Jerry Brown to the California Institute for Regenerative Medicines independent citizens oversight committee, Biocom announced. This is an opportunity to work alongside patient advocates, researchers and leaders in the biotechnology space to guide the development of experimental medical treatments through regulatory bodies and ultimately to the patient, said Joe Panetta, who will remain president and CEO for Biocom, a life sciences trade group. The Institute for Regenerative Medicine was established in 2004 with the passage of Prop 71, the California Stem Cell Research and Cures Act. The statewide ballot measure, which provided $3 billion in funding for stem cell research at California universities and research institutions, was approved by voters and called for establishing an entity to make grants and provide loans for stem cell research and research facilities. T-Cell Finding Sheds Light on Why HIV Can Persist Despite Treatment

Posted: Published on January 14th, 2014

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise Ryan Zurakowski, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Delaware, is co-author of a paper appearing in Nature Medicine on Jan. 12 highlighting the role of T-cells in HIV. The paper, titled HIV-1 Persistence in CD4+ T-Cells with Stem Cell-Like Properties, provides evidence that a particular T-cell type may help researchers better understand why HIV can persist despite treatment. Zurakowskis co-authors include Mathias Lichterfeld, the papers lead author, and researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH); Ragon Institute of MGH, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University; the First Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University; Brigham and Womens Hospital; and Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Zurakowski explained that HIV treatments do not kill infected cells. Instead, they stop the infection of new cells, and rely on the virus itself to kill the infected cells. Unfortunately, some cells infected by the virus memory T-cells are not killed by the virus. T-cells are a type of lymphocyte, or white blood cell, produced by the thymus gland, that actively participates in the bodys immune response. Memory T-cells can live for years, or even decades, providing life-long immunity to previously encountered diseases. They … Continue reading

Aesthetic Center for Plastic Surgery Shares Results of Recent Study

Posted: Published on January 14th, 2014

Houston, TX (PRWEB) January 13, 2014 Genetics may be only part of the reason for the look of aging on a persons face; stress, divorce and antidepressants can also age a person significantly, according to a recent study. This study, published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, confirmed the beliefs of Dr. Rolando Morales of the Aesthetic Center for Plastic Surgery. The study highlights something that Dr. Morales has explained to his patients for years: not all of the factors that age ones face are obvious or simple. For example, twins who have lived different life experiences have different perceived ages. Factors such as divorce, anti-depressants and weight can have an effect on a persons perceived age. Most of us instinctively know about things like smoking and the effect it can have on aging, but other less obvious factors, such as the stress of divorce and the use of anti-depressants, can also change a persons apparent age, said Dr. Morales. At my office, I see people every day that have experienced life and, unfortunately, it shows on their faces. Through the use of cutting edge techniques, Dr. Morales is able to erase … Continue reading
