Silent killer claims thousands of epilepsy patients each year

Posted: Published on March 8th, 2014

The Galisano Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida is opening a new epilepsy monitoring unit to help reduce the risks and raise awareness for Sudden Unexplained Death in Epilepsy. SUDEP is the most common cause of death in epilepsy. However, many families who have loved ones with epilepsy have never even heard of it. 20-year-old Michael Martinez was a young man just starting his life. His mother Sherry Meade said that he was a perfectly healthy child until one day, when he began shaking violently. "I didn't know if he had been dabbling in drugs or anything," Meade said. Sherry immediately scheduled a doctor's appointment. She said doctors saw that he had abnormal brain waves in his brain and that caused him to have seizures. Michael was diagnosed with epilepsy. For a year Sherry took care of Michael when he had seizures. "I said Michael have you ever been scared? and he said "No mom! I never know I have them. You have to tell me about it when it's over," Meade explained. The two had made plans one night to sleep in and run errands the next day. "I hugged his neck and I kissed him and I said I … Continue reading

Blll to help autistic children seek treatment makes it to the house.

Posted: Published on March 8th, 2014

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) - After an emotional hearing at the Utah state capitol a bill that would help parents struggling with kids affected by autism could receive financial help treating their sons and daughters. Currently, the bill is on the way to the house for a final vote and could be decided on next week. Families need help and they need help now, said Andrea Griggs, a mother of a autistic child. Senate Bill 57 would provide insurance coverage for the thousands of autistic children covered under state regulated health plans. Autism affects over 18,000 children in Utah and at least two children born each day will later be diagnosed on the spectrum. "We have so many un-served people out there and there is so many places that people could access from other places too if we only had funding. so this could open up doors, said Dr. TJ Glahn the Director of the Carmen B. Pingree Center for Children with Autism. Thursday parents like Griggs and other advocates of SB 57 took a stand for what they say could save thousands of children who would benefit from treatment. My son made vast improvement through treatment. … Continue reading

Traffic accidents account for 61% of spinal cord injuries

Posted: Published on March 8th, 2014

Traffic accidents are the leading cause of spinal cord injuries (SCI) in Saudi Arabia and a study predicts that medical costs to treat 50,000 cases of undiagnosed patients may reach SR25 billion by 2020. The national study conducted by Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) was submitted at the International Conference for Detecting Spinal Cord Injuries. Sultan bin Abdulaziz Humanitarian City (SAHC) organized the event in Riyadh. The survey, covering various regions, was carried out by specialists for 3,740 cases over the past five years. The study showed that traffic accidents accounted for 61 percent of spinal cord injuries, which contribute to the occurrence of quadriplegia. The other causes of spinal cord injuries were sports-related (0.77 percent) and work-related (1.31 percent). The Central Province topped these injuries by 46 percent, followed by the Western Province (26 percent), Eastern Province (13 percent), Southern Province (8 percent) and Northern Province (7 percent). The study showed that among the injuries caused by traffic accidents, 63 percent of the cases were due to overturning of the vehicle, 26 percent due to collision with cars and 4 percent due to car-camel collisions. The study revealed that only 32 percent of the accident victims used … Continue reading
