United Patients Group to Dr. Sanjay Gupta, California Has Been a Refuge for Cannabis Patients for Nearly Two Decades

Posted: Published on March 13th, 2014

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) March 13, 2014 Tuesday night, CNN aired a special from Dr. Sanjay Gupta called Weed 2: Cannabis Madness. The program tells the story of a family who moved from New Jersey to Colorado to treat their two-year-old daughters chronic epileptic seizures with Charlottes Web, a much sought after high CBD cannabis strain. The Stanley brothers, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, have become specialists in this treatment. United Patients Group, a trusted resource for medical cannabis information, was excited to see the tireless work of the Stanley brothers receive the attention they deserve. Thank you to Dr. Gupta for exploring this topic in an objective, informative way. The documentary had a limited focus, and United Patients Group wants to remind viewers that cannabis has a much wider medical use than treating seizures; it has actually been shown to kill cancer cells. And while the documentary focused on Colorado, other states with legal access to medical cannabis have also become destinations for seriously ill patients, young and old, and their families. California, the first state to legalize medical cannabis, has welcomed patients since 1996. We are thrilled about CNN and Dr. Guptas hard work to cover/uncover the truth about … Continue reading

Strole Patients Lose Month for Each 15-Minute Delay

Posted: Published on March 13th, 2014

Stroke patients are robbed of a month of disability-free life for every 15-minute delay in treatment to restore blood flow to the brain, a study found. The clot-busting therapy tissue plasminogen activator, or tPA, should be given within 4 and a half hours of the onset of stroke symptoms, according to the American Stroke Association. Speeding treatment by just 1 minute means another 1.8 days of healthy life, according to research published today in the journal Stroke by doctors in Australia, Finland and the U.S. The main delay in stroke is due to people not calling for help, said lead author Atte Meretoja, an associate professor of medicine at the University of Melbourne and a neurologist at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. We have now demonstrated that this is very harmful, and people lose on average a month of life for every 15 minutes they wait at home hoping that the symptoms will go away. By quantifying the importance of speed, the researchers aim to inspire medical services to improve response time. The worlds fastest stroke services in Helsinki and Melbourne take an average 20 minutes from the patients arrival at the hospital to start treatment, Meretoja said. No two strokes are alike

Posted: Published on March 13th, 2014

Lisa O'Neill Hill had a stroke at 22 and didn't recognize the symptoms when she had a second stroke in January. STORY HIGHLIGHTS (CNN) -- The first time I had a stroke, I was 22, too young and naive to know what was happening. The second time I had one, about two months ago, I didn't recognize the symptoms and resisted my husband when he suggested that we go straight to the emergency room. In the United States, someone has a stroke about every 40 seconds. And about a quarter of those people have had a stroke before. Having a stroke increases the risk of another, and recurrent strokes have a higher death and disability rate because parts of the brain injured by the first stroke may not be as resilient, according to the National Stroke Association. On January 3, just after I'd finished dinner at home with my family, my second stroke hit. I thought I knew a lot about stroke, but I had no idea that my sudden loss of vision meant I was going down that road again. "One of the tricky things about stroke is that no two strokes are alike," said Jim Baranski, chief executive … Continue reading

Stroke survivors may lose month of healthy life for 15-minute delay in treatment

Posted: Published on March 13th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 13-Mar-2014 Contact: Bridgette McNeill Bridgette.McNeill@heart.org 214-706-1135 American Heart Association Every 15-minute delay in delivering a clot-busting drug after stroke robs survivors of about a month of disability-free life, according to a new study in the American Heart Association journal Stroke. On the other hand, speeding treatment by just one minute means another 1.8 days of healthy life, researchers said. "'Save a minute; save a day' is the message from our study, which examined how even small reductions in treatment delays might benefit patients measurably in the long run," said Atte Meretoja, M.D., Ph.D., M.Sc., lead author of the study and associate professor of neurology at the University of Melbourne in Australia. The clot-busting drug tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) to treat ischemic stroke, should be given within 4.5 hours of symptom onset. However, the sooner it's given, the better the outcome. "Clot-busting treatment works equally well, irrespective of race, ethnicity or gender," Meretoja said. "Speedy restoration of blood flow to the brain is crucial for brain cell survival everywhere." The world's fastest stroke services in Helsinki, Finland and Melbourne, Australia, take an average 20 minutes from hospital arrival to start of treatment, he said. Barely-elevated blood pressure may raise stroke risk by two-thirds

Posted: Published on March 13th, 2014

If your blood pressure is anything over the normal reading of 120/80 mmHg, a stroke may be in your future -- even if it's not high enough to be considered hypertension. That's what a new study published March 12 in Neurology suggests. Researchers analyzed data collected on 760,000 people, and found people with "prehypertension" were 66 percent more likely to develop a stroke than people with a normal blood pressure reading. Prehypertension is a blood pressure that's higher than 120/80 mmHg, but lower than the high blood pressure (hypertension) threshold of 140/90 mmHg. Twenty percent of all strokes seen in the study were among people with prehypertension. The raised risk remained even after ruling out other factors that could lead to a stroke, including high cholesterol, diabetes and smoking. A closer look found people with blood pressure over 130/85 mmHg (but still less than the "high" 140/90 mmHg) were 95 percent more likely to develop a stroke than people with normal blood pressure, while prehypertensives lower than 130/85 were 44 percent more likely to have a stroke than someone with a normal 120/80 mmHg reading. The study has important takeaways for the public, according to the researchers. Play Video Daily … Continue reading

Climbing a mountain - for the love of brother Jack 9:47am Thursday 13th March 2014 in News Climbing a mountain - for the love of brother Jack THE sister of a boy born with cerebral palsy who died, aged nine, is to climb Mount Snowdon in his memory. Hannah Shears and a group of friends want to raise 1,000 for Colchester General Hospitals childrens ward, where brother Jack received treatment. Jack, of Park Square West, Clacton, was born with quad cerebral palsy. It affected his whole body and left him unable to walk or talk. In the two years before he died in January, Jack suffered a series of complications and was a frequent visitor to the childrens ward. On Saturday, April 26, Hannah will join a group of eight friends to travel to Wales and climb its highest peak for the Colchester Hospitals Charity. Hannah, 20, said: Jacks sunny and cheeky personality, combined with his huge smile and blue eyes, easily won over anyone who came into contact with him. Belvoir hospital, DVBIC partner to launch Brain Injury Awareness Month

Posted: Published on March 13th, 2014

Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, in partnership with the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center, officially launched Brain Injury Awareness Month March 6 during an open house at the Intrepid Pavilion, reaffirming the ongoing commitment of both organizations to providing world-class TBI care to servicemembers. March is Brain Injury Awareness Month, and the open house event highlighted several organizations and their efforts to prevent TBI as well as provide care to those servicemembers who have sustained a brain injury. Since 2000, more than 294,000 servicemembers have sustained a traumatic brain injury, with about 80 percent occurring in the at home environment, according to Col. Sidney Hinds, II, DVBIC national director. These numbers indicate the militarys role in supporting veterans, wounded warriors, and their Families, which becomes increasingly more important as the brain injury research advances. Clearly, we are not going to stop seeing traumatic brain injuries even in times of no war, said Navy Capt. Jennifer Vedral-Baron, Belvoir hospital director. So that means despite any operations tempo, we have a lot of work to do, and that work continues daily. Despite the increase in the numbers of TBI in both the military and the civilian population over the past decade, the … Continue reading
