Stem cell researchers heralding ‘major scientific discovery’

Posted: Published on January 29th, 2014

January 29, 2014 - 17:55 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Stem cell researchers are heralding a "major scientific discovery", with the potential to start a new age of personalized medicine, BBC News reports. Scientists in Japan showed stem cells can now be made quickly just by dipping blood cells into acid. Stem cells can transform into any tissue and are already being trialled for healing the eye, heart and brain. The latest development, published in the journal Nature, could make the technology cheaper, faster and safer, according to the BBC. The human body is built of cells with a specific role - nerve cells, liver cells, muscle cells - and that role is fixed. However, stem cells can become any other type of cell, and they have become a major field of research in medicine for their potential to regenerate the body. Embryos are one, ethically charged, source of stem cells. Nobel prize winning research also showed that skin cells could be "genetically reprogrammed" to become stem cells (termed induced pluripotent stem cells). Now a study shows that shocking blood cells with acid could also trigger the transformation into stem cells - this time termed STAP (stimulus-triggered acquisition of pluripotency) cells. Dr … Continue reading

Scientists in revolutionary stem cell discovery

Posted: Published on January 29th, 2014

Wednesday 29 January 2014 14.05 A "revolutionary" new approach to creating stem cells in the laboratory could open up a new era of personalised medicine, it is claimed. Scientists have shown it is possible to reprogramme cells into an embryonic-like state simply by altering their environment. It means in principle that cells can have their developmental clock turned back without directly interfering with their genes - something never achieved before. The cells become "pluripotent", having the potential ability to transform themselves into virtually any kind of tissue in the body, from brain to bone. Reprogramming a patient's own cells in this way is seen as the Holy Grail of regenerative medicine. It raisesthe prospect of repairing diseased and damaged organs with new healthy tissue that will not be rejected by the immune system. Current methods of performing the same trick involve genetic manipulation, which carries with it a serious risk of triggering cancer. But the new method described in the journal Nature requires no genetic tweaking. Scientists simply bathed immature white blood cells from mice in an acidic solution for 25 minutes. Autism Speaks study finds advances towards universal early screening

Posted: Published on January 29th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 29-Jan-2014 Contact: Steffanie Marchese steffanie.marchese@autismspeaks.org 646-385-8537 Autism Speaks NEW YORK, N.Y. (January 29, 2014) A new study from researchers at Autism Speaks, the world's leading autism science and advocacy organization, shows improvement towards universal early screening for autism. The report, published online today in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, also found that few approaches to early detection, such as screening during well-child visits, were evaluated to understand their impact on early diagnosis and access to services. The study, which identified and examined 40 previously published studies on programs for early detection of ASD and 35 various approaches, found the need for a multipronged approach in assessing children for autism in order to increase early detection. These findings raise concerns about whether current methods are enough to reduce the average age of autism diagnosis and increase access to high-quality early intervention. Early intervention is crucial for enhancing the development of communication, learning and social skills in children with autism. "The good news is that we found universal screening for autism risk to be feasible and practical," says lead author Amy Daniels, Autism Speaks assistant director for public health research. "We also see … Continue reading

Aspirin still overprescribed for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation

Posted: Published on January 29th, 2014

Aspirin is still overprescribed for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation (AF) despite the potential for dangerous side effects, according to research published today. Professor Gregory Y.H. Lip, lead author of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) study, said: "The perception that aspirin is a safe and effective drug for preventing strokes in AF needs to be dispelled. If anything, you could say that giving aspirin to patients with AF is harmful because it is minimally or not effective at stroke prevention, yet the risk of major bleeding or intracranial haemorrhage is not significantly different to well-managed oral anticoagulation." He added: "All the contemporary guidelines1 say that aspirin should not be used for the prevention of stroke in patients with AF. And yet our study shows that aspirin is still overprescribed in these patients." Stroke prevention is central to the management of patients with AF. As the most common cardiac rhythm disorder, AF occurs in 1.5-2% of the general population in the developed world and people over the age of 40 have a 1 in 4 lifetime risk of developing AF.2 Patients with AF have a five-fold risk of stroke, and when they do have strokes they lead to more death … Continue reading
