You Can Have Too Much Iron In Your Diet

Posted: Published on January 29th, 2014

Many people are aware that low levels of iron in their body can lead to anaemia, with symptoms such as fatigue. But few realise that too much iron can result in a potentially fatal condition. Meat picture from Shutterstock Normally, if we have enough iron in our body, then no further iron is absorbed from the diet, and our iron levels remain relatively constant. But the body also has no way of excreting excess iron. In a condition called hereditary haemochromatosis, the most common cause of iron overload, the mechanism to detect sufficient iron in the body is impaired and people can go on absorbing iron beyond the normal required amount. Untreated, haemochromatosis can result in scarring to the liver (cirrhosis), liver cancer, damage to the heart and diabetes. These problems are the result of excess iron being deposited in the liver, heart and pancreas. Haemochromatosis can also cause non-specific symptoms such as fatigue, loss of libido and arthritis. In some, it results in a shortened lifespan. The most common cause of hereditary haemochromatosis is a mutation received from both parents, in a gene called HFE. Around one in every 200 Australians of European heritage have a double dose of … Continue reading

Are Stem Cells The Cure To Baldness?

Posted: Published on January 29th, 2014

January 28, 2014 Brett Smith for redOrbit.com Your Universe Online While a Chinese cream may not have cured George Costanzas baldness in a classic Seinfeld episode, stem cell research from scientists at the University of Pennsylvania has shown the potential for regenerating hair follicles which could lead to relief for hair-challenged men everywhere. According to a new report published in the journal Nature Communications, the Pennsylvania researchers have developed a groundbreaking method for converting adult cells into epithelial stem cells (EpSCs). Similar previous efforts have failed to generate an adequate number of hair-follicle-generating stem cells. In the study, epithelial stem cells were inserted into immunocompromised mice. The stem cells regenerated the various cell types for human skin and hair follicles, and provided structurally identifiable hair shafts, raising the possibility of hair regeneration in humans. The study team began with human skin cells referred to as dermal fibroblasts. By incorporating three genes, they modified those cells into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), which have the capacity to differentiate into any cell types in the human body. Next, they modified the iPS cells into epithelial stem cells, commonly located at the base of hair follicles. Starting with procedures other research groups had … Continue reading

Researchers turn adult cells back into stem cells

Posted: Published on January 29th, 2014

In a step that has implications for stem cell research, human biology and the treatment of disease, researchers in Japan and at Harvard University have managed to turn adult cells back into flexible stem cells without changing their DNA. The researchers discovered that they could put cells in various challenging circumstances ?? including in acidic solutions and under physical pressure ?? and turn mature blood cells into cells that were capable of turning into virtually any cell in the body. The research, published today in the journal Nature, was in mice. If it can be repeated in people, it has the potential to transform research using stem cells to treat disease, and it may lead to a new understanding of how the body heals from injury, said Charles Vacanti, the Harvard Medical School stem cell and tissue engineering biologist who led the research. Biology textbooks say that once a cell matures to serve a specific role, like, say a red blood cell, it can never go back into a less mature state. Vacanti and his colleagues say their new research upends that dogma. "This study demonstrates that any mature cell when placed in the right environment can go back, become … Continue reading

Scientists discover a new, simpler way to make stem cells

Posted: Published on January 29th, 2014

A team of Boston and Japanese researchers stunned the scientific world Wednesday by revealing a remarkably simple and unexpected way to create stem cells able to give rise to any tissue in the body. To transform mature cells into powerful stem cells that are a biological blank slate, the team simply bathed them in an acid bath for half an hour. The technique appears to be far easier and faster than current methods for creating these cells, which scientists are racing to develop into therapies for a range of diseases. The result is shocking, astounding, revolutionary, and weird, said scientists not accustomed to using such exuberant words to describe new research findings. The finding has been officially reported only in mice, but human studies are underway. Researchers at Brigham and Womens Hospital said that over the weekend they made what appears to be a human version of the stem cells, although further study and confirmation of that preliminary result is needed. Its just a wonderful result; its almost like alchemy, said Douglas Melton, co-director of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, who was not involved in the research published Wednesday in the journal Nature. It says one has found a way … Continue reading

Genetic screening spreads to primary care at Sanford clinics

Anne Roberts of Moorhead Anne Roberts of Moorhead talks about her decision to have her breasts removed after being diagnosed with the gene that made her a high risk for developing breast cancer. David Samson / The Forum Sanford medical lab scientist Tylise Graff looks at tumor tissue from a breast cancer sample which helps determine the course of treatment. David Samson / The Forum Would you consider genetic testing? FARGO Anne Roberts considers herself a breast cancer previvor. After learning that she inherited a gene that placed her at very high risk and knowing her family history was riddled with cancer she opted for preventive surgery, a double mastectomy. My surgeon explained to me it wasnt a matter of if, she said. I was going to get cancer. It was a question of when. Roberts was 55 when she had the surgery four years ago the same age her older sister first developed breast cancer, and the age of her paternal grandmother when she died of cancer. Genetic testing revealed the Moorhead woman had an 87 percent chance of developing breast cancer. Preemptive surgery reduced her risk by 90 percent. Now, the kind of genetic screening and counseling that … Continue reading

Health insurers struggle with whether to pay for genetic tests

Posted: Published on January 29th, 2014

FARGO Medical science has developed genetic tests for 2,000 diseases that are available for clinical use. Some, such as prenatal screens to test for Down syndrome and other congenital disorders, have been in use for years. But in many cases, experts said, limited scientific information is available to evaluate tests, and medical providers and payers are struggling with how to navigate an expanding field of medicine. Health insurers often are the gatekeepers in deciding whether to pay for genetic tests. Early diagnosis and treatment can improve patients outcomes and be more cost-effective, but payers want scientific guidance. Theyre struggling with this too, is my belief, said Dr. Claire Neely, medical director of the Institute for Clinical Systems Improvement, a Minnesota group that advises member health systems and insurers. They want to do the right thing for their patients, she said. Sanford Healths recently announced initiative to bring genetic medicine and counseling into the primary care setting, in combination with research and education, should generate useful information, Neely said. I would call it increasing genetic literacy in primary care, she said. I think that is an important piece. Experts, including those with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, say valid … Continue reading

Drexel cancer symposium seeks to foster cooperation with Israeli researchers

Posted: Published on January 29th, 2014

The seminar, a year in the making, was formally announced in November at a news conference in Jerusalem. In attendance was Mayor Nutter, who used the announcement to cap a two-week trade mission to London and Israel in November. This seminar is an example of the types of ties Nutter was striving to secure on his trip. The mayor was on hand Monday when the seminar got underway at Children's Colket Translational Research Building on Civic Center Boulevard. In welcoming the researchers, Nutter managed to draw a healthy laugh from the crowd when he related his own college-era interest in pursuing medicine as a career. That is, until he collided with one of the denser prerequisites. "Chemistry changed my life," Nutter said. "Ultimately, the world is a better and safer place." Nutter acknowledged knowing little about what was to be discussed at the conference, which was not surprising given how technical and targeted the planned sessions will be. The researchers heard from experts Monday on childhood disorders and diseases, the nervous system, cardiology, metabolism and nanomedicine. The researchers had a wide variety of interests and expertise. Julie Mostov, vice provost for global initiatives at Drexel, said some researchers from her … Continue reading

:: 28, Jan 2014 :: SINGAPORE SCIENTISTS SUCCEED IN MANIPULATING STEM CELLS INTO LIVER AND PANCREAS PRECURSOR CELLS

Posted: Published on January 29th, 2014

28 January 2014-Scientists from the Genome Institute of Singapore (GIS) in A*STAR have developed a novel method of directing human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) into highly pure populations of endoderm[1], a valuable cell type that gives rise to organs including the liver and pancreas. These cells are highly sought-after for therapeutic and biotechnological purposes, but have been historically difficult to attain from hPSCs. The ability to generate pure endoderm at higher yields from hPSCs is a key and important step towards the use of stem cells in clinical applications. The discovery, published in the prestigious scientific journal Cell Stem Cell in January 2014, was led by Dr Bing Lim, Senior Group Leader and Associate Director of Cancer Stem Cell Biology at the GIS, Dr Lay Teng Ang, a postdoctoral fellow from Dr Lims lab, and Kyle Loh, a graduate student at Stanford University School of Medicine. hPSCs are stem cells that can generate over 200 distinct cell types in the human body. They respond to multiple external protein instructions to differentiate into other cell types. Therefore, generating one single cell type from hPSCs, and a pure population of that given cell type, is delicate as hPSCs have a tendency to … Continue reading
