four-year-old speak in sentences for the first time. Thats why he is leading fundraising efforts … Continue reading

Posted: Published on April 6th, 2014

Eight-year-old Scarlett Hewitt has battled health problems since birth but hopes to fly to America for pioneering treatment. A little girl's dream of playing with her friends in the school playground could become reality after being selected for life-changing surgery. Scarlett Hewitt, eight, was born with cerebral palsy triggered by a heart defect and is unable to walk unaided. But an operation to help reduce the spasticity in her legs is not available on the NHS and Scarlett needs 65,000 to undergo the procedure in the US. Her family have now launched a fundraising campaign to raise money for the complex selective dorsal rhizotomy operation and physiotherapy at St Louis Children's Hospital in Missouri. Scarlett, from Croydon, south London, said meeting the target would bring her one step closer to her dream of being able to run around with her friends and younger sisters Sienna, seven, and Saffron, three. She said: "I dream that one day I will not have to use my walking frame or wheelchair anymore and that I will be able to play in the playground with my school friends and run around just like them. "Sometimes it makes me so sad to sit watching them. It … Continue reading
